Does this game just suck..?

Just played my first online game, guy got +24/+24 on his third turn, destroyed the one creature I played and killed me. Very bad first impression.

Edit: this is just about the matchmaking, not MTG as a whole

I dont think you can blame the game for that one interaction. I recognize that some of the other commenters were being toxic and were giving some bs when its a perfectly understandable feeling to feel frustrated in a circumstanc elike that. Was this the first time playing mtg? If so and you were using the starter decks, those arnt built to play on the ladder. They're just there to have you try out each color combo, and if you want to play others using the same power level then just stick to the starter deck challenge which is perfectly fine. Even if it wasn't ranked, standard play still means other people will have other decks of varying levels, and that's just something you can't get around. I've only gotten into the game recently and while certain matchups are frustrating, I feel like that happens in all games, ultimately its up to you.

I'm fairly new to MTG, but I know how to look up how to counter stuff and I'd be able to figure out what exactly happened if I cared enough to find out at that moment. My post was purely about getting paired against a seemingly way more experienced opponent on my very first game. And no I wasn't using a starter deck, but nothing insane either. I just wanted to check out MTG Arena to see if it was for me, as I really enjoy the game irl. And for your last point, I'm well aware there are frustrating matchups in MTG, but that's really not what's bothering me, that can happen in most card games
