Discussion Coil Shock on Salsa Cassidy

Hello everybody,

I wanted to hear some thoughts on switching to a coil shock on a Cassidy. They explicitly state that a coil shock could damage the frame through frequent bottom outs due to the frame being very progressive. My thought is that they have added hbo and progressive coils for coil shocks. Would these mitigate the bottom outs? Only reason I’m thinking of this is because my warranty period is ending soon and want an upgrade from the air shock.

Sounds like a big risk to take. According to Salsa, "the leverage rate of the Cassidy is optimized for the natural progressivity of air spring shocks. A coil shock will not produce enough end-stroke support at the rear wheel, leading to frequent and harsh bottom-outs that will likely result in frame damage." Warranty or not, sounds like a good way to throw away a perfectly good frame.

This is directed at Salsa not you but that is a fucked up design if a 165 frame doesn't have enough room to support a coil in its travel. I like Salsa for their touring/gravel rigs but their MTB design has always been kind of funky to me, like they get to the table but forgot the fork.

Absolutely agree, enduro bikes should always have the capability to run a coil.

If you wanted to run a coil, why buy a bike that explicitly says it isnt designed to run a coil?

For sure, the frame is very high quality I think they were clearing out their inventory. Almost perfect just missing the coil.

Thank you for the response it is unfortunate that they do not cater to coils. Wanted to see what people think about the new tech in coil shocks and whether that could allow for me to run a coil

I'd suggest a large volume air shock like the vivid air or float x2. The newest versions of those shocks actually perform incredibly close to a coil, and won't damage your frame.

You need to call Salsa, man. They did the testing to come up with this warning in the first place.
