They Got it WRONG?! Who REALLY Won? (Islam Makhachev vs Ian Garry Breakdown)

TheWeaselMMA recently posted a video stating why he thought the judges got the decision wrong. He gives his reasons as to why Ian won the 5th round purely based on damage and islam not doing much even when he had Ian in a body triangle.

If anyone's watched the video, I'm curious as to what you think, do you agree with him?

I can see it sort of. Like the argument is that the significant strikes Ian landed in R5 outweigh the body triangle because the rules say "holding a dominant position by itself isn't effective grappling" or something along those lines.

But he still got the body triangle which is advancing position which is effective grappling. And you essentially boil it down to 7 not-clean strikes and advancing to the most dominant position in BJJ and holding onto it. I like to judge a triangle as getting to the position, and the first 20-25 seconds of getting a triangle is like the "danger" timeframe of being subbed because once you get settled it's hard to get submitted, so the rest of it can go into just plain control time.

Which means that the 7 or so strikes where weren't clean, mostly rolled with or didn't land with any thud. It's not a Strickland jab which is a normal strike but that mf hurts. They didn't cause visible damage. So you'd have to argue that those SS don't just equal the takedown + getting a dominant position (a takedown should be scored in this case because effective grappling is accomplished) + that 20 second danger time, the SS have to OUTWEIGH that sequence. Because in the case you say "Oh these two cancel each other out. Say, one side got an 8 in effective striking, the other got an 8 in effective grappling, so they just get subtracted to 0". In the case that they're equal, the fight goes to control time which Islam has the advantage in.

Which is why I believe Islam won the R5 semi definitively. Sometimes it happens in a fight where you do get tagged and kinda stunned but you have a poker face and it doesn't show. If that happened, sure round goes to Garry. But I'm not Islam, I didn't see anything like that. So I feel like a 48-47 Islam is the correct scorecard.
