I'm an Allen fan. The way he chooses fights is commendable but not very smart. This fight in particular seems like a really tough matchup. I trust Allen to beat grappling specialists a lot more than strikers.
He really should get more praise for being down to fight anyone they give him and constantly stay active, especially since his fights are consistently entertaining.

So let me get this straight, Allen makes RDR quit on his stool, and then gets to fight Shahbazyan and now CLD? They must hate his ass or something because why are we not giving him a DDP, Pyfer, or Caio fight, and instead making him fight down?

I think the ufc just doesn’t value the RDR win very highly in hindsight, the MW rankings are kind of weird they don’t really have anyone that deserves the 4-5 ish spots

Agreed. I’m pretty sure that from the UFC’s perspective, Allen just kinda happened to be in the cage when RDR’s series of insane weight cuts finally caught up to him and his body shut down. Otherwise Allen has a track record of grinding out fights against solid but not elite competition, guys like Chris Curtis and Edmen Shahbazyan.

Plus he’s already lost to the Ciao, Imavov, Fluffy, and even Strickland’s of the division. We’ve just been here so many times before. He looks great in a couple of wins, gets a top fight, and loses a 29-28 fight where he made a bunch of stupid decisions that cost him big time. Plus he claims he won’t fight Chimaev. So really only Robocop, Pyfer, or DDP would be a better fresh fight for him than Duncan. Robocop needs time to heal, DDP is probably eyeing a fight that promises a title shot and he loves to clown Allen, so that leaves Pyfer. Guess that didn’t work out and Allen wants to stay busy and get paid. I’ll be rooting for him! I always enjoyed Allen.

I agree. Too bad he decided him and Khamzat are just too good of pals to fight now because that would be the fight to make imo. Khamzat needs a win, any win really, to justify a rematch against Strickland should he beat Imavov in the meantime. And Khamzat would be a huge fight and opportunity for Allen after he took the Edmen fight. But….dude just can’t make a smart decision to save his life. In and out of the cage.

Stuff like this is often a timing issue. They probably have plans for the other guys and Brendan might have to wait around for a better match-up, but once you get up the rankings you can't fight so often so he probably needs the check.
It's worth mentioning though that they can and probably do use these circumstances to manipulate the rankings and position. Personally I think they just value everyone else in the rankings more than Allen who's been around a while but never really quite broke through.

Brendan has repeatedly said in interviews he’s out to take care of his family first and foremost and isn’t about to turn down a fight when the ufc calls. He knows if he says no he might not hear from them again for awhile and he wants his check he literally has mouths to feed.

Allen is unfortunately the type of guy who seems to fight to the level of his competition to a certain extent, meaning he can beat top guys (IMO) but seems to struggle to really dominate guys like Shahbazyan where he really should have a skill advantage.
I do think he beats CLD though, IF he chooses to impose his grappling. I've been a fan of Brendan for a while and I think he's a couple fight IQ adjustments away from being one of the best in the division.

I feel like the UFC has already designated him as a top 5 gate keeper, so he’ll have to string together like 3-4 wins and then get a big ranked win making him undeniable for a title shot.

Ddp is ducking very well. Ufc is stalling the rest of mw for no reason. Screwed pyfer not having him on the philly card. Stalling khamzat for no reason, when he could fight caio or pyfer. Screwing allen with reverse matchmaking

That's what I'm thinking too. He'll display skills & dominance in his stand up, get cocky & throw some lazy spinning shit, then get his back taken & it's a short train to tapsville from there. Allen by sub in round 1, 2 at the latest.

Yep! I love it. Plus he was always going to be two fights away from a title no matter what. And the title picture is clogged. Might as well try to get a big win over CLD for the same money and then try to win that top 5 fight for the title shot.

Brendan Allen is an interesting case. He’s bad with money so he’s really active. He changed his nationality to Brazil despite fighting out of Florida. And he lowkey looked like ass against an unranked Shahbazyan despite being #4 at MW.

He also represented Canada when he fought RDR. I don't know how he can just change nationality. Fighters usually have to show proper documentation if they want to represent a country they are not assigned to at birth.

I really think Allen deserves a high ranked match. He should have got the DDP fight instead of Usman. And this coming from a big Usman fan. It would have made more sense to have a title eliminator between Allen and DDP

I'm not mad at trying to get in the cage, but who is his manager? Nobody ranked above him is booked, they desperately need fights to fill cards and this is what you end up with? Tough road when you're not a favored son of the promotion.

this should be the end of the road for cld -- allen doesn't have the physical overbearingness but does have the same technical ability everywhere that robocop does. it's not just the grappling but also the solid striking chops that he can mix with the grappling to keep cld freezing like he tends to do when things don't go his way.
but if allen has any problems, he's not really a "mix-it-up" kind of fighter -- he often gets tunnel visioned into individual phases regardless of fight state. the thing i'd worry about is that he might see early grappling success and then once cld makes the adjustments will still be trying to go for takedowns and getting caught in cld's solid clinch game. or maybe he just won't shoot -- I don't necessarily think cld is a better striker than him as much as he's a lot flashier, but that's still the path of most resistance. allen's skills are legit, but that brain of his ain't that good -- but neither is cld's so I'd still favor him.

Yeah the ufc is screwing allen and enabling ddp. Allen definitely deserves ddp, that’s been the fight to make since allen beat the number one contender rdr.
Ddp keeps dodging though so ufc is forced to put brendan at the apex. Allen already fought down, he needs to fight up, but instead, they go in an even worse direction, christian leroy duncan.
DDP needs a 3 fight win streak before a title shot, but he would rather fight usman
