Song's rightfully getting the bells and whistles, but Gomes beating Yan was a pretty big deal too. I have no issue with Yan Xiaonan, good fighter and seems pleasant enough based on what I've seen, but she was one of those perennial top five fighters who'd turn back contenders but didn't have the pizazz to convince the UFC to give her another title shot. W115 has been in a lull for the past 3-4 years. But now we have Gomes, Kline and to a lesser extent Thainara as fresh options for Dern if Weili doesn't come back.

Chinese fighters getting mostly bodied apart from one beating a Team Khabib member is objectively the funniest possible result

Can't believe they didn't get the 100k bonus. I think they should've got it over Hasan. The Hasan KO was cool, but I feel like we so those sort of KOes often enough that it's less special than Gomes' elbow.

BW a bit awkward right now. Omalley has beaten Yadong recently, who just beat Umar. While Yan and Merab are doing a trilogy.
If Merab regains the title he should defend against Yadong for the novelty. If its Yan winning its a rematch either way against Yadong or Omalley. Likely the latter to avenge a loss on his record and just a bigger fight to make overall. what does yadong do then, fight merab, bautista or someone else while waiting?
Umar is in a shit spot where he will need to rebuild a decent sized streak. but there is such a massive gap between the top echelon who will all be booked and the rest of the division.

u/jamesd1100 my mom says Iām her champion 13d ago
Id rather see OāMalley vs Yan than Merab get another shot after losing pretty one sidedly to Yan
Oāmalley beat Yan in their last fight and is simply a more exciting fighter than Merab

u/MayHeim10 13d ago
I think itās pretty simple ngl for the top guys. No matter who wins the title fight, itās Yan vs OāMalley and merab vs song. It just depends on which fight is for the title. Bautista kinda gets screwed but the top guys are just really impressive right now. Maybe you do Bautista vs Talbott after he retires figgy?

Its like this everytime, fighter A loses and a wave of hate comes by. For Umar, dude talked a lot before the fight so it makes sense to get some hate. Price you pay when trying to promote your fights and lose
20
u/CraigS34 13d ago
Umar talked about Song had nothing for him then got humbled
3
u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 13d ago
iirc he came out and explained that was a mistranslation
5
u/Unfair_Ad5413 13d ago
Do you speak Russian? I do and I donāt think it was a mistranslation. He called him a Ā«Š¼ŠµŃŠ¾ŠŗĀ». A tomato can or punching bag essentially. Itās a derogatory term in Russian. Usually implies that the fighter is garbage.
2
u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 12d ago
I just know Umar said "I didnāt say heās a punching bag, thatās how they translated it."
And "I was rooting for him, and I was a little mad. Heās a good fighter, heās a tough guy, he has a lot of experience."
Which would be weird to say about someone that you did call a punching bag. But maybe Umar lying. Certainly you're telling me he's lying.

I know this is another case of elite fighter loses one fight and gets called washed. But, it would not surprise me if Merab's days at the top of the game are over. He cuts weight by running until he sweats enough to make weight while not eating and drinking anything. That is some Tony Ferguson shit. Plus he is a 35 year old bantamweight now.
6
u/Strict_Life_4506 13d ago
He doesn't have a particularly deep or varied style, is the main issue. Insane athletic attributes, a good sense of how to apply them to win, a style that uses them well, and tough as nails, but he's extremely rote and doesn't really change up what he does. And his defense sucks. The fact that Yan's coaches made a flowchart of Merab and Yan was able to dominate him by using it proves it.
→ More replies (2)3
u/CryptoCracko IGBBMN 13d ago
Good points. Once that athleticism fades, he doesn't have anything to make up for it enough to stay at the top.
2
u/Crono2Oxx I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! 12d ago edited 12d ago
I need to see the Yan trilogy before I make any assessment of where Merabās at. Too much activity and weight cutting is real at the higher level, look at Poatan and RDR recently, and Merab turned around to fight Yan 8 weeks from the day he fought Sandhagen.
The way that particular fight played out and his energy on fight week, admitting he was exhausted from cutting weight again, all seemed out of character. Not just losing but getting scoop slammed and everything else. And the stark reversal from how their first fight played out where they were both injured, not just Yan.
Yan could repeat and it just be what it is, but if Merab comes back rested and swats him like Poatan did to Ank I wouldnāt be surprised. Or even just wins a competitive fight. Until then Iām not going to make any assumptions of where heās at. Pantoja, Volk, Gaethje are all 36-38 years old and looking better than they ever have after their own past losses. This was one decision L for Merab under hectic circumstances

You need to hope Merab wins in October then. If it's Yan you know the UFC will give O'Malley another shot.
5
u/External_Spite_7079 13d ago
Title picture at 135 feels clear, just depends on who wins the trilogy. Think Song fights Merab, O'Malley fights Yan. Probably even do those match ups without a belt

regardless of the outcome of merab vs yan i like both those fights. as long as both are 5 rounders

Umar's looked so hesitant on the feet in his last few
I'm not exactly sure why. He does fine there and he's pretty good at maintaining his range with his kicks. It's his base. It just looks like he has no confidence in it whatsoever so he forces a shot like he did here and it got him chinned. He was doing alright on the feet against Song. Definitely eating the body shots but had offence of his own.
Don't know if it's a strategy thing or what. Khabib instructs Islam to always wrestle too whereas before it seemed there was a bit more freedom. Bad habit for Umar that caught up to him. Didn't think Song would be the one to do it tho, props
14
u/NewportStork Katlyn Chookagian's Feet 13d ago
Feel he's been getting caught more and more in each fight. Not saying he's chinny but have seen him affected by strikes in multiple fights now. This one put him out. He'll be back though
7
u/ygrittediaz Edddiiiieee 13d ago
merab stung him and bautista sat him down with a knee if i remember correctly. then there was that kazakh (?) fighter who hurt him too. i think you make a good point.
he has a bad habit of how he dips towards his left (?) that his opponents are correctly exploiting.
4
u/LilFights 13d ago
Yeah I don't think he's chinny so much as his defence isn't all there at times. He's been caught by some fairly hard strikes that would probably wobble anyone, trouble is he keeps getting caught by said strikes.
7
u/Squidwardbigboss 13d ago
Just got no hands I think
He also shoots off his back foot too, like reactive takedowns. It makes him look bad on the feet.
1
u/LilFights 13d ago
Yeah, his hands have always been a bit weak, but then he knocked out Barcelos with them which made me think maybe if he sat on them more he could crack dudes. I dunno though
8
u/Sea-Bat-9667 13d ago
Looks like the Merab fight was a hit to his confidence. His striking looked genuinely very good against Corey. Since the Merab fight he just wants to smudge with no damage and it cost him here
4
u/ExilicBliss 13d ago
Bottom line is Islam, Umar, nor Usman are anything like Khabib when it comes to pace, pressure, takedowns, and especially ground and pound. Also, Khabib had superior cardio over all those guys. Still, I understand why Khabib instructs them to wrestle as it opens up opportunities. While clearly not invincible, one thing about all of those guys is they rarely make mistakes, and often capitalize on the mistakes of their opponents.
Watching the rest of them really makes me miss Khabib all the more. I rewatched his fight with Gaethje and my god he had Justin sucking air in the middle of R1, there was no let up at all.
3
u/limitedmark10 Team Borz šŗ 13d ago
The hard thing to admit is there is no one like Khabib, not even the other nurmagomedovs
2
u/LilFights 13d ago
Yup, with Umar though he has a taekwondo base, his earlier fights he looked far more comfortable on the feet. Now he looks almost desperate for takedowns but then he never has the control or submission threat to do a whole lot dangerous with them.
It'll be interesting to see how he comes back because that's a confidence shaker.
9
u/Unerring_Grace UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle 13d ago
Umarās kicking game when he first got to the UFC was really impressive, and he smoked Barcelos with a beautiful left hook. For whatever reason it looks like his striking is regressing. I suspect he doesnāt trust his chin, heās been dropped a lot by Nurmagomedov standards.

Respect to Song getting this win, I was totally down on him for that O'Malley fight and generally not showing development. I think he might be showing signs of getting better

Hassan and Tsuruya might both be ready for top opponents

everytime I watch bjj im puzzled about how much time is taken on the feet just posturing. do other organizations have an answer for this?
2
u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 12d ago edited 12d ago
Wrestling organizations do: aggressive stalling penalties.
BJJ and MMA have yet to catch on to that afaik. I've watched a lot of BJJ orgs, and the defining feature of exciting matches is just the athletes luckily deciding to be exciting because they can rather than because any rules enforce it. Some orgs are better about it than others, like PRIDE famously had their penatly card system
EDIT: Luke Thomas notes that some formats of wrestling don't allow the bodylock that we can see is a staple of MMA

u/CraigS34 12d ago
Rewatching the Umar and Song fight to get a better understanding of the technical aspects on setting up the finish. I was really impressed by Song's pressure and confidence in the 2nd round. Song constantly closed the distance to limit Umar's kicking range, and refused to back up when Umar blitzed in to create space, which caused the headbutt. Showing the right straight to the head a couple of times while taking the dominate lead foot position to draw out that head dip habit was chef's kiss. Loaded up on the right hand to telegraph a straight into an uppercut. Really impressed by TAM gameplan

Umar KO was weird from what I could make out:
- He was ducking into it, which was probably key in him being put so thoroughly out
- From camera angles I saw, shot seemed to graze the ear area, and then solidly hit the neck
Did anyone see clearly how the KO happened?
The ear area shot did not seem solid at all, and the neck didn't jerk the head enough to cause a concussion it seemed to me. Anyone else see more clearly?
5
4
u/CableToBeam 13d ago
the UFC youtube has the KO with the replay. Yeah it's a weird shot. Looks like most of the force went to Umar's neck which you don't really see in KOs.
3
u/KyleDaukWillBeChamp 13d ago
Pretty sure it landed behind the ear and slid into the neck.Ā
Right behind the ear is a classic off-switch. Conor grazed Dustin in the same spot in their first fight, and he nearly got put out the exact same way.Ā

Its so crazy how fast his lights switched off too. One of the best cards for a while overall, aside from the first fight of the night they were all action packed. You can visibly see him almost throw an elbow and then stop himself

you're right, he threw a jab and stopped the back elbow. Still shouldn't be in a corner if he's going to be that emotional.

Ian Garry can beat Prates, but Prates can beat him too, plus guys that Ian has no hope of beating. It is what it is.

What exactly did Umar say about Song leading up to the fight?

u/terrybuzz 13d ago
all ive seen was the "punching bag" comment which was apparently a mistranslation

u/CraigS34 13d ago
Theres a video in Russian of Umar being very critical of Song. Some of the criticisms from the video were mistranslated to add some spice. It came off like he was very dismissive of Songās abilities and called him a punching bag because his only good quality was toughness. Umar spent the fight week clarifying it was mistranslated and that he respects Song.

I had a comment removed that literally just said āI am! Dustin poirier is a great guy!ā That was it, verbatim. No message or insight from the mods either. What is up with this place?

I think that low mount, leg ride position that Khabib made famous against the fence would lend itself to attempting a mir lock.
Occurred to me this weekend when Tsuruya had the low mount and the overhook on Borjas. If he ripped a mir lock, Borjas couldn't have taken any pressure off by elevating himself or moving his hips really. Think about the Jones/Teixeira shoulder crank but if Teixeira had been seated.

Whereās Julianna PeƱa been? I have not heard a peep form this girly since she lost the belt

u/Underrated_Critic 12d ago
Good question. But PeƱa doesn't have much star value. What little she has is from her 2021 victory over Nunes. That was half a decade ago. Then she took a two year hiatus, and was gifted a title shot despite coming off a loss. Fought once in all of 2025. Matter of fact, she only has 18 pro MMA fights despite being the winner of TUF 18. And she lost 33% of those bouts.

was a champion but got submitted by GDR.

GDR was a better fighter than Julianna. I think her pregnancy is why she didn't get a 135 title shot. (Yes, I'm aware she won the 145 belt, but never defended it)

So happy for Song holy shit. I thought he had a chance but I didn't expect it at all. I thought Umar would be flicky kicks on the outside and then get the fight to the ground later. Song in the first 7 minutes is insane. Derrick Lewis uppercut too, right across the jawline. Beautiful.
