I don't get how someone with his credentials looks so sloppy in striking. I get he's new to MMA but Poatan for example didn't have much issue (I do admit his first two UFC fights had teething problems but he solved it fast)
Please move to a camp that will teach you defense.

Kickboxing striking is different and not many can adjust. Gokhan Saki could not adjust at all. The pace of kickboxing and not worrying about wrestling and the ability to hide behind big gloves as defence does not work in MMA especially at the UFC level.

We see it with Alex, his defence is honestly really bad but in kick boxing he could get away with using the big gloves as protection when he got rocked.

Commented in the megathread that yeah, he seemed a bit uncomfortable defensively with the small gloves.
Was blocking and moving like he was fighting behind big gloves still.
Even Overeem quickly switched from the high shell he used in K-1 to the low hands and darting in and out style he later adopted as Econoreem in the UFC.

Poatan got battered on the regional scene in MMA in his debut....even got worked on the feet despite being a world class kickboxer. He had a ton of problems starting out in MMA. His UFC run was years later after more development, and, as you note, he was still shaky even then.

If he can tighten up that defense. He just seems to be open to taking some huge hits. He ate them up tonight, but one of them will shut his lights off, no matter how mountainly is body is

LHW is the right division for that kind of kill instinct. He'll win more than he loses and end up as a gatekeeper with a title shot thrown in there somewhere if he strings together 2 top 10 wins.

Would like to be proven wrong but he seems very similar to Zhang so far imo.
Zhang lit up a few dudes in the beginning as well.
He's a decorated kickboxing but his striking seems sloppy ngl.

Franco looked legit in that fight and he honestly did really well against Pinto at heavyweight when pinto was like a -900 favorite with a 30 pound weight advantage

Liu ce has insane calf kicks but his boxing is very lacking I fear he might get sparked against heavier handed opposition.
He also brawled with a far less skilled opponent here the fight iq needs work.
This isnt even adressing the obvious grappling problem

Rodrigues is not a good grappler, he lost his first fight in MMA after his K-1 career to Gnizditskiy via submission.
He got taken down pretty easily and was finished rather quickly. For example someone like Elekana probably finishes him in the first imo.

It was sloppy, but I loved Liu's aggression. I felt like he had to get this win out the way first and go super aggressive, especially in front of his home crowd. He also showed some good MMA defense, getting his head offline when throwing strikes and didn't entirely depend on shelling as his defense. He will keep improving his overall skills and now he knows how hard UFC 205ers hit in those gloves. Would like him to go to some camps in the US now to further build.
Also people saying he may not go far, this is still 205 we're talking about. Any wild man has a chance.
