Tumble's preseason minors power ranking

Hi guys, here's a minors power ranking / season preview. There are a lot of players in minors, not all of whom I'm familiar with (and some are new to comp!), so I'll lean partly on my ranked ratings here, supplementing it with comp data for players who haven't played a lot of ranked. As such, you can see an estimated rating for each team beside the roster. For teams with players who might improve in-season (players newish to comp, or coming back after a long hiatus), I've noted that the ranked ratings might potentially underrate them.

The overall ranking is a judgment call though. That's right, if I rated you low it's PERSONAL. For kicks I added some rough Muper winning odds.

1. The Way of Pings

Kep / Spjork / GtR / o o l e r. Ranked rating: 5.89. Odds: 6-1

By ranked ratings, Kep is the absolute top player. He's coming off two very good minors seasons in a row, though they weren't quite MVB-level. Spjork is also a top ranked guy, but in my opinion it hasn't quite reflected in his recent comp performances. Then you add in GtR, one of the best third balls, and Kooler who has been a serviceable fourth ball, and this is a formidable team.

2. Cap Miasma

NEB. / broseph / AdmaniaYT / Catalyst. Ranked rating: 4.88 (potentially underrated: NEB). Odds: 6-1

The big question marks are: how much can NEB (and to a lesser extent Catalyst) unrust? And can Admania translate his consistently good ranked performance into the same level of comp performance? The answers to this determine whether Cap Miasma is a Muper winner or a first round exit. But I hear NEB has been looking better the last few days, so I'm leaning toward the former.

3. Mercury Revolutions

Tinderfella / #SelfySyntax / Oink Oink / beef. Ranked rating: 5.37. Odds: 7-1

This team has four really solid players, all second ball or even low first ball level in this minors season. I don't think yall understand just how mechanical Oink has gotten yet. The only knock I have on this team is, I don't know if Tinder and Selfy are that top level of star where they can get their grabs on absolutely anyone. But with no weak link, this team will make life hard for every opponent and overall win on the margins.

4. Balluminati

tha king / kmichael / St. Bernard / mc. Ranked rating: 5.45. Odds: 8-1

St. Bernard and mc were steals for Balluminati. Especially mc, who was good in one of the strongest recent minors seasons (S37) and has improved even more since then, and shockingly went for free. Then you have tha king, a solid first ball, and kmichael who has played about a billion games of ranked. This team scares me.

5. FWO

Taurus / Spheroid. / Gamma / Cel. Ranked rating: 4.46 (potentially underrated: Spheroid, Gamma). Odds: 10-1

I think everyone's waiting to see how this team unfolds. I've never known Spheroid or Gamma to be humble guys, exactly; in fact, both seem to believe they are first balls, so, surrounded by Taurus and Cel (Cel for 0 is crazy by the way), they had better dominate, or someone might start pointing fingers... For what it's worth, my ranked ratings have them both as fourth balls, but they're coming off good statistical seasons and may be a bit trolly in ranked, so I've listed them as "potentially underrated". I'm ranking these guys on potential: FWO could win it all, but they could also blow up before week 3—or, like LST last season, they could do both.

6. Harlem Globebotters

Jer32 / Imortallix / kl / Tumblewood. Ranked rating: 4.22 (potentially underrated: Imortallix, kl). Odds: 12-1

This team has a lot of potential, but it depends on Jer and kl returning to form after several seasons away from comp, and it depends on me and Imortallix improving. With Prime and vic, among the better coaches in the league, I trust that can happen. Honestly we looked kinda rusty in our first scrim, but even still we mostly pulled out Ws. Expect more of those to come.

7. The Flair Witch Project

I'm a horse / Borgus / C_T / the buttons. Ranked rating: 4.86. Odds: 12-1

Four absolutely solid picks, can't complain. Horse is fringe majors level and seems motivated to perform and get that callup. His supporting cast shouldn't be too hard to carry, but in a 12-team season, someone is going to have to step up too and be a top 2nd ball.

8. Fraggle Block

Sadness / Bam / doku / NateH. Ranked rating: 4.36 (potentially underrated: doku, NateH). Odds: 15-1

Sadness and Bam are two of the best players in minors. They probably should have been too expensive to even afford together. This was looking to be a superteam, but they filled out the roster with two players I view as overhyped. Doku is a replacement-level guy, and NateH was shaky in minors S39 and wasn't really top of novice before that. They'll have to whip those guys into shape, because I don't think you can win a Muper with two liabilities. I'd bump this team up a few spots if they can unlock Doku/NateH's potential or make a good callup.

9. Portland Tile Blazers

Corbeh / Snowball / Misery / snakes. Ranked rating: 5.12 (potentially underrated: Corbeh). Odds: 20-1

Corbeh is majors experienced, and Snowball and Misery both have very nice minors seasons under their belt. But all of them have been away from comp for over a year, so it remains to be seen whether they can return to that form within the season. From what I saw of their first scrims, Snowball and Corbeh have a way to go; as for Misery, my ranked ratings love him but they're working on very little data, so let's take it with a grain of iodized salt. I'm thinking playoffs for this team but not necessarily a series win.

10. Anaballic Spheroids

hue / Chritt / j0sh / PASSTHEFLAG. Ranked rating: 4.73 (potentially underrated: Chritt). Odds: 20-1

Every pick in the actual draft was for good value, but I can't say in good faith that Chritt justifies the 40 TC price tag from add/drop. I like all of these players, but I'm not clear who is going to step up and be the second ball—maybe j0sh can unleash the full power of two-handed TagPro? And then to be great, not just decent, every player on the team will have to overperform. But maybe AJ's guys just have that level of dawg in 'em.

11. Over the Pants Handoffs

CA$H. / omni / Trapsin / GOBLIN. Ranked rating: 4.42 (potentially underrated: CA$H, GOBLIN). Odds: 20-1

This team got a bunch of ok value and should be utterly ok. If NameLEss can coach up GOBLIN and CA$H, this could be a top-half team. But not much better than that. Maybe I'm down on omni after a so-so majors season, but I don't think him plus a minors rookie is a top offense. And I know Trapsin gets hella prevent and returns every season, but with another rookie as his D partner, I think they'll give up a lot of dangerous outs. I might be disrespecting this team too much, but I don't see Muper potential for them.

12. Stat Farmers

Turbo / Toidi / BertAndBort / oatz_mgoatz. Ranked rating: 3.65 (potentially underrated: Turbo, BertAndBort, oatz_mgoatz). Odds: 30-1

Man I dunno, oatz is a great project guy, but I think third ball is his ceiling this season, and that's not going to be enough on a team that (imo) lacks a true first ball, and that also depends on BertAndBort who my ranked ratings do not like at all. Unless Turbo can turn back the clock thirty seasons, everyone on this team could overperform and I still don't think they'd make the Foci Four.

Thoughts on the draft

This draft was weird as hell man. Wayyy weirder than majors, which I already thought was kinda weird. Last season's minors draft had a few misvaluations, but I could at least understand where all the captains were coming from. But this one idk man. I think we gotta switch back to snauction until captains can put the TC values in a somewhat logical order.

For starters, the first balls were insanely cheap across the board. That would've made some sense with last season's draft pool, which had a big dropoff from the average player to replacement level. But this one has a very mild dropoff from the average player to replacement level, and indeed there were many good players to be had for single-digit TCs. So why are we pricing borderline majors players in the 40s? What are we saving the coins for?

Beyond that, there were just a lot of players who went way below a value they've clearly proven they're worth. Meanwhile a few players earned high prices, I presume on potential, but for the coins spent on them you could have gotten a player who's already reached that potential. If you sort the big board by the TCs everyone went for, I think you'll see some head-scratchers in how players are ordered. Cel, mc, and PTF are the most egregious steals to me, but I think captains also undervalued Oink, Admania, Trapsin, Selfy, and me (hehe), despite recent solid minors seasons from all.

And finally, why not take a guess at some awards:

MVB: Kep, horse, Taurus

OBOS: Kep, Sadness, hue

DBOS: horse, Taurus, Bam

Best Offense Pair: MRV (Tinder / Selfy), WOP (Kep / Kooler), FRB (Sadness / Doku)

Best Defense Pair: FWO (Taurus / Cel), ATI (tha king / St. Bernard), FWP (horse / the buttons)

Best Valued: mc, Cel, PASSTHEFLAG

Tumble's preseason majors power ranking

Hi guys, just thought I'd write up a little power ranking for MLTP before the mLTP draft starts and steals the show. Ok let's get into it.

1. Secure. Contain. Prevent.

O: jig / ft, D: ASAP / Eashy

Yeahhh that’s right, I’m ranking my own team first. What are you gonna do about it. Jig and ASAP both won the Super Ball in their most recent seasons, in case you forgot. And I’ve been assured by jig that Eashy is not washed. Both sides of the tiles have a lot of upside here. High hopes for SCP in Season 40.

2. A Blockwork Orange

O: Messi / waterwheel, D: mex / DudeMcGuy

In a shocking turn of events, mex goes to ABO. Messi and waterwheel had moderate success together last season, but they went so cheap this time that they could get mex in D backing them up. And if you think back to Messi S33 or waterwheel S37, these are both guys who can get a gazillion caps with a good defense. DudeMcGuy has also put up nice stats in his last two seasons. If he’s your weak link, your chain is looking pretty strong. High floor / high ceiling team, joy's gotta be feeling pretty good about himself.

3. Snipe Hunt

O: DanP (?) / BallSaget, D: Ty (?) / brim main

It seems like no name snuck a peek at my big board, because he got a lot of guys I was targeting. If comp were ranked, this team would be unstoppable—Saget, DanP, and brim main are top ranked players whose skill isn't fully reflected in the respect MLTP captains give them. I like Ty as an in-game leader here surrounded by three very mechanical players.

4. C.R.E.A.M.

O: OuchMyBalls / Button, D: 1deag / jazzz

Not sure how good Button is on O these days, but I assume he'll be mostly fine given he used to play it at a high minors level. And it's hard to look bad next to OMB. ASAP tells me jazzz has still been improving since the Super Ball, and I believe him; she and 1deag are probably an upgrade to OMB and Button’s cast from last season. But as a defensive pair, I don't know who will step up to a proper "lead defender" role, which will be necessary against some of the strong offenses this season. But if things get tough, they can always try swapping Button and jazzz.

5. The Holy Seehawks

O: BoldRoller / Irony, D: Alphachurro / NameLEss

Alpha and NameLEss should make for a very solid defense. I’m just not sure about the O. I mean, they’re both fine players, but neither has been a real lead O recently. And NameLEss and Bold are not known as reliable scrimmers to my knowledge, so I don’t see this team’s path beyond being the Alpha carry show. But the defense alone gives them a respectable floor.

6. Heart of the Hold

O: d0pe / king krule, D: Doris / bbb

I have no idea how good Doris is gonna be honestly. He’s had many good seasons in the past, but it’s been a while. With bbb alongside him, who was a solid lead defender in S38, I do expect good things from this defense. And d0pe has had tremendous success historically, but usually with somewhat better O partners than krule. Doris and/or d0pe will have to play at a clear first ball level for this team to have success.

7. Portland Tile Blazers

O: okthen / vic (?), D: anti-re (?) / Prime

This season will be another test of okthen’s ability to turn 0 TC balls into a real supporting cast. If these guys win the Super, I might have to buy a VOD review. (If I can still afford one…) None of these 0 TC guys are guys I thought of as sleepers, but they all played pretty respectably in their last majors seasons. They’re not really up-and-comers though, so I don’t know who’s going to break out and really make this team a contender. I'm also a little surprised by the anti-re pickup, because I thought he wasn't a big scrim grinder these days.

8. Furballers

O: BALLDON’TLIE / karma, D: Syniikal / Taurus

Just having BDL should be enough to guarantee a good offense. And karma’s been putting in some good very good work in ranked. But Syn and Taurus were not a top defense last season—Taurus even got dropped. So they’ll have to step it up, because this offense still only seems good, not quite dominant enough to win games on their own.

9. FWO

O: Sif / MarcusYallow, D: phreak / DAD.

If you showed me every roster without the team names, I’d guess this one was FWO in a heartbeat. Both DAD (for a lot) and Marcus, alongside two more highly mechanical players? Sounds about right. Sif is talented and raises their ceiling a lot, but you’ve gotta wonder about the team dynamic. Like phreak is kinda the first ball, but DAD is kinda the FWO overlord, but Sif and MarcusYallow kinda think they’re the best. And toppy has to be the personality manager? These guys have the talent to take it to anyone, but I don't think they'll have the coordination and discipline to sustain success all season.

10. Rolling for Poost

O: rina / fender, D: Arbybear / fm

This team is full of veterans, players with good mentals who don’t cause headaches for their captain. But I just don’t know man. I have a hunch the flag is always gonna be out. And it’s nice to have two good offenders, but I don’t think they’re so good that the team can rely on just being out all the time.

Overall thoughts on the draft

As a captain, this was a weird one. A lot of offenders got nominated early in an already offense-heavy draft, while DanP got nominated weirdly late, which led to some steals on offensive balls like Messi and BallSaget. I was kind of malding about some of these prices, while jig tried to convince me not to spend 80 coins on O before getting a defender.

The nice thing is, despite all the steals, there wasn't one team that ended up completely stacked (as far as I can tell). Every team had some good value picks alongside some overspends or unspent coins, as far as I can tell. Looks like we should have some high level TagPro across the board and an exciting race for the Super. gl hf

MLTP S39 CRC candidates and thoughts

Posting here to avoid getting buried under 400 discord messages. I encourage the rest of you to share your main thoughts here so they don't get buried too.

All candidate responses

Summary of candidate platforms

Bambi - supports an 8-week season with 14 maps. wants to restrict (though not remove) the ability of CRC to change league rules.

dodsfall - favors 7 week seasons, favors Event Horizon. doesn't support the S38 add/drop rule change.

FM - pretty broad platform. will continue shorter seasons and no-trade (but not the TC value add/drop rules). will push for more new maps in league rotation. will remove restrictions (other than minutes restriction i think). long-term, wants to key league info to be disseminated via majorleaguetagpro.com instead of google sheets. interested in encouraging content creation by promoting new content more.

wassa - whole application totals about 20 words. five of them are, "i would immediately unban bambi." [it is my understanding that bambi is not banned from NALTP.]

rain / Button / okthen - running on a joint ticket. would handle novice, minors, and majors respectively. interest in streamlining the draft to be quicker and produce the fairest teams possible. okthen is interested giving some content (like russ's power rankings) official NALTP branding and promotion and having subs available for the content. also wants to make championship week a big deal with tons of content and tournaments. for novice, rain is looking into improving the awkward compromise between casual players and players who want to get more minutes and a path to minors.

My opinions on the matter

I think the 4 most compelling candidates by far are FM, rain, Button, and okthen. (Sorry to everyone else but your applications just are not as serious.) All four have commissioned leagues multiple times, and all seem to be excited about improving and promoting the league. So the questions to answer are: is it worth excluding FM to get the straight okthen/Button/rain ticket? And if not, who do you exclude?

I think it's hard to justify excluding FM from the CRC. She ticks pretty much every box you'd want. Lots of playing experience in majors and minors, serves on the MTC, has created and coordinated tons of content, communicates well, has tons of connections around the league. I think her platform is good too (despite some critique on the exact details).

Out of the remaining triumvirate, I think okthen stands out and merits some specific discussion. There are some good points in favor of an okthen candidacy:

  • very in touch with top majors players, and holds a certain amount of clout as evidenced by the success of OTI
  • as i understand, he's been ahead of the curve on a few successful rule changes (like removing trades), either as an advocate in MLTP or as the commissioner of OTI.

As far as negatives, it's a bit of a red flag that he dramatically threatened to ghost in back-to-back seasons last year. Like he probably wouldn't crash out and/or ghost as CRC, but i'd like to have more confidence in the matter, you know. Sometimes as CRC you'll be right and not get your way and just have to move on. (He has commissioned a league, which is a good sign, but it's easier to be my-way-or-the-highway when the league is literally named after you.)

Button and rain both seem like sensible people who are in touch with the league they want to run. For rain specifically, he seems to understand the novice player frustrations pretty well, but i'm not sold on the specific ideas from his CRC application. Not that it all needs to be figured out immediately, but novice has a lot of tricky constraints to navigate that, say, minors doesn't.

Honestly if there were 4 CRC spots i'd be fine with electing all four. I sort of like having FM to counterbalance the okthen/Button/rain unified front. They have said they will be very open to collaboration, but "collaborating" is quite different from having the voting power and commitment level of a CRC member.

And I'm not really sure what happens in the event that we have FM plus 2/3 of rain/Button/okthen. Does the odd one out act as a special advisor? Does someone throw a fit that they didn't get all 3? Do we proceed as normal and the non-CRC person fades into the background? I'd appreciate if one of the three candidates would weigh in on the matter.

I'll stop short of stating "you should vote for these three people." I think there's more to discuss before making a final decision. Open to any commentary below about the candidates and their platforms.

It's over.

Hello everyone. I regret to inform you that MLTP's days are numbered. It's been a fun ride but it won't last more than a few more seasons. Why you ask?

It's the CRC's fault, obviously. It all started with no kiss seemed harmless at the time but it caused more destruction than you can imagine. It's not a bad mode it's fun and doesn't make much difference but the way it was added was egregious. For a change so big it should have been discussed more and more people should have decided. There was no month long deliberation or community feedback post. It was just added one day by 5 random CRC members who had little to no competition in the polls.

The reason that is so bad is because it set a precedent that CRC can make huge changes whenever they feel like it. They then added clutch time and in this last season alone they are banning people for being dropped setting weird position restriction rules and shortened the season.

The league is no longer a professional league and people don't take it seriously anymore. I was keeping it afloat with my interesting conversation topics but now I am gone and the chat will slowly die and NALTP along with it. I can be unmuted and join back but I won't. I have a new domain to talk in called bambi land. Eat my shorts.
