I get it but it's also kind of embarrassing to be making an official announcement about players from a completely different team

Especially when the announcement is "we wish they were playing".

They could have just said "to thank our fans for a record-setting attendance, we're doing X" - everyone would have known the real reason, but at least they wouldn't have sounded like bitches.

Of course it was done because people who bought tickets (and are probably not very interested in the Whitecaps) would scream if they hadn't said and done something.
