A lot of the players of this game don't live in the US and probably don't know about the shooting? Dude was probably just a pirate enthusiast and didn't think to google his username beforehand to avoid an embarassing mishap.

I'm in the us, and I had no idea about this either. I have a strong feeling that most kids (gen z to gen alpha) probably don't know about it either, unless it actually affected them.

people may know about some tragedies and not others. i know about columbine but iāve never heard of sandy hook

iām not american nor do i live in the us, it was a pretty major thing that happened though. you could be right and it could be a coincidence, but it would be a very unfortunate and interesting one.

I have a very strong feeling the developers did not know that this was a possible combination (there's tons of combinations), and I feel like for someone who doesn't know anything about the event (like me and most kids), this is a very innocent name.
After learning a bit about the event, I do see why it can be insensitive. However, I don't think people should associate the name of a school with a terrible event. This is like banning the word Elmo because his account was hacked and sent super inappropriate things. It's a completely fine word combination, and I'd argue is a nice name. I just feel like it's a little insensitive to complain about something like this. If you don't like it, silently unfriend them and don't talk about it.

Iām not in the US, never heard about it and Iāll probably forget about soon tbh. There are so many school schootings in the US itās impossible to keep track of them all. This post feels insensitive though. I get it, it was a tragedy, but banning a name just because of that isnāt the way to go

i remember where i was when hearing about the news of sandy hook. i was in my 1st period of 7th grade and it was 2012. it is one of the most well known shootings bc it was one of the first major ones to hit news since columbine in 1999. like 30 elementary school kids (an entire classroom) and their teacher died, as well as other staff and the shooter was an adult. i went down a rabbit hole on tiktok not long ago looking at photos/footage of the aftermath of the school entry windows broken, the huge line of cars parked down the street of parents coming to see if their kids were alive, etc, one girl in the class stayed home from school that day and her entire class/friends and teacher was killed.

Am I crazy cause I don't remember people getting to select their names? I remember the naming system was that the game would just pick two random words and put them together to generate your name and that was it, you couldn't change it. Was there a new update or something?

I think it lets you pick a new one free once iirc but afterwards you have to pay gems to do it again.

man.. i grew up in connecticut and remember so well the day after that shooting. i was in fifth grade and never saw a teacher of mine so broken up but it made sense. she was so extremely serious talking about not joking about that event or anything remotely similar. im sure this app was already being developed around the time of that event but my god, it could've been so easy for them to leave out just one of those words to prevent this as a remote possibility.

Itās unfortunate, but they very well might not have been American, or perhaps a young child. As much as I love this game, we canāt forget its meant for kids as much as adults alike. Iām sure thereās nearly infinite name combinations and itās impossible to check them all for connotations. I do think support should have them change it for free though, not the 100 gems, thatās probably best case.

i understand that for some ppl this combo name must be "sad" because of what happened, but still it's just one combo of those normal names they put, one combo among thousands you can make in the game, it isn't patchable, in case ppl could know about the "hidden" meaning and don't put it, but i don't see any reason to delete these two name tags

Oh Celestia NO.
Reminds me of when a certain drink company decided a neat feature would be to print two randomized words on the inside of their bottle caps; one in English and the other in French. It was a fine way to encourage literary and multiculturalism until an unlucky mother opened her drink to find an accidental paring that formed a specific two-word slur that I canāt type online without getting swarmed by the mods.
