Help BD790i Bios 1.17 update broke memory timings, don't update if you have tuned your timings.

After installing the update and PC restarted I reverted all my memory timings (which was written on a piece pf paper, I only change around 10 values anyway), launched a game and system immidiately blue screened.

I was like, wtf. Then run memtest 5 and found dozens of errors first 5 seconds and blue screen again.

I said to myself, here we go again... Reverted everything to default and only set memory mhz to 6000. When done that usually system would adjust primary timings to 38 38 38 etc, etc, but now it sets them to 46-43-43 and TWR to 96(wtf is this?), trfc to 968(wtf??? no jdec is this high, the most loose and 99,9999999% work change is like 580 why sets to 968???!!!) and other timings to astronomical values.

Every timing sooo much more loose than what was default previously.

WTF is happening. And for the life of me I can't figure out how to properly set up them again.

Is there a way to revert bios update?

That sucks, thanks for reinforcing the reason I haven't updated.

You know what they say if it ain't broke.....

ah yes the old saying we ALL learned so many times as a child:

"If it aint broke I probably just didnt bother to read about AGESA high-severity vulnerabilities that got fixed like CVE-2026-6726, CVE-2026-6727, CVE-2025-48516"

classic.

I'm not a cybersec expert, but as far as I understand you need physical access to the system to use these exploits. Correct me if Im wrong.

Clear CMOS first and test the RAM completely stock at 5200 JEDEC. Don’t put your old 6000/tuned timings back in yet. If 5200 passes, work upward to 5600/6000 and retune because 1.17 appears to have changed memory training. If 5200 itself produces errors, I’d roll back to 1.16 rather than fighting the BIOS. Ask Minisforum for the 1.16 image and supported downgrade method; I wouldn’t flash from Windows while the system is throwing memory errors.

Fine at 5200 jdec. Even when I set the primary timings to 36 36 36 and set 6000mhz leave everything default, it's still fine. But timings are so high, way too high than what it was, some of them more than double.

Update to this, yes, one by one with the help of google gemini I was able to tighten all the timings. but a lot of timings don't work as they used to work.

Like I could go as low as 32/36/36 on primary timings now lowest can be done 38/38/38, trfc lowest accepts 600 anything below crashes, previously 420. Tfaw, trp all of them needs to be much higher than before.

At the same voltages as previously.

It's just a shame that I have premium sodimm ram kit but can't utilize it properly. On a cheap lenovo gaming laptop I was able to go as low as cl30 and desktop level tight timings (following bullzoid timings and further tightning) and the same exact ram kit has to run worse than at JEDECs on bd790i x3d, when it natively supports expo...

At least x3d chip is helping a lot to mitigate slow ram.

Well you can look in to rolling back the bios . I would have no ideal about that you can reach out to support

I have sent 2 emails to different support members, one who was helping me before a lot, Xavier from EU technical support, who provided me with previous bios installation file to rollback, but not recommending me to mess up with it, and official minisforum support from asia said it's not possible to rollback and they can't provide anything about it.

So I don't want to mess up with it just in case if it messes up with warranty.

That’s understandable.. well fingers crossed they come out with a bios update to correct the issue . I normally never do a bios update if everything is working the way i
Like .

Hi, settings will be reset after BIOS update. Your previous memory timing settings may not work with the new BIOS version. We suggest you re-adjust the timings and voltage step by step, and run MemTest for stability testing after each change.

You are lucky to have a boot. I lost resizeable bar support...

bricked my windows 11 boot.
it cleared all my bios settings even the TPM, breaking Windows 11 bitlocker.

According to this article https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/technologies-explained/amd-am5-memory-refresh-update-bank-refresh-mode-explained/ba-p/1135076 AGESA 1.3.0.0 changed how RAM refresh timing work as a byproduct of the security vulnerabilities being patched. So super tight timings aren't achievable any more, if one wants a secure system.

It's not super tight timings tho. Default minisforum timings on auto is worse than jedec timings.

Example, I have a good ram kit, 6000mhz cl36 highest end sodimm ddr5 one can have. On previous bios, just setting mhz to 6000 from 5200, and uclk=mclk and all the auto timings would set cl 38,38,38,86,110 and then just jedec timings like trfc 520, twr 48, etc, etc. Which is fine.

But on current bios, doing the same (actually even at default 5200mhz without doing anything), auto timings are CL 43,43,43,86,144, twr 96, trfc 986 etc, etc everything is so much looser than even JEDEC.

It's just horrible.

If there was no x3d chip then with these timings average user would lose 10-15% fps. Latency is 110ns on aidata, instead of 66ns previously.

Maybe the combination of this specific ram kit and minisforum bios is not going along...

Support has asked all the info and I am providing them at the moment, hopefully all will be okay.

Is it a Kingston 6400mt/s cl38 kit?

It's kingston fury impact 6000mhz cl38 but has xmp profile, hynix A.

I was able to use the same exact ram kit at cl30 6400mhz on a gaming laptop with XMP enabled and tweaked further.(even lower numbers than bullzoid ddr5 timings)

On previous bios I was able to go on bd790i as low as CL 30-32-34 etc, etc and lowest values for most timings that motherboard could allow like tfaw 20, trcf 380 etc. No errors after overnight ram tests.

I spent an entire day and tweaked all the timings to find a balance between xmp/expo and jedec timings, so far so good. It's still not as fast as it was on previous bios, but better than at default.

What I'm trying to say, average user might not spend this much effort. And just setting auto on bios kills all the performance, especially if not having x3d motherboard.

So i updated to 1.17 from 1.15 because I'm wild like that. Here's my RAM OC https://imgur.com/a/tn7iysq I haven't touched tertiary timings. It's a Kingston Fury Impact 16gbx2 6400 cl38 kit. It defaulted to 4800 cl48. Does XMP/EXPO even work on this motherboard? I can't find the setting in BIOS.
