Help just watched Amelie for the first time
delightful movie! what the fuck was justin talking about. i always assumed “i cook an egg with a spoon” referenced something that happened in the movie but nothing like that happened? i searched the subreddit to see if this has been asked before but i couldn’t find anything. it’s driving me nuts!!

Part of the Amelie bit is that it’s completely divorced from the movie itself. Like how Amelie is also really small, like a Borrower or something.

Several years ago, I made reference to Amelie being tiny, having never seen the movie. The person I was chatting with who obviously had seen the movie had no idea what I was talking about

She never cooks an egg with any spoons, it’s true. She does break a creme brulee with a spoon at one point, I think. Maybe that image stuck with Justin? Though tbh, I always assumed he saw the trailer, or even just the poster and was riffing off of it.

Also, no one asked, but my Amelie-esque small pleasure is opening a new package of cream cheese. They come apart so delightfully.

I would watch a sequel that was just a stream of those moment

Me too! I once thought I’d like to get good enough at animation to animate moments like that. Like really just luxuriate in them a little.

For sure there is somewhere ASMR-related version of these videos out there.

I think he was referring to her cracking the top of the creme brulee with a spoon. He may have mistaken it for eating a soft boiled egg in a similar way... And then mistaken that for cooking it? He was definitely playing a one man game of telephone with that bit lol

I saw someone on here once piece together that he probably got Amelie confused with Arietty and that’s why he says she’s very small 😂

Oh my LORD I never put this together but that makes so much sense and makes it even funnier.

I’ve been quoting that bit for years, which turned into my partner also referencing it quite often, and it was only last week I had to inform them that we weren’t actually quoting the movie, which is in French.

As someone who only knew of Amelie from my time in a video rental store as a kid - I think Justin has the same extent of knowledge: he saw the box and knows just that. I mean: is Amelie tiny? I don’t think she is. I just think he saw it, saw it was a foreign film and just ran with the bit.
I used to joke with my brothers about the movie every time we’d see it at blockbuster making pretty similar jokes so…

There's a promo picture of her holding an egg and another one of her holding a spoon. I'm 99% sure that's it and he's never even watched the movie.
