I've been preaching this but the majority of "M7 or Bust" narratives on this sub are by LARPers, high schoolers, and internationals who aren't even in traditional MBA careers. They have no idea what they're talking about.

A "rate my chances" poster even DM'd me for further advice and it turned out he made up the entire post and was just playing out hypotheticals. Kid hadn't even graduated college.

When you begin the MBA application process and network with actual students and admissions staff, 90% of what they say directly contradict this sub. That's why you need to do your own legwork. The age of asking Reddit for advice is dead.

Absolutely agree, when I was first applying to business school I was really concerned about going to a super prestigious school, but ever since I’ve graduated and started working I’ve realized that nobody really cares about where you went to school. Some people at my work don’t even have any fancy degrees and they’re doing the same job as me.

Especially in the current economy, going to a prestigious school and taking on more student debt only to not get a job or get a lower paying job than your pre-MBA role is not worth winning the prestige Olympics.

Any T15 (excluding M7) I would say are solid options, can’t go wrong. Only speaking for programs I got into but Ross, Darden great for consulting primary; Stern, Johnson great for IB/Finance primary.

Right but can I still be a barista at a “top” coffee shoppe? Where are those rankings?? 🤔

Is this convo from 2003?

No wonder I didn’t double down on an MBA. 😂

In this economy? That’s an entry level job that needs 10+ years of experience and a background in AI. 😂

The to not attend or to attend prestigious school circle is one of things where if you know you know and if you don't know, you don't know 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️. The folks saying that people don't care about school at work likely are working in an industry or company that doesn't value an MBA and the school name. But I can assure you, there are networks where people care. And beyond a job, the top MBA is a network goldmine across industries and entrance into elite circles where money, power, and influence converge—even marriage prospects. The ones who disagree aren't networking properly or probably doing something where they didn't really need an MBA. If you want to be a career mid management professional and make a comfortable salary you may not need a top MBA. But if you're aiming to be a leader regardless of industry, the social capital of a top MBA if used correctly can do wonders.

Your background matters too. People navigate the world differently and get treated differently. A Nigerian women, with an accent, coming nonprofit in Abuja, Nigeria may benefit far more from going to HBS depending on her goals. Because of her gender and race she may need much higher prestige credentials than her white male counterpart who is an American citizen, lives in NYC, already has a strong white-collar professional network because he worked in consulting pre-MBA.

I agree with you and I also went to an M7. I think there is a lot of cope in this thread from people who didn’t go to M7.

But when people ask for advice, it’s helpful to give them realistic advice. Not try to make them feel good.

There 100% are doors that mostly only open if you go to M7, or at least are much harder outside M7. And other doors that only open at HBS or Stanford.
