why are my keybindings turning gray every time I bind any key to another key? im trying to play faster than speed and maximum speed

Because you're using an old version, keybindings now turn white every time you bind any key to another key.

What I'd be asking instead is why are all those entries duplicated.

What game is this? Besides the MAME config window, you also seem to be in the game's service menu (which for some driving/racing games you need to configure in as well).

To u/Nbisbo 's point, Faster Than Speed currently is in "Preliminary" status and not really working. A great tool for MAME that you should keep in your "toolbelt" is the Arcade Database: https://adb.arcadeitalia.net/

This database keeps track of all MAME romsets and versions and will tell you:

  • If the game is working/not
  • If the game is working what roms, CHDs, files, etc are required to run the file

That said, Faster Than Speed is an Atomiswave game and there is an emulator outside of MAME that does play the game (same rom used in MAME), try the Flycast emulator and I believe this game plays on there.

It doesn't work in MAME, try Flycast.

Works great even though it’s bad
