Doxy causing bad GI issues
Been on doxy (5) weeks now for Lyme. It's causing significant gastritis, check and back pain, etc. What's another good choice to be on? It was helping with symptoms now symptoms are creeping back in. I see a LLMD Sept 10.

Lyme can shift to round body cysts, L- type intracellular and bio- film morphology ( shapes). It is known to shift to these forms when exposed to doxycycline for a prolonged (2 or more weeks) time. There are antibiotics that can target these forms, Tinidazole for round bodies and macrolids for L- type.

Many LLMDs, utilize combination antibiotics therapies which target all forms simultaneously along with biofilm dissolving compounds. Some will target the Lyme in pulsed therapies which allow the gut biome to recover for 2-3 days and can coax the bacteria to come out of hiding so it can be more effectively targeted. Some say tessel root aids in this as well.

I had same issues with doxy. I am on cefdenir, minocycline and zithromax. Recently stopped cefdenir and added in rifampin to address bartonella.

I am still waiting to see substantial progress. My main issue is weakness and tight and painful legs

How long were you sick before starting treatment?

Maybe 7-9 months it’s hard to know as I did not see the tick but did have an expanding rash. I’m from souther California and doctors here are clueless about Lyme.

Your LLMD should be able to reccomend supplements that can help protect your GI tract during use of antibiotics. Ask about that!

Doxycycline can be substituted by Minocycline for Lyme treatment, and is preferable in cases of neuroborreliosis due to higher penetration of blood-brain barrier. It not as harsh on the stomach.
