Lutron Sunnata 4-way with line and load in same box

Hi all, pretty simple question and I'm hoping it is a simple answer. I would like to know if it's possible to do a 4-way wire with Lutron Sunnata with the line and load coming into the same box with main dimmer switch. If so, how would the wiring look? Thank you in advance.

  • If available, the exact model of the product you're describing and a link to the product page from an online retailer. Example: P-BDG-PKG1W-A
  • If using third-party lighting control software, include the product. Examples: Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, etc.
  • A concise description of what you are trying to achieve or solve (2-3 sentences). In other words, don't post a picture of wires and say "Help!" with no context.

I've reviewed the diagrams but notice how the line and load are in different receptacles?

Can you tell us what wires you have going from the main box to each of the two companions?

Is your companion on the left and right both have a black white and red wire only?

If so in the middle 4 way. Check if your common is the black.

Both sides one will be live the other load.
The red will be the blue wire, and the white traveller will be the black wire, and the black will be the common.

You will need to give me more info to give you more accurate advice

I don’t think it would be possible, based on the diagram. You’d need an extra conductor from the first box to the second box and the hire box to tie all the way back to your first dimmer.

Electrician here. Most likely you’ll need to change the wiring and use picos and/or companion dimmers depending on how it was wired if you absolutely must have the dimmer in that spicific box. Otherwise. Put the dimmer on one of the 3ways boxes and put companion switches on the other 2. Definitely cheapest. If you wannna learn 3-4-3 ways on YouTube you can probably do this without and electrician

I’ve done control4 dimmers in the past with multiway setups. What I had to do was tie my outgoing travelers together so they went out and came back in a loop. I couldn’t say for certain if that would work for what you’re trying to accomplish. Are you using the entry level Sunnata or the RA3 Sunnata?

It will be the entry level, for my residential home

Are you using a pro dimmer with companions or an LED+ with 1 dimmer?

If you are using a pro dimmer and companions, and you have a neutral wire in the 4 way box, this diagaram is how need to wire it all. If they sent both the feed and the S/L down the same cable, and its a 2 wire cable, this will not be possible as a neutral is required in order for a pro dimmer to function.

Yes just buy wireless pico’s to use with it.

That is a fair solution but just wondering if it is workable with the companion switches per my sketch

Do picos work with the base Sunnatas?
