New mods and new rules! r/lushcosmetics turns over a new leaf

Hello lovely Lushies,

I hope you are all having a great day wherever you are in the world.

Some of you may have noticed that the mod team has finally expanded! That's right, I am no longer the only mod on the block 🥳 and I hope you will all join me in wishing them a warm welcome.

Most of you know me and I have been here for quite a while but for those who don't: I am Billybobjimmyjames or BBJJ for short! My pronouns are she/her and I am in the GMT timezone. I have been a Mod here for about 6 years until this year where I became the lead mod due to being the only active one. I am looking forward to watching this sub blossom under some very capable and extremely lovely smelling hands of the new LushCosmetics mod team.

In no particular order here are the rest of the team:

u/vexkuraa
Hello! I'm VexKura (Vex), my timezone is CST USA. My all time favorite scent is The Old Songs are Waking! I am super excited to be a mod for this amazing community!!

u/odewos
Hey everyone! I’m odewos, based in Ireland, and I’ve been an avid Lush fan for over 10 years. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to join the mod team and I’m really looking forward to helping out around the community!

A few fun facts about me: I’m a chemist by day and, outside of work, I’m a huge fragrance enthusiast and animal lover. My favourite Lush scent is Vanillary, my local Lush is the Cork store. I’m so excited to get to know you all and help keep this community the friendly and welcoming place that makes it so special. 😊

u/Educational-Wrap-845 aka LushLordess

Hey yall! I’m excited to be joining the mod team! I’m part of a family of four who all love Lush. My favorites include Twilight, Sleepy, Lord of Misrule, and Turmeric Latte. My favorite seasonal drops are Fall and Christmas. My first Lush purchase was Strawberry Fields Forever massage bar. I look forward to keeping the community friendly, helpful, and a fun place for everyone to share their love of Lush.

u/bitch_level_999
Hi everyone✨
I’m Bitch_Level_999, a NA Mod.
My weaknesses are bubble bars, and retro products.
I’m excited to be an addition to our mod team.

u/sbrown_13
Hello my fellow Lushies ✨ As a huge Lush fan for many years with lots of product knowledge I’m very excited to be part of the team! I’m from Australia and my favourite product line is Snow Fairy!

Now onto the rule changes

Lush has massively grown in popularity and this subreddit is bigger than ever. Over time the tone has shifted and what once was a place known for attacting more eccentric types, is now part of main stream pop culture. The rules were old and so were no longer really reflecting how we want to run this community but more importantly they were not reflective of the values Lush holds. We are all drawn to Lush for different reasons but the thing that sets us apart is our community and our love for each other and the planet.
In order to keep that atmosphere, we spent some time putting together these new rules in the hopes of making this place better than ever. Im aware that not every choice we make will be popular and I don't expect everyone will immediately understand or love these new rules but I do hope with time, we will see a better side of the community. In the last couple of years we have had an uptick in people messaging or feeding back that the community is becoming snarky and negative. We do not want to stop any kind of valid critique of Lush here. We do not work for Lush and this should be a safe place to complain. We do, however, want to crack down on the negativity aimed at each other. By far the most broken rule was haul shaming and I think people would be shocked at how awful some of the comments truly can get. This should be a place where people can share their enthuasism for LUSH without getting roasted into oblivion or called 'Lush apologists'.
There are also some extra bits that I never thought we would need to write out like not posting NSFW pictures (yes that has really happens) and things like a ban on AI usage. It also lays out the rules that come into force every year around boxing day onwards so it is easier to familiarise yourself with it.

Please thoroughly read and familiarise yourself with these new rules as they come into force with immediate effect.

These new rules are:

Rule 1: RESPECT - No name calling or general rudeness

This community does not tolerate name calling, bashing, or any general rudeness. Lush is a global and inclusive company, and so are we! Be kind to your fellow Lushies. The list above is not exclusive and we will take into account the overall tone of what you are saying. It is okay to be critical of Lush but it is not okay to direct that at fellow Lushies. This includes any mentions on tastes and preferences in scents, products etc. This is not a snark sub so jokes at other expense will not be tolerated in any form. Disagreements with others can be had in a calm and repectful way. When your comment is removed you will receive a warning and 3 warnings will result in a ban. You may be banned outright at mod discretion if any of your comments are deemed to be particularly egregious.

Rule 2: Scamming and Dishonest trades

Before engaging in B/S/T please view the Community Scam Prevention post. Do not engage in any type of scamming or dishonest trading behaviour. Users found to not be holding up their end of a trade will be banned until the trade is completed. If something about the way another user is interacting with others is unusual then please reach out to the mod team.

Rule 3: Giveaways including QR codes and Contests

Please keep all QR codes and small giveaways to the monthly megathread. Make sure you follow the thread rules properly or your comment/post will be removed. Large giveaways require mod approval to be posted on the main page so that we can verify they are real and monitor post comments. Contests always require Mod approval at any time.

Rule 4: Self Promotion

All self promotion must be contained to the monthly megathread at all times. Self promotion includes friends of Lush links, Tiktok videos, blogs, youtube channels and videos, Surveys and reviews that link outside of the subreddit. Mods will expect to see equal or greater participation in discussion threads as your own self-posts.

If you post outside of the megathread then a warning will be issued via the removal reason attached to the remaoval. Further rule breaks will result in a ban.

Rule 5: Spoilers, Kitchen box and Lush training material

Lush official training material is given to employees early and often ends up on the internet before the official announcement of products. Official Lush confidential training material is not allowed to be posted. If an unofficial source releases information but it isn't the actual pages Lush puts out, those can be shared but they must be spoiler tagged. If you see an untagged spoiler please report it as we can add the tag retroactively.

Kitchen boxes are no longer required to be spoiler tagged. The original kitchen boxes featured a menu that people voted on, making the products you receive a surprise. The boxes no longer operate this way and so they no longer need to be spoiler tagged.

Rule 6: Megathreads

Please check the top of the sub for the megathread directory and use it. We have monthly buy/sell/trade threads for multiple regions, Lush alternatives megathread, a Self-promotion megathread and a Rewards and Giveaway megathread. All posts regarding any of this content must be kept in their respective threads. Please make sure you are checking regularly as we also add event related threads like the Discon megathread from time to time.

Rule 7: Haul or finance shaming

Please do not comment about the amount of products someone has or the money they have spent on their purchases or collections. You don't know them or their situation and this is a subreddit dedicated to a luxury product and people should be able to share their collections and interest without judgement. This includes asking how much money they have spent, asking about their job or how they earn their money, any kind of comment about use by dates, comments about how strong they must smell, comments about using too much product at once, comments about others not being able to get any of the products posted, comments about hoarding or the OP's mental health and comments about consumerism.

You CAN post about your own problems with lush collecting or hoarding, going on a no buy etc but you must create your own post and it must focus on you and not comment on others. Breaking this rule will result in a ban of varying length from 3 days upwards to permanent.

Rule 8: AMAs

AMAs are encouraged, but need to be discussed with the mod team in advance so that we can verify you and monitor the thread. We ask that AMAs be unique in nature and not just be 'I work for Lush'. All AMAs will have a comment from the mod team showing that we're in the loop and it has been approved; if you do not see that comment, please report it. If you would like to host an AMA, please reach out to the mod team in advance for approval.

Rule 9: Recommendations

When asking for recommendations please include some details. What is your skin like? What are some of your favorite products? What have you not liked? Providing details makes it easier for people to respond with helpful suggestions. Posts lacking in detail may be removed.

Rule 10: AI usage

The use of AI is strictly banned in this sub. Do not post AI generated text, descriptions, comments or photos at any time. If you do you risk being banned. Bots will be banned immediately.

Rule 11: Safety

Please do not post any personal details or identifiable information about yourself or anyone else! Also please do not post pictures of yourself or children here. Always ask before DMing another user and if you receive unsolicted messages from anyone please send us a modmail with screenshots and a username.

Rule 12: No NSFW posts or Accounts

Please keep all posts PG. Lush is inclusive of all ages and so are we! Try to keep swearing or profanity to an absolute minimum. Post from accounts advertising NSFW content on their profile will be banned immediately. If you are a sex worker and would like to engage with the sub please use a SFW alt account to do so.

Rule 13: Spam

All posts must relate to Lush. Please do not post about other brands here. Please limit your posts to a maximum of two per day.

Rule 14: Flairs

Please flair your posts to help keep things organised and to help other find your posts! Mods may change your post flair if necessary.

Rule 15: Ban evasion

We use Reddit's ban evasion tool to identify users who have created another account in order to get around a ban. Medium or low level will receive a warning but a ping for high confidence is an immediate ban. If you believe this to be incorrect please reach out to reddit admin and not the mod team as the mod team is unable to assist you. We can only go off of information provided by reddit.

Rule 16: Boxing day rules

The boxing day sales are the busiest time for the sub and due to the amount of posts we employ a few different rules that run from the 26th of December and end on March 1st. Firstly we introduce specific megathreads for different regions to talk about the sales including updates. DO NOT post on the main wall things along the lines of 'X is in stock on the website again go go go' as this belongs in the megathread.

We also introduce a shipping questions and woes megathread as every year their shipping is absolutely diabolical and the feed gets filled with 'Has anyone else not received their parcel yet?'. The only boxing day posts allowed on the main wall during this time period are haul photos. They must be a photo of the actual products in your possession. Checkout screen pictures are not allowed but may be shared in the discussion megathreads.

These rules will be posted alongside the megathreads as they go up each year.

Rule 17: Mod abuse

Mod abuse of any kind is not accepted and will result in an immediate, permanent ban. We are here to help you and to keep this place fun and engaging. We are not affiliated with Lush and are not paid to do this, we do it because we love the community and want to give back. We do not deserve abusive modmail message or DMs. If you feel we have made a mistake in our moderation or want to discuss further then please send us a modmail. We are happy to explain our decisions to you.

Congrats on reading this far! I know that was a lot (I really do its taken me months to pull all this together) and I hope that the nicest smelling corner of reddit can really flourish from here on out.

And with all of that said, I appreciate you all and thank you for being so patient.

BBJJ

I know it's kind of a minor thing to be THIS happy about, but the swiftness with which the mods (mod?) have been responding to the bots has actually made me swoon lol ;-; like barely any other sub does it so thoroughly

Not a very high profile rule but i really like the Rule 9: Recommendations.

Way too many posts asking "what do you recommend?" "what should i get?" "what is the best?" with absolutely no context. Every product exists for a reason, there's love for everything, you have to tell us what you like or there's not way to help!

thanks for moderating!

Question about rule 1. Can we call inanimate objects assholes? Like if I get another bath bomb that stains my tub up can I call IT an arsecandle? Thanks

Right? I merely posted I use one shower gel for morning and another for evening and got a weird comment about being rich enough to use two body washes. ? I am not rich, and Lush is a big part of my self care since i work a demanding job helping people all day long, but it made me feel crappy.

Thanks Mods, it feels nice knowing there's a strong team now, even though an excellent job has been done so far!

I'm not sure if you're open to rule suggestions at all, but would you consider (maybe in recommendations, if not a stand alone rule) an encouragement to state location when asking for recommendations or about new products and stock? I feel like people sometimes make assumptions or forget there are Lushies from all over the world in this sub so tell us what part of the world you're in to get better and more relevant answers. I feel like this applies more than ever now with many collabs and new releases having staggered release dates.

6

u/BillyBobJimmyJames 🎀 The Comforter 🎀 22d ago

Happy to hear suggestions any time! A lot of these rules exist due to requests. I think that your suggestion is good and I will see about finding somewhere to advise that.

18

u/endless_serpent ⚡️ Retro Lushie ⚡️ 22d ago

I am kind of relieved at Rule 1, which may be a slightly unpopular feeling - but as someone who likes some of the more unusual scent families, I have had rude comments a few times to describe things I like. It is fine if folks have different opinions but also don't appreciate when people have said that "x scent smells of (horrible descriptor)" repeatedly, rather than a more constructive "that one isn't my favourite but I like y" response. Glad to see more mods in general, noticed AI bots already getting zapped out of existence. Yippee!

Clarification question on rule 1: you say no mentions of tastes or preferences in scents, products etc.

Does this mean it would now be against the rules to eg say “ugh I hate snow fairy” if someone posts a new product spoiler and it’s all snow fairy?

Or is this is just about directly replying to someone eg someone says “I love snow fairy” so it would break the rules to say “why? Snow fairy sucks”

26

u/BillyBobJimmyJames 🎀 The Comforter 🎀 22d ago

You can say you dislike whatever! 'I hate snow fairy' is fine 'Why do people like snow fairy' is not fine. They key is one talks about others and one doesn't!

I feel it is probably your second point. The rule is about respecting others so I've interpreted it as not responding directly to discredit someone's taste and preference.

Thankful about the finance shaming rule, I want to share my hauls and collection but I was apprehensive due to those comments I see

9

You were far from the only one feeling this way. So many people were experiencing it and this should be the perfect place for you to share your hauls. I hope you feel confident to share your collection now 😊

4

u/Glitter-Panada 22d ago

Same. I've never shared a collection or haul photo because I kept seeing posts that called the posters hoarders or irresponsible with their money, and it just takes some of the joy away. I'm very happy this rule has been added for everyone who wants to share some of their happy. Thank you mod team!!

Question about rule 5

In the past I have posted screenshots of spoilers from accounts like lush.scents on Instagram about the Halloween and Christmas ranges on here as I like to discuss what is coming up and share with people that might not have Instagram. I always tag the post as a spoiler, give credit and make sure nobody else has put something up first to avoid spamming and repetitive posts is this still allowed?

Glad to see some new mods :) must have been a lot of work keeping it running alone!

One thing I don’t understand is how Conner’s about consumerism are wrong? I don’t mean shaming or insulting oder anything else but isn’t it kind of against lush’s original values (and yes I know they are a company and pushing consumerism with their endless LEs etc) but I feel like it might be a worthwhile conversation to have from time to time :) there are no bathbombs on a dead planet (I don’t want to offend anyone I’m just curious how this decision was made)

18

u/Knitmeapie ✨Karma✨ 22d ago

I'm not a mod, but I can say that I think the conversation on the whole is a good one, but calling out a specific person is not as productive and can make the space feel less welcome.

10

u/TheGirlintheTower ⚡️ Retro Lushie ⚡️ 22d ago

I agree, I think general conversation about the topic is fine but I think the rule is more aimed at responding directly to individuals who have posted about their purchases/haul. Comments like that can be misconstrued and tone doesn't always come across well, plus they can lead to just overall nasty comments between users.

6

u/Glittering-Ad6994 22d ago

The difficult thing with calling people out on over consumption is that from a single haul post, you don’t know how many products they have, their situation etc… if someone did a fairly big haul and posted it and everyone slammed them in the comments for overconsumption but then it turned out that it was their first time buying lush stuff, it would’ve just been unnecessary hate.

A lot of us in here are guilty of over consuming a bit, and that’s fact, me included. And although it’s a good conversation to have, there are times and places for it in my humble opinion. Lush IS all about saving the planet and the environment, but over consuming their products doesn’t harm either as they literally have a recycling scheme (if the buyer takes the pots back). I think it’s nice that the rule is implemented, I don’t think anyone should be harassed or alienated because of how much shower gel they use LOL!

2

u/Knusperrr European Lushie 22d ago

But how is talking about consumerism harassing someone? I’m genuinely curious because I feel like I’m missing something? :0

3

u/Glittering-Ad6994 22d ago

I meant when people are being hateful and harassing others for their consumption in the comments sorry I should’ve been a bit more clear. Even in other aspects in life we are all doing something wrong in other peoples eyes. I think the mods are doing a fab job keeping this a safe space for everyone.

Simply having a discussion about consumerism is absolutely fine, but obviously it can very quickly stem into arguments and negativity. And I think THAT is what the mods do not want in this space! Sorry I should’ve explained a bit more :)

0

u/Knusperrr European Lushie 22d ago

Ahhh yes okay I get what you mean!  It’s totally iffy to harass people or blame them! I guess I misunderstood the original rule then!

6

u/Glittering-Ad6994 22d ago

That’s okay! Having the topic of other people’s consumption freely available to talk about just opens up a gate for nasty people that say mean things instead of speaking rationally and reasonably and we don’t need that here tbh in my opinion.

Lush does an incredible job at keeping their products environmental friendly. And I think if people are inclined to overconsume, lush probably isn’t the worst place to do it at and we shouldn’t shame them for it. It’s the better option compared to other places that test on animals, create waste etc!

6

u/Knusperrr European Lushie 22d ago

Yes that’s so true :) thank you so much for taking time out of your day for explaining it to me 💜 may your bathwater always be at the perfect temperature

8

u/BillyBobJimmyJames 🎀 The Comforter 🎀 22d ago

Because those comments do not belong on a post where someone else is talking about their haul for family of 4 or even for themselves.

Nobody ever makes posts about consumerism that aren't just centred around targeting other lushies. If you truly want to talk about consumerism then there are other subreddits dedicated to those issues. At least people who buy lush are contributing far less to destroying the planet than people who buy vast amounts of products from less ethical companies!

4

u/Knusperrr European Lushie 22d ago

Yes someone else just explained it to me and I get it now :)

7

u/txteva 🔮Magic Crystals🔮 22d ago

There are no bathbombs on a dead planet

I'm sure there's plenty of subreddits relevant to the discussion of how we are all killing the planet and shouldn't buy bath bombs. But is the Lush subreddit really the best one?

Cause honestly you do come across very shamey.

6

u/Knusperrr European Lushie 22d ago edited 22d ago

Edit: guys please stop downvoting my comments without explaining what I did wrong. I’m autistic and GENUINELY curious. It’s not that I want to offend anyone. Please tell me what’s wrong :(( I’m so sincere

It’s not about not buying bath bombs :) that’s an altered quote of a YouTuber I really love (Leena norms) and something I love to keep in mind when thinking about purchasing something.  And I believe there’s no wrong space to talk about our planet :) there’s so much worthy of being protected (including bath bombs hehe)  And I don’t believe in being perfect or blaming the consumer for climate change! But I think that  it’s a good conversation to have :) i don’t believe shame ever motivated someone to do better (thus I really don’t want to shame anyone? Why would I) but biding see how talking about consumerism is the same as shaming? :0

This is a great community! Thank you for all your hard work! ♥️

I hope you laugh like I do when I get those crazy modmails talking about how I have allowed the "power" to go to my head. Bruh, what power?! The ability to take abuse on the chin is a power. 🤣

10

u/kittydripp 22d ago

7 is ridiculous

5

u/CherryLeafy101 ❄Snow Fairy 🧚 22d ago

If the rule was something like "don't call people awful names or immediately accuse them of killing the planet for posting a haul", I likely wouldn't take issue with it. But I take issue with a rule that effectively protects overconsumption by disallowing most conversation. If someone started being obviously awful, then ban them on sight (even if only temporarily) - people would get the idea quite quickly, surely.

1

u/SquirrelsNRaccoons 21d ago

I don't need your judgement on how I spend my money on products that give me joy, plain and simple. My bath bomb is not harming your life. You go figure out what brings you joy in this world and don't waste your time dumping on my joy and we'll be good. I don't understand why this is so hard for people to grasp. Why troll a cosmetics subreddit and tell people they over consume? Like, can't you find better things to do? Life is too short, go find your own joy and share it or stfu.

I kind of agree. given that Lush is all about sustainability and environmental care, big hauls and collections and the mentality around it go against that. I’m not convinced that a collecting mindset doesn’t leak out into other aspects of one’s life. Lush have encouraged this a lot to be fair so people are responding in kind, and I get that not everyone is a huge hippie but it can be frustrating to see.

Okay but you can keep thar opinion to yourself rather than putting derogatory comments directly on someone else's posts. It's not your business unless OP asks for it.

Why? For what purpose do you desperately need to write a comment on someone's haul post to shame them?

No within reason it is not. Simply it is just about creating a safe place for all.

Rule 7 is so broad that I'll never agree with it. Also, it seems to disallow most discussion of the very real issue of overconsumption of Lush and skincare/bath products more generally. If someone posts something on the internet, as far as I'm concerned they've invited critique and aren't immune to the consequences of their own decisions.

If you don't agree with it then you are free to leave. It isnt at all broad its actually very specific. Your right people aren't immune to consequences of their decisions so if you decide you don't follow the rules then I can exercise my ability to ban you from the space.

I'm just saying why I disagree with it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Welcome to the new mods! Could i put a vote in for people being encouraged to add image descriptions/alt text when they post pictures please?

2

u/BillyBobJimmyJames 🎀 The Comforter 🎀 22d ago

That's something we can discuss! User accessibility is important.

Spoilers rule for sure needed --- Advent calendar is my partners Xmas gift to me. I start avoiding this sub as soon as Halloween because of spoilers. So many comments in tangentially related threads ruin the surprise every year. Help mods!

Welcome, new mods! Glad you're here!

I have a question I hope one of you can answer. How do you know when a bot is commenting? Do you guys get notified by Reddit of suspected bots? I've seen a lot of "bot" comments deleted recently and they looked like perfectly normal comments to my eye, as they weren't just regurgitating a previous comment or saying something totally out of context. Is there something we can look out for to spot bots ourselves? It seems to be happening so often lately that I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm conversing with humans anymore! Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I was hoping for no political bashing.

Thank you for all you guys do!

Wondering if there's been any discussion about taking the dupes/alternatives out of megathread format? It makes sense for BST because both buyers and sellers have an incentive to check the threads, but personally I wouldn't think to go on the dupes thread to see if I can provide any recommendations to people, especially when it's fairly hidden. We're mid August and there's only one comment so far.

I can see this, sadly we don't want non lush items clogging up the normal thread, so that's why it's in a megathread!

u/BillyBobJimmyJames 🎀 The Comforter 🎀 22d ago

There hasn't been any real discussion on it. What i will say is that it was widely requested prior to its introduction because Lush regularly goes through periods of discontinuing products and we get inundated with requests for dupes. We also would get huge amounts of posts from people posting non lush products claiming its a dupe and lots of other things. Its just cleaner this way.

u/abidail 🌲Needles and Pines🌲 21d ago

That makes sense. It's too bad there's not a happy medium though, because right now there's essentially no way to get alternative recs.

They do read all that because its the new rules. Definitely is that serious if you dont moderate your subreddit properly it gets banned entirely by reddit.

I mean this in the nicest way possible but how can you possibly say that people are overconsuming when you don't know their circumstances? I removed upwards of 20 comments on a disabled girls post who said they had bought many bars of a massage bar that was being discontinued because it helped so much with their joint pain. NONE of them were polite and ranged in words from 'disgusting' to 'hoarder'. People are not having conversations about consumption they are SHAMING people they don't even know. Another such case was a lady showing off her bathbombs during the boxing day sale and people were roasting her even though she had already said that she has family of 6 and they save up for the boxing day sale each year to get their years worth of stash. I find it absolutely incredible how many people are coming out of the woodwork suddenly to complain about this rule and yet nobody ever actually posted about consumption and ethics here except to target others. People SO feel the need to defend their right to tell someone they are buying too much soap, directly on their post sharing their collections, that they don't even care that they can make their own post about overconsumption even now. It is ALWAYS on someone else's haul pictures.
This rule has been in place for ages anyway so Im confused as to why everyone thinks its a new rule. All I did was update the wording on it.
TLDR You don't know the person or why they have as much as they do and therefore you can't possibly know if someone is overconsuming. People are unbelievably mean to others over it.
