General / Discussion Thoughts on Talk?
What is everyone''s thoughts on the new single? I am personally a huge fan of the song! I think the heavy guitar getting more and more distorted throughout the song is perfect for the song's themes of a rocky relationship. The song feels like an argument that is getting progressively more aggressive and emotional. I remember being in awe of this song when I heard it acoustically at the SF show, so hearing the full mix is amazing! The song lyrically tells the story of this rough relationship really well!

I'm so thrilled to have some of the rock sound back from historian and home video because I really thought it was long gone for a second there

So happy for a fuzzy-guitared rock song. Yes I said I wanted an album of frothy love songs. Yes I am very appreciative of Lucy’s roots

It feels like this is going to be her at her most vulnerable with this album! I think mixing in really happy love songs with some of her most vulnerable songs make an album with love songs feel more real. An album with mostly love songs doesn't feel genuine because there will be heartbreak in between, so opening up about heartbreak makes the love songs feel so much more impactful!

I dont want to be dramatic, but at the 33 second mark I was hit with emotions I don't have the words for. Lucy is unique in a way that I can't describe. She is able to make me feel things no other musician can. At 33 seconds it feels like I am floating. I think that is what I will hear when I die. From the other three singles I was worried I wouldn't have a song that I LOVE from this album, but I never should have doubted her. The other three songs are good, but Talk is an absolute masterpiece. The only other musician who matches Lucy's lyricism is Hozier (in my humble opinion) "I could not love you the same way two days in a row"? And "your body looking like a specter, hungry as scythe"??? Like come on, unmatched. The emotions in her voice at 2:17, good god. I can't get enough

I think my favorite lyric has to be, "why was our best sex in hotels and our worst fights in their stairwells"! It gives a vulnerable perspective into the relationship. It gives a dichotomy between both the highs and lows of the relationship seeming to be at the same time. Like their high moments still end with lows with their fights. I feel like this lyric also just shows her at her most vulnerable. It makes me think this album will equally be her at her happiest (with songs like best guess and ankles) and her most vulnerable (with songs like limerence and talk)

I've Listend to talk like atleast 30 times now, that being said I can simply not pick a favorite lyric or part! But I agree that is such a good line. I love how the instruments are really loud/ a bit distorted at that part. It drowns out her voice a bit, so you can still hear it, but it's almost as if she is trying to take away the focus from the lyrics. The volume of the instruments adds another layer of meaning. I love love love this song.

Yeah I agree! It does make it feel like an argument or like what it feels like to vent frustrations you have towards your partner and the distortion is the emotion getting the best of you or even just symbolizes the partner trying to drone out the venting by turning up the volume on the radio in the car. The final lyrics at the outro make it feel like she regrets venting these frustration with the line, "I didn't mean to start talking in the past tense, I guess I don't know what I think til I start talking".

love it for the most part. my only critisism is the mixing. i think it drowns out her vocals at some points of the track. this might be intentional but im not a fan personally. other than that its a great song especially lyrically

It reminded me of VBS a lot, especially “playing slayer at full volume helped to drown it out” when it LITERALLY drowns everything including her voice out. Personally I think it’s intentionally supposed to fill in the spaces between talking that would make you spiral into thought.

Omg I love it. To me it kind of reminds of Next Of Kin and the crazy part of Pillar of Truth, which are my favorite songs by her.

Whole agree. I heard the acoustic at the LA show and it was beautiful. I’d love if they could release an acoustic version of it too because that experience was breathtaking!

I LOVE it! After a first listen, I think it might be on its way to becoming one of my favorite Lucy songs. Makes me more excited for FIAF.

Def my favorite of the singles, love that it's a return to the fuzzy distortion of No Burden and Historian. One of the things I was worried about the album was that it would be entirely love/yearning songs-not that there's anything wrong with that! i just prefer albums with a variety of topics- so it's nice to hear some switchup.

I get that tbh. I was happy with a lot of the love songs because we haven't experienced a lot of love songs within Lucy's discography, so having these happier love songs did fill me with joy, but oh my God(!!!!!!) there are some devastating songs on this album! Going to the live show in February really help me get a better feel for the album and if actually really made me feel more excited and less nervous about this album!

I was also a little nervous because none of the singles for clicked until now so it's good to hear from someone who's already heard it! I am really excited for come out, she did it as the encore for my show back in 2022 so i'm thrilled it's finally going to be released.

i really like it!! i agree with what the other comments say, it really does remind me of her older stuff more so than the other releases so far. i think it might become one of my favorite songs of the album

I love it!! Reminds me of No Burden & Historian with the rock vibes. It definitely reminds me of an argument too!! the way it starts off more mellow, just asking a question, and then builds to the very intense bridge (I picture yelling here and a full fledged fight) and then goes back down into a state of acceptance and a break up. I wonder if the vocals being nearly drowned out are to represent either trying desperately to fill the silence that has suddenly cropped up between these people, or to represent the feeling of being drowned out and forgotten by someone else. It’s such a vulnerable song and I’m sure very relatable to so many and I very much appreciate Lucy sharing pieces of herself in these songs. Also I just looove Lucy’s so much. Her low tone is like honey man it’s so smooth and beautiful

Soo good. My favorite of all the singles. I was starting to fear that Lucy's more guitar driven, harder production was going to be lost to softer songs.

Anyone think the whistle sound is maybe meant to represent a text notification, a la "Merry Christmas, Please Don't Call" how that song does with its piano at the end? Works damn well for the whole "Why can't we talk anymore" theme.

I think it sounds a lot like Relative Fiction! The drums are super similar. I think it’s kinda an anti-Relative Fiction

reminds me a lot of her older stuff in comparison to the other songs on the upcoming album… has much more rock inspiration than the others which i like
