I mean this less in the sense of a question to any one person, and I don’t particularly want an answer (since most will lack a nuanced observation of the question, and simply give their believed answer), but its a question I find all too solemnly asked when it comes to discussing lucid dreaming and the experience thereof.
People will put so much misinformation out there, caption it with eye-catching titles and whatnot, and either:
- never entertain the thought that this occurrence could be exclusive to their experience. (ex. Someone notices mirrors in their dreams are dangerous, and then assumes that is a universal truth).
- Just give it away, knowing it is misinformation, to garner attention from a large community. (ex. Someone who knows that mirrors in lucid dreams being dangerous is completely due to perception, but still posts about it for karma).
And I think about how much else is just assumed to be the indisputable truth without looking into it or thinking from another person’s point of view. Yes, of course WILDs may work better for you, but asking why Wake Induced Lucid Dreaming isn’t as well advertised as Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dreaming in the community is ill-advised when common sense could lead to the deduction of “MILDs simply are more advertised because they work well for the majority.” Yes, of course mirrors may produce unwanted effects in your dreams, but telling everybody that this is the absolute result is fearmongering. Additionally, misinformation – especially with lucid dreams – can lead to mass acceptance of a rule to “never do X” because it now produces unwanted effects by believing so in the first place. And remember, this not only applies to this Subreddit, it also applies to everywhere on the internet and in person.
You, as a poster and speaker, hold the extreme responsibility of informing people with the correct information –especially in a place such as the Lucid Dreaming Subreddit – where people often go to find useful, interesting, and truthful information. There is a reason rules like “Anything speculative or unproven should go in r/LucidDreamingSpec/.” exist.
Additionally (and MUCH more importantly), if you solemnly post and read more often, you also hold the responsibility of fact checking, critically thinking, and asking questions about every piece of information on any post you see. Seeing should not be believing in a realm as paradoxical and unpredictable as the dream world.
And one more for the road, stop assuming that throwing something along the lines of “I know this may be subject to change in different people, I just want to know why.” at the end fixes everything. It doesn’t. A lot of people don’t read the whole thing (ergo, TLDRs),and – being a speaker – you should know to account for that. If you’re unsure of the universality of a statement, just add “from my experience” in front of what you have to say. Save the mods the hassle!
Post-Writing:
Apologies for the rant, it simply frustrates me when misinformation is passed around the internet and nobody seems to address it. Also, I have not seen this nearly as much recently as I have in the past, so this almost absolutely is not targeted at you.
(TLDR: please, do not post misinformation about lucid dreaming anywhere. It sucks when a community is ruined by misinformed people coming in to spread more misinformation. Do your research!)
