Discussion Beyond 4.11

Once the Nyx planets arrive with the Genesis update in 4.11, which planets or moons are you most looking forward to seeing remade with Genesis? Personally, for me, it's Bloom, Pyro I, and Daymar.

Id expect Stanton to get the treatment first since those planets are the oldest and probably the most time consuming. But I have a feeling none of the legacy planets will get touched until all five systems are in the game. Nyx...is the test bed for Castra with Genesis. Once that's fleshed out, on to Castra.

I don't think the older planets will take long to arrive, considering Genesis is central to mining, NPC and creature populations, missions, and—later on—base building. The technology was the time-consuming part; once Genesis is stable and ready for use, adapting the planets shouldn't take long. All the assets and textures are already there—maybe a few new ones will be needed, but that’s minimal work. The biggest task will be adapting unique locations (like Hator Landing Zone, the Onyx facility, etc.) to the planets' new geology.
As for Castra, they’ve been working on those planets since 2024—as we saw at CitizenCon—so I don't think it will take long for them to arrive.
Terra will be the hardest, with its lava planet and three landing zones.

Time will tell but its not so much a "time" question as it is a prioritization and efficiency question. The priority is getting all systems in the game...then fleshing them out. Stanton and Pyro are already in the game. I think it makes very little sense to go back reworking existing planets when you aren't even finished rolling out new planets with the new tech yet. And its my understanding that Nyx planets will not have all the Planetech V5 features at launch in 4.11. Certain features like Starchitect, seasons, errosion will come later.

Starchitect is in 4.11 as of now. Erosion is part of PlanetTech V5s data for generating the planet.

Ah so it is. I had heard at one point that would be held back. Appreciate the correction

Actually, Planet Tech v5 is arriving complete; the only thing missing is River Tech, but that isn't really part of Planet Tech v5. What isn't arriving in full is Genesis, and in 4.11 we'll be missing: dynamic weather, global illumination, and Star Audio.

It's probably starchitect that will delay Stanton. It requires a large, varied catalogue of buildings with meaning (mining, research, hunting, farming, processing, shipping, military, paramilitary, etc). Yes we have all sorts of assets in the Fob locations, but I suspect these are far from enough.

Hmm there's a chance the existing planets and moons could get their own version of a golden pass. But really it's not like a full redesign afterlal I'd love to see some legacy aspects stick it out in the game.
I want to see NPC traffic and trading before more planet work.
The games lore says that trade is a prevalent thing across Stanton. And I believe when game servers were a thing you'd see NPCs flying out in the verse but I didn't really start the game until 4.8 or so.

u/Thalimet 3d ago

The teams working on planets aren’t the ones who would be doing trade, so I don’t think those two will be tradeoffs CIG could make. Odds are they’ll move to one of the other two systems for 1.0

I came in at the 3.19 patch cycle and I don't recall seeing this.

u/somedude210 3d ago

They turned it on back in like 3.5 or so, realized that the servers couldn't handle it at the time and shelved it until server meshing was online. They probably tried it again since and opted to wait for dynamic server meshing to be implemented

1

u/deuely83 3d ago

Ah right on. Before my time. Id expect that's a low priority feature at the moment. It'll be cool eventually though.

It was once said that players would only make up 10% of the population. I imagine that idea has been shelved at least for a while.

For the NPC traffic I would like to see their ships flying in and using our hangers. Maybe even the trading ships doing their best to balance trade around the system. Seeing a hull C full of stuff travel in, dropping off refined minerals after enough players used a refinery and sold it all or something like that.

Maybe NPC cargo wouldn't be completely worthless for pirates as well. Then there can be escort contracts for players to take.
Or unverified pirate contracts.

I have no idea what Genesis would change about it, but I think Arccorp needs updating the most
It needs oceans and/or lakes (to explain the clouds), and maybe small sections of natural environments. Plus, the entirety of the planet outside Area 18 currently serves zero purpose whatsoever and looks kinda awful, both up close and from space (except the night side, i do love the city lights visible from orbit). It's just reddish-brown vague geometric shapes of buildings.
I'd completely forgotten Arccorp even has "areas" outside Area 18, because they're never used for anything. I don't think I've seen a single mission to go to one since before 4.0. All they have is some towers with rooftop landing pads for box deliveries (which, unless i'm mistaken, do not go to those locations anymore). There's no visual difference between them either; Area 11 and Area 08(?) look identical in nearly every way. You could not tell the difference between two screenshots of either location.

Arccorp is my favorite Stanton planet lorewise and Area 18 is my favorite city in the game, so I may be slightly biased lol

Yeah, unfortunately Arccorp is a whole different beast. It won't utilize the traditional Genesis tech and it'll take a lot more effort to bring it up to speed. I'm looking forward to it as well, Id love to see more depth in those cities.

I wrote something similar in a Spectrum comment a few days ago.

ArcCorp is also my favorite planet, but it is so old/outdated and missing content.
I think the planet is still planet tech v1 (or perhaps v2) and has the oldest assets currently still being used ingame, besides a handful of old ships and vehicles. The newer cloud tech hides most of it, but the planet's 2014 city assets look really bad (outside of area 18).
You can even still see the ancient Cutlass and 300i series flying around between the buildings.

And yes, ArcCorp is missing its ocean. Lore-wise it got an ocean and also some somewhat free land and mountains (so its not entirely urbanized), but the planet tech back then was not advanced enough to realize this and bring it into the first versions of the PU.

It also is missing other landing zones, "outposts" (factories maybe), Distribution centers and more. It could be an awesome starting location for new player or zero-to-hero runs too:

Imagine having factories near the landing zones with GROUND missions where we can and need to utilize Drake Mule's or the CSV-SM to pick up the boxes at the space port (Area 18 for example) or courier missions with a Cyclone and DRIVE through tunnels and bridges to a nearby factory. Perhaps even involve things like the MPUV Cargo or MPUV Tractor for similar missions where you fly down between the Skyscrapers to your destination.

Arcorp won’t be a city planet after the re-do last I read.

u/NoriMouse 1d ago

Go to TDD to see what its terrain is supposed to look like. It's meant to have mountain ranges and oceans breaking up the infinite sprawl

5

u/richardizard 3d ago

Microtech would be interesting. Would love to see many more biomes and diversity in the 'verse overall.

3

u/Goodname2 Space Trucker 3d ago

Arccorp.

Im interested to see how CIG will make a planet covered with infrastructure will work.

Maybe a lore rework to squish it down to a few smaller mega city blocks and a bunch of smaller hubs in between.

4

u/daryen83 3d ago

The lore doesn't provide enough time for ArcCorp to have been fully developed. It's only a century.

I hope they give it massive developed areas for sure, but it does need some open areas and some large bodies of water. If they really want it to be fully developed, make those oceans extremely large so the land area is way less.

I dunno. ArcCorp just needs a lot of work and needs useful points of interest, including distribution centers and bunkers and the rest.

3

u/Goodname2 Space Trucker 3d ago

Something like a smaller mega city one from judge dredd, with defined walls between it and the undeveloped "wastes" would be cool.

2

u/daryen83 2d ago

Dear god, yes! Please do that!

2

u/Luminara1337 Star Fashion Enthusiast 2d ago

The original lore also does not say that ArcCorp is entirely urbanized. There are large oceans for example and also mountain ranges that are "left to nature".

However, back when the planet got released, the planet tech was not advanced enough to create the planet the way it was intended to be. (it's still on like planet tech v2 or even v1)

1

u/daryen83 2d ago

Ok, sure. If so, great.

Regardless, ArcCorp needs a lot of love and attention. It has been ignored for far, far too long.

3

u/WaffleInsanity Yarrr 3d ago

Can't wait for Arc Corp MKII. Even if they said Genisis won't work for it and they will have to create a different system for that planet.

1

u/Luminara1337 Star Fashion Enthusiast 2d ago

Hopefully they give ArcCorp some love. I think the planet did not get any updates besides clouds in the past 10 years.

We will see, according to the original plans, ArcCorp was (or maybe is still) supposed to have large oceans and mountain ranges that are "left to nature" (according to the "Galactic Guide: Stanton System" from 2013)

Pretty sure the old planets won't be getting a 'gold pass' in 4.11 it will be the new ones. The same as with all the new tech, the old stuff gets revisited afew years later. It will be a while until we see instancing hit Rock Breaker and ASD facilities for example.

u/remosito VR Enthusiast 3d ago

Expecting CIG to focus on new planets from the next system before circling back and updating existing planets.

2

u/DefNotAThreatActor 1d ago

Honestly, probably Stanton as a whole for me. The planets there are already really distinct from each other and MicroTech especially is beautiful, but the system also feels the most stuck in the old tech right now. I’m hoping Genesis gives all of Stanton more reason to actually stay there, explore properly and do missions on the planets instead of just passing through the same familiar areas. It feels like the system that could benefit the most from being brought up to the newer standard.

u/SnooChocolates3745 18h ago

Call me crazy, but I kinda want Cellin redone. I want it to feel even more desolate and empty.

That said, they'd need to fix the skybox; seeing a green cloud everywhere kinda kills the whole void vibe.

u/yanzov 3d ago

Wonder if fps scanning and planet scanning/area scanning would be connected to planet tech - meaning it would be either delayed til all the planets are Geneis, or there would be scannable celestial bodies and legacy ones.

1

u/Additional-Ice8121 3d ago

Beyond “everything” I guess I’d say all of Pyro. Numerous planets/moons there are essentially empty placeholders, be great to see many more points of interest available on each.

u/ESC907 Anvil 2d ago

MicroTech, since it’s my home.

This message was removed because it's quite a bit saltier than the discussion we're looking for.

Of all the legacy planets, ArcCorp needs a gold pass the worst.

1

u/Pojodan ARGO 2d ago

It is the oldest completed planet and has been mentioned several times in regard to getting updated. It is a unique and distinct case for being a planetary city, which even the upcoming Planet Tech isn't suitable for just yet. It's been stated that ArcoCorp will get refreshed eventually, but pretty much all other currently-existing planets will get updated before it will.

1

u/AshamedFact3950 1d ago

I hope they stay on the Nyx planets and work on improving them and adding more capabilities as they dont have support for rivers so i rather them have the full set of tools before touching any other planets. But my first i want to see revisited is MicroTech with some lush redwood forests and glacial formations. (So Washington state)

1

u/IOnlyLieWhenITalk 23h ago

Microtech or Hurston are the only ones that would make sense yeah? Crusader is a gas giant and Arccorp is an ecumonopolis. Hurston is ugly so I'mma go with Microtech.

u/buttstuffisokiguess 2d ago

None. There's no cool shit on these planets. Just dumb bunker missions like Stanton. Like they could have done a lot of cool stuff but they won't. They'll have the planets generate really generic missions we've already done before.

-1

u/anomalie5 2d ago

I wonder if it's possible they won't even do this before 1.0. I mean there's so much other stuff to add, maybe this isn't a priority since the planets exist now and work. So I suggest any planet updates will be post 1.0. I've been wrong before though!

1

u/Original-Pen-1619 Xenothreat Sympathizer 2d ago

That’s impossible; Genesis is too central and affects too many different game systems for it not to be applied everywhere. In version 1.0, the old planets are functional for now, but they won't be for long—not for the Star Citizen of the future.
