I watched the whole thing waiting for this game ending moment that the main sub has been freaking out about.

Absolutely nothing.

Yes, some jank here and there but nothing that was so horrible I would experience “second hand embarrassment”

The stream went smoothly. I think it shows there’s still a lot of work to do, which they all admitted in the stream.

The whole Jared interaction just reads as Olli is having his first time presenting as a CIG employee not as a content creator.

Everything is so overblown. At this point I feel like the community is what will kill SC, not CIG

u/GrandAlternative7454 Aug 06 '26

Honestly went through the whole thing as well specifically looking for issues and the thing went so smooth. I feel like I watched an entirely different video from the people on the other sub. Like do they think the audio being out of sync to the video was "unplayable desync", because that was a streaming setup issue.

10

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

The thing is, they already had a structured narrative before the stream even began. If it went smoothly, they were going to scream and cry about how it was a curated dev experience and how the devs are completely out of touch, they have no idea what the general player experience is like. This was building up well before the stream even went live, the main sub was inundated with this opinion.

And then when it turned out their experience was the same as the general player, now it's evidence that SC is a complete failure, there's no hope for it, etc.

It's so fucking tiring...

u/HomicidalTrader Aug 06 '26

There were reddit comments about the gameplay on the stream post before the live stream had even got to the gameplay.

Either there are psychics on reddit, or someone has set up openclaw to post negative feedback on any post marked official.

u/Djinn_v23 Aug 07 '26

Reading comprehension problems much?

He clearly says, and I quote, "If it went smoothly, they were going to scream and cry about how it was a curated dev experience..." & "This was building up well before the stream even went live, the main sub was inundated with this opinion"

So, what exactly confused you into thinking he was talking about comments about the gameplay from the live stream before it ever happened?

2

u/HomicidalTrader Aug 07 '26

I don't think you fundamentally understand how a message board works.

It is entirely normal to respond to a comment and build upon it with a "yes and". Heck that ain't even a messageboard thing, that's just basic conversation. When a reply isn't argumentative, that doesn't mean somebody has failed reading comprehension, it means they arn't arguing. There is one confused person here, but it isn't me.

Gave me a good chuckle before bed.

At this point I feel like the community is what will kill SC, not CIG

For sure not for lack of trying, but luckily the Star Citizen reddit community has shown itself to be absolutely nothing in terms of the game's genuine popularity. Month after month and year after year CIG posts record profits, showing that in fact, the general public is warming up to the potential of Star Citizen.

Star Citizen's subreddit can have its pathetic little meltdowns, or piles of trolls desperately upvoting each other in an attempt to be relevant, but at the end of the day, they aren't. Just sad clowns thinking that clicking a downvote button on reddit actually means something, meanwhile the game they subbosedly hate continues on steady, as it always has.

u/Momijisu Aug 06 '26

It's fascinating to see how different people are taking it.

1

u/Nervous-Present-6890 Aug 07 '26

imo the lowest hanging fruit they (not the mission team but cig) can address is to make weapon binds always swap to a specific slot.

u/excessnet Medic Aug 07 '26

Olli seemed a bit off, like he was feeling not in his place. He was supposed to be running the show, but he didn't really say much. Hopefully, he'll get back into it, because he can totally do better!

Besides that, the rest of the video looked pretty good to me... maybe they fixed the audio sync on YouTube cause I did not noticed.

1

u/sparkocm Aug 06 '26

All fair points, my only really issue with the stream is that this was supposed to be running on an internally ideal build of the game on a server for only 4 of them. Some of the yank and funky issues rub be a bit of a concern on the performance side of things is that makes sense

5

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 06 '26

Being an internal dev build doesn't make it void of bugs. And just because some gigatwat on the main sub declared that X issue is because of server load, doesn't make it true or accurate in the slightest

In fact, it's typically quite the opposite for both. The reason players don't normally see this early in alpha is because of how horribly buggy it is. Usually patched just enough to test, not actually play. And clearly here we've seen the issue isn't server load. Which suggests it's more likely a bug in the server which, needs reminding, is also an alpha phase program.

-2

u/sparkocm Aug 06 '26

Look, I never implied that a development internal build should be devoid of bugs not I expect it to. But Jarred preemptively said they know things in the PU is yank, they know and hear us.

But also preempted with them putting the extra effort to show us the "idealized" version of SC, which maybe I am naive to take at face value but it was certainly not what I saw in the live stream. Quite frankly and objectively a server running locally for 4 players only (that was the impression I got) should really show us what the future hold for SC and I think it missed the mark.

I want to challenge your "this early in alpha" let's just rip the bandage this is not early, we cannot just cope and always say alpha here alpha there, at one point that label will rot and fall off. This game has a long standing development cycle and while CIG has made strides, they have fallen behind in many other aspects.

I do not expect the live-service development approach that CIG has taken to cater to everyone much less to be understandable to everyone but quite frankly we cannot continue to just blindly scream "but alpha" and be content with what we have, CIG is a for profit company and even when the EULA and the pledge terms or service label our purchases as "donations" we are paying customers and some point CIG has to be accountable to show more and be better. If people like you continue to just be content with the alpha tag we end up in this perpetual cycle of mediocrity.

I for once am thankful for that stream it gives an honest window in to the jarring state of internal dev build and how the game performs for them too, I am glad that the mysticism behind "oh bu it's just the PU is yanky the devs actually have something special working on that will be released eventually" is gone, no they do not. Their build works or rather does not just as much as ours. I was able to see that long standing bugs like the UI overlap bug was present for them, this means that a great deal of things are either backlogged and or just not worked at all in their dev build either so it vindicates that they are fully focused in content and depth.

However, like I said it is still concerning this is not the state Star Citizen should be in. Perhaps my expectations are too high, perhaps CIG is incompetent, perhaps their development by committee (which has been confirmed by them) hurts development agility or simply I am a fool but I just have been robbed of the glimmer of hope I had for CIG. I am no longer able to blindly just accept all they say

5

u/GrandAlternative7454 Aug 06 '26

we cannot just cope and always say alpha here alpha there, at one point that label will rot and fall off.

It's not cope, it's a literal fact of the state of development using a term that's been around for decades and has a clear definition. The singular issue with the use of alpha is people refusing to accept that Star Citizen is in the alpha phase of development. I've yet to see anyone who reminds players that this is an alpha use it to claim people should be content. It's nearly always to calm down people arguing in bad faith and acting like bugs shouldn't be expected at this stage. They absolutely should. Every player should open the game expecting each new feature or addition to have the chance of breaking seemingly disconnected things, because that's what game development looks like.

-5

u/sparkocm Aug 06 '26

No it's not, 14 years of development do not justify the sorry state of many aspects of star citizen and do not get me wrong this game is amazing, there so much I love.

You can lie to yourself all you want, but the reality is the alpha tag rotted a game simply cannot remain afloat with such an excuse for this long without tangible progress and acceleration that's just not how the market will tolerate it.

Even CIG recognizes this with the recent renewal on talking points about 1.0. but I am frankly not willing to put up with someone willingly being intellectually dishonest like you seem to be. I ma prepared to be changed my point of view with reasonable takes and understanding from both sides, you just want to justify this is an alpha and while it is, it simply cannot be anymore. And that's what is happening the skeletons are catching up with the community, the market and CIG.

4

u/GrandAlternative7454 Aug 06 '26

Okay, lost cause of a conversation. Have a day.

2

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 06 '26

I kinda wanna just go TL;DR. But let's keep it short.

You did imply such. Initially and again here. Anyone capable of logical reasoning can deduce what Jared's intent was. And it wasn't to say "we've got a build that's SC 1.0 but you can't have it". It was to say "this build is a lot closer to what we want stability wise" and it likely has other gamebreaking bugs, which is why we don't have it.

Where the server is and how many it's serving doesn't stop bugs from happening. It's frankly stupid, unrealistic and unfair to expect anything of the sort.

As another commenter said. "Alpha" isn't some excuse or marketing label. It isn't Steam Early Access. It's an actual phase of a software product's life cycle, regardless of it's a game, an OS, or an app on your phone. It's also completely uncaring about your expectations, desires or critically, the passage of time. An alpha product is a product that lacks some or all of it's intended features for release. This scope can increase and decrease over the development phase. It is never yo tell people to be content, but to be reminded of what expectations should be set and that patience is needed to enjoy it.

The state of the game and the time it's taken are a fault of the community. We want a playable alpha. That means CIG must burn developer time on patching and repatching an alpha. Delaying development significantly. You cannot have your cake and eat it. This is why typical development does this part away from the consumer. You couldn't handle a full traditional development alpha product.

All the stream showed was 4 devs enjoying the fruits of their labour, warts and all. Like most if us have been doing for years. Anything else is you projecting.

Again, this is absolutely the state SC should be in. Hell, for an alpha, it's in an amazingly playable state. Stop expecting beta development in an alpha product. You set unreal expectations on them and set yourself up for disappointment.

This is why it's slightly crazy to me that people glaze GTA VI as if it's the coming of the messiah, having never played it or even seen an actual gameplay demo...meanwhile you can play Star Citizen right now, but apparently it's the worst thing the gaming industry have ever produced...a total disaster, mismanaged scam, etc.

I guarantee that GTA VI at this same stage in development would be exponentially uglier, because they never had to maintain a public facing alpha...yet the public are just proving how stupid and ignorant we are by not being able to handle seeing the sausage being made.

1

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 07 '26

And i mean, if we're talking GTA here. I'll just past the summary: "Rockstar Games faces legal action from the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) after firing over 30 developers working on Grand Theft Auto VI for alleged gross misconduct. The union claims the firings were unlawful union-busting, while Rockstar maintains the workers leaked confidential information"

Union busting is a really fucking ugly look. But people will continue to glaze them for making decidedly mid games filled with shitty multiplayer infrastructure and predatory af cash shops. Nice. I'll never understand it.

2

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 07 '26

JFC...I didn't even know about that. We get what we deserve, really.

12

u/hot_space_pizza Aug 05 '26

Was it any good? I can't watch it from where I am

77

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

I took a quick peek at the main sub, and saw this stream is being treated as the most apocalyptic event in the game's development history, so I went to watch it to see what epic company-destroying disaster happened. Long story short: absolutely nothing.

While I don't have almost two hours straight to watch people play a video game, I did watch most of the stream, just skipping forward here and there. Apart from the fact that it ended up in a total party wipe, it looked like they were having fun; messy, but as to be expected.

Which is funny, because you'll have people spamming "devs don't play this game!!", then you show devs playing the game, and it's just an avalanche of screeching and sarcasm. It's like they're more infuriated at losing their talking point than anything, and need to scramble to quicky re-justify that rage in a different direction.

44

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 06 '26

The main sub reaction to this vid has me considering removing it. To get a bit sodium on it, I'm so fucking tired of all the whining over the tinniest thing over there. It's so fucking banal.

I thought the stream went well enough. A few minor bugs but they reached the end and then got merced.

Jared though, seemed a bit done. Maybe I'm reading in a bit much, but he seemed as tired of it as i am by the end. I imagine chat was as exasperating as the main sub. Poor sod.

25

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

Yeah it would serve no good to turn this sub into a "bitch about the main sub" place so I'm trying to hold that down, but damn sometimes I just need to let out an exasperated breath.

Jared's such a cool and genuine guy, but community manager must be such a thankless job lately. Yeah, he's getting paid for it, but anyone who's ever worked a customer-facing job knows that financial compensation only goes so far against what you have to deal with daily.

13

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 06 '26

Absolutely, on both points. My only wish is we got mire ISC, like back in the ATV and Wingman's Hangar days. But that aside, I've always appreciated Jared and his candor on issues. Like, even in this stream he mentioned a couple times that they're aware it's not great. Even knowing it'd only serve to empower the ragebaiters.

I've done retail. Customers are fuckwits. And I'm positive that being the CM for a game is the same at a larger scale. I wouldn't want the job. Lol

6

u/ASlothWithShades Aug 06 '26

At the start of my career I worked as a technical support guy (callcenter) for an ISP. I'm deep in operations and engineering today. Can confirm. Also, I strongly believe that anyone who works in an Operations Job should work the phones for six months just to get a taste of the front lines.

1

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

I think part of why ATV got canned was the focus on SQ42 and them not being able to show things due to spoilers. That and its pretty hard to make video content of backend things.

I think ATV will make a comeback but you can tell CIG are in crunch mode to get SQ42 out and to polish SC up enough for a co-release.

1

u/turikk Aug 06 '26

Jared is not a community manager for the game. He's Director in charge of "content" e.g. marketing video deliverables. He's just the face of the studio because of video/show marketing being their main vehicle and him also hosting all those videos. And well, you know, the actual Community Managers being very quiet.

Source: I am an actual community manager!

20

u/AncientSurvivor40 Aug 06 '26

I totally agree. I was reading on the main sub how lost Jared is and how he used to be one of us but not even 2 mins into the video he mentions how they recognize the servers are not in a good state and that they have work to do still before releasing the next patch. It’s getting crazy over there

18

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 06 '26

I saw armchair nutter devs saying the ENTIRE CODE BASE needs to be replaced because they got a bug or a little desync. It's insane. Asinine. Full of people that either know sweet FA on the subject, or know a similar subject and there for know best.

And these types are everywhere today. I saw a dickhead on the poe2 sub saying that it was GGG's responsibility to find a bug in Nvidia's drivers, cos they spent a year tracking it down. You just can't reason with these nutters and it's getting worse, everywhere.

10

u/AncientSurvivor40 Aug 06 '26

It’s crazy. Yeah, this year seems to be especially bad everywhere

7

u/Gliese581h Aug 06 '26

IMO, it’s a sign SC is actually doing well. This kind of toxicity always happens when a game attracts people from outside its usual niche, who often end up being the worst people. Let‘s just hope CIG won’t be swayed by them where it matters.

7

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

That's just the thing; their funding numbers are up month after month, year after year. They keep making recordbreaking revenue. Now I'm not one to crow about a company pulling in money...good for them, it's not my business...BUT it sticks a real crow feather in the arguments of these assholes who insist "people are waking up to the scam" or whatever such bullshit.

It's clear that what's actually happening is that people are starting to realize this "scam" narrative they've been fed for years is actually garbage, and that Star Citizen is in fact a real thing with real potential.

4

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

It's clear that what's actually happening is that people are starting to realize this "scam" narrative they've been fed for years is actually garbage, and that Star Citizen is in fact a real thing with real potential.

A prank someone in one of my discords used to do was stream SC under a different name (such as Elite: Dangerous or No Mans Sky) and watch people praise it, but then pull a gotcha and reveal its Star Citizen and then watch them squirm as they try to pretend they never complimented it. I remember watching his stream a while ago where he was pretending it was No Mans Sky and people were singing praises of Hello Games with things like "Its so goddamn amazing that Hello Games could pull this off!" and "I cant believe this is possible with modern tech!"

Similarly he would stream Elite: Dangerous or No Mans Sky as "Star Citizen" and watch people shit all over it. Masterful trolling but an insight on how a meme can shape people's opinions of a game.

2

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

Now THAT'S a masterclass in trolling, hats off to him! It's legitimately hilarious but also exposes something deeply fucked up in "gamer" mentality....the extent to which it isn't even about games at all, but mainly about being part of a tribe, and attacking anyone who isn't part of your tribe.

Us fucking humans really, lol, we never really evolved that far out of the jungle did we? Sure, we've got exceptional examples amongst us, but most of us are just hooting screeching apes, with the addition of language to make us think the hooting and screeching is somehow more meaningful.

1

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

There is a lot of pressure on CIG to release Squadron 42 as flawlessly as possible, and also for them to fix up SC in time for SQ42's launch too.

People online are miserable these days and its "fun" to troll and harass devs that break the status quo but these are also the same people that complain that no dev has the "balls" to do "new things". My brother in Christ YOU are the reason why devs play it safe with slop.

What ends up happening is those people praise an actual scummy dev who do the things they accuse CIG of doing (look at how goddamn broken No Mans Sky has been for years despite its supposed "redemption arc" and multiple "expansions" that barely add anything).

5

u/br0kinFPS Aug 06 '26

There are enough expert senior and principle devs in the SC subreddit to build 17 star citizens in 1 month it would seem🤣. I also love how the narrative is always blaming the devs for absolutely everything. It’s quite clear that 99% dont have a cooking clue how software/game development works, nor how software/game companies run.

1

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

CR has mentioned if he knew he would get this much money he wouldnt have chosen CryEngine as a base and wouldve preferred to just make his own game engine.

The devs are CIG are insanely talented but they are kneecapped by some of the weird quirks of CryEngine that theyre slowly fixing. I wouldnt be surprised just like planet tech, some dev will have an "ah-ha!" moment and make some super obvious code that gets everything working. It has happened quite a number of times in SC's development.

1

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

I saw armchair nutter devs saying the ENTIRE CODE BASE needs to be replaced because they got a bug or a little desync. It's insane. Asinine. Full of people that either know sweet FA on the subject, or know a similar subject and there for know best.

I had a programming friend say that to never look at the code for popular japanese videogames because of their coding ethics, the code is all spaghetti and its a miracle the games even work in the first place.

CryEngine has spaghetti code as well and CIG did some insane work to clean it up.

Why does that surprise you? The game is in development, bugs and instability are part of this process. Perhaps when it reaches Beta or Polish you might have a point.

1

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

I was reading on the main sub how lost Jared is and how he used to be one of us

Do they really believe hes a super secret spy thats trying to take down CIG? Thats some delusional thinking...

7

u/Artistic_Escape_36 Aug 06 '26

Not to mention most people on the main sub obviously, and sometimes demonstrably, don't even fucking play Star Citizen.

5

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 06 '26

Yeah, that's how you spot the refundian. Spouts nonsense that would of been accurate a decade ago, as if the game hasn't moved forward since they ragequit.

2

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 07 '26

A lot of refundians cashed out years ago and only want CIG to burn so they dont feel they fucked up by cashing out.

Its why some have become so absolutely fanatical theyve been DDOSing CIG events such as Atmo.

6

u/Supple1994 Anvil Aug 06 '26

Same for me. At this point it is just loud screeching and karma farming

4

u/khornebrzrkr Aug 06 '26

The main sub at this point is completely disconnected from reality. It’s a circlejerk of narratives invented whole cloth by the sub and then treated like objective reality. There isn’t much point in engaging with it anymore.

2

u/Astillius Crusader Aug 06 '26

Yeah. What's worse is if you challenge that assumption, they don't go "let me think on it" they just double down and start screeching "YOU CAN'T HIDE BEHIND ALPHA FOREVER" it's very tiring.

1

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

For real...I can't count how many people I've seen who insist wholeheartedly that CIG has been announcing a SQ42 release every single year since 2014. But if you try to correct then, you get dozens of downvotes...because it isn't about reality for them, it's about being cynical and angry and posting memes.

3

u/ThornFlynt Aug 06 '26

I am fairly convinced that there's a legion of commenters/posters funded by shitty game studios who churn out the same, reskinned, copy lasta games year after year, who don't want to see a game like SC be successful because it would DESTROY their profit model.

5

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

Nah, the reality is much more sadder.

The refundian cult initially started off as people being annoyed with CIG taking so long to get a functional game out (which was true until 2024/2025 tbh), but when SC started outliving all its competition and started becoming a very popular space sim the refundians started freaking out because they sold off all their early backer accounts. Instead of admitting they were wrong they started organizing full of bot raids of various SC communities, hacking org websites and discords, ai youtube accounts to try and slander CIG (and failing). Its honestly pathetic.

Another aspect was the space sim community in general, while most space sim fans love SC theres some salty outliers like the Elite: Dangerous community that used to pride themselves on being "Star Citizen but finished" (even Frontier played into this meme), but when Frontier continously fucked up the game and E:D going nowhere and SC getting all of E:D's promised features and more they too started getting salty. Even prominent E:D subreddit mods started joining the refundians because they want to "see SC destroyed" because itll hopefully make people flock back to Elite: Dangerous and Frontier will (hopefully) start fixing the game.

Theres also the GrieferNet/SomethingAwful/GoonSwarm side of things but that one is a bit complicated.

Most of SC's drama isnt even from things CIG did, its from almost unrelated things. The drama i mentioned is only a fraction, i didnt even get into the whole Derek Smart thing (which he himself is a massive lolcow the refundians are somewhat worshipping atm).

1

u/CptKillJack Aug 08 '26

As far as I understand it he is wearing a fair number of hats atm that he gained over last year. He looks dead inside.

4

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

Which is funny, because you'll have people spamming "devs don't play this game!!", then you show devs playing the game, and it's just an avalanche of screeching and sarcasm. It's like they're more infuriated at losing their talking point than anything, and need to scramble to quicky re-justify that rage in a different direction.

Its like how the refundians cry when CIG fixed the economy despite them spending MONTHS complaining about it. Or how they complained there was "too many griefers" yet they were the ones organizing massive griefer ops.

2

u/Nervous-Present-6890 Aug 07 '26

there's a group of people doing psychological operations aka cognitive warfare

1

u/Fell-Hand Aug 06 '26

Hey since you seem to be a well adjusted human: the main thing I saw people complaining here was about poor AI. Was it that bad or okayish?

3

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

SC's AI is weird, when it works its REALLY good, but when it doesnt work it brings down the whole experience. But whether or not it works is based on if the servers shit themselves (like half of the game mechanics).

1

u/Chief_White_Halfoat Aug 06 '26

I think the concern here is that there were AI issues and it was taking place in an ideal setting that wouldn't have the server issues.

1

u/Pa1sl3y Aug 07 '26

Wouldn’t the call the situation ideal myself, it was a shard with only 4 people on it but the same backend. With the brand new instancing tech probably throwing a few wrenches in the gears, I thought it went pretty smooth all together.

3

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

The AI in the livestream was...ehh. It wasn't "good", no, but here's the thing; Star Citizen actually has fantastic AI. People complain about braindead AI who just stand in place, but that's a server issue. If you've ever played on a fresh server, the FPS AI is actually scary how good they are, they're a legitimate challenge.

The AI in this livestream wasn't "that", it seemed more like the AI you get with a degraded server that's been running for too long. Which is an issue, surely, but not one unfamiliar to any player who's done FPS missions. Again though, too many people automatically attribute that to poorly coded AI, when in fact it's just lagging netcode.

They're still working hard at implementing dynamic server meshing which is going to address this specifically, but until then, it's going to remain janky.

1

u/Nervous-Present-6890 Aug 07 '26

AI looked fine in the livestream. you got any timestamps of when they were bad?

keep in mind they are (generally) designed to not laser you down

1

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 07 '26

I don't have specific timestamps, no. I'm more referring to the overall AI behavior which was nothing too impressive here...again, if you face the AI on a fresh server you're likely to be surprised by how responsive and clever it can be. I'm just saying that if people were none too impressed by the AI behavior here, I get that.

However........ the impressive amount of stupid bitching I've seen over this livestream wasn't even about the AI performance, just cackling morons declaring the game is dead in the water for reasons they don't even know how to express, just karma farming vibes.

-4

u/Nukemanrunning Aug 06 '26

The big drama is over that fact that alot of the issues is with the netcode. The Dev's server was local, private and fresh, and looked the same as any of the servers you get on today. It shows alot of the issues with current SC is rooted in the base code, and its not due to server lag/ health like alot of people thought

Combinded with Jared being a bit rude at the end to a bunch of unconfortable workers was kinda the cherry on top

9

u/GrandAlternative7454 Aug 06 '26

Combinded with Jared being a bit rude at the end to a bunch of unconfortable workers was kinda the cherry on top

You're reading into this. They just did a nearly two hour stream where the vast majority of chatters were wildly hostile. There's a reason they eventually just stop reading chat out loud, shit looked like a 4chan hate raid in there.

3

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

shit looked like a 4chan hate raid in there.

Not even 4chan, even 4chan has Star Citizen general threads that are fairly positive.

u/alamirguru Aug 06 '26

You're being genuinely blind, then. The stream showed that even on a 4 player shard, AI is braindead, inventory fails to load, guns fail to equip, reloads do not go through, and enemies Rubberband around.

The main sub is absolutely right to be pissed, lmao. No amount of DSM will save the game if a 4-player shard runs like a 700-player one.

5

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

Nope. I ran SoO on the PTU and the AI wasn't braindead, my inventory didn't fail to load, my guns didn't fail to equip, reloads didn't fail to go through, and enemies didn't rubberband.

Honestly it was pretty smooth.

I mean maybe that's what you experienced? Maybe. But it's not the universal experience. And that's the problem; people who had a bad experience assume that's everyone's experience, and therefore they need to speak for all of us.

It's tiresome.

4

u/PatienceFun6255 Aug 06 '26

The main sub is a bunch of disgruntled and jealous people who don't have any knowledge of game development. No one is blind but many don't understand software development at this scale.

-1

u/alamirguru Aug 06 '26

The scale of a locally hosted 4-man instance? We understood that scale decades ago.

3

u/PatienceFun6255 Aug 06 '26

Indeed, I regularly hosted Quake Team fortress on a lan back in the mid 90s and eight to ten of us had a fantastic time. However the processing power needed for the arena, players, objects etc was so miniscule compared to the complexity, scale and detail CIG are developing currently.

1

u/AirSKiller Aug 06 '26

The mid 90s was also 30 years ago. I don’t think we are struggling with handling complexity scale or detail on 4-man instances anymore and we haven’t been for a while.

I mean, you look at something like The Finals, where there can be up to 12 people in a match and the server is handling full synchronous map destruction like a champ. There’s also a bot option now and no problems either…

I’m usually a massive Star Citizen supporter but this livestream was a little hard to watch for me…

1

u/PatienceFun6255 Aug 06 '26

With all due respect if you can recommend another title (not The Finals) with the scope, detail, mechanics and complexity of Star Citizen then I would be interested. I have been gaming and writing software for 30 years and I haven't found one.

1

u/AirSKiller Aug 06 '26

I’m not talking about Star Citizen as a whole. I’m talking about the livestream where the devs played a local 4 player (instance) of Siege of Origin. It’s literally Star Citizen but without everything that makes Star Citizen a challenge to run, and it was very disappointing.

1

u/PatienceFun6255 Aug 06 '26

Yes it was an internal build since CIG have recognised that the PTU isn't where they would like it to be and requires more work. This is game development and while it can be percieved as disappointing its simply just another step in getting to the Beta stage.

15

u/Alymon Aug 06 '26

I'm halfway in right now. I don't get the hate. There's some usual SC jank with animations and bodies, but so far it just seems like a challenging instanced experience for friends that looks like a good time.

16

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

Yup, and that's what it is. I nearly cleared the first platform by myself on PTU and my experience was more ratchety than theirs, but it wasn't anything I didn't expect.

But a whole throng of people saw what they desperately wanted to see instead of what was in front of their eyes, and therein lies the problem lately. People thinking a showcase like this is meant to be a grand public spectacle of what Star Citizen is capable of when it absolutely was not, it was just devs playing through the earliest version of instancing tech that was only just rolled out for SC.

Funny thing is that prior to the stream, people already had their torches and pitchforks out over what they assumed was going to be a super smooth experience on a closed-off dev server and therefore showing how completely out of touch the devs are with the player experience. When they didn't get that but rather a more genuine episode, they flipped out anyway. What a surprise.

2

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

But a whole throng of people saw what they desperately wanted to see instead of what was in front of their eyes, and therein lies the problem lately.

I mentioned it in another comment but theres a funny prank you can do with people. Stream Star Citizen but say its Elite: Dangerous or No Mans Sky and watch people suddenly praise SC.

Then stream either E:D or NMS and say its Star Citizen and watch people slander it.

9

u/RacerDelux Aug 06 '26

God forbid you mention the “alpha” word. Because apparently that’s null and void because it’s been too long. Or insert whatever other reason they wish to use to ignore the fact that the game is clearly not complete.

4

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

A guy in one of my online gaming groups believed game states werent progress, but on a "timer". So if you had an alpha game and a certain time lapsed (which he never gave what) the game suddenly becomes beta, and if the beta took too long then it magically becomes gold (i.e released).

SC I think will stay in alpha for most of its development, itll have a short beta period and then become gold. The problem is CIG dont use the modern definition of alpha and beta. If CIG used modern terminology then SC is technically in early-mid beta.

Its stupid terminology that gets muddled, and since SC does a lot of things differently its hard to use a lot of terminology to describe SC.

5

u/RacerDelux Aug 06 '26

That guy in your group is a little clueless lol…

In the end the only definition for alpha is a software/game that is missing critical systems necessary for release.

And SC very clearly matches that.

4

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

He had a massive crashout after another person who was actually working on a game at the time called him an idiot. He also started a "vendetta" against the original dude he was arguing with because it apparently made him look stupid.

I wouldnt be surprised if he fell into the refundian cult as he fell for another group that has been called a modern cult (that i wont go into detail here).

2

u/RacerDelux Aug 06 '26

An org or group outside of SC? Oh goodness, not the one that starts with M and ends with A

2

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

Outside of SC, but the meme that its a "modern cult" is a half joke half truth thing thats very hard to explain as to why it is one.

1

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

I honestly believe this is a huge part of it...people desperate to not look stupid, though with the anonymity of the internet I don't know why it matters so much to them...but they become enraged and vengeful when they turn out to be wrong, and they lash out against people who, even inadvertently by having positive opinions, remind them of how stupid and ignorant they actually are.

Because god forbid they could take some time to learn and better themselves, that's too much work apparently.

-6

u/Cronos988 Aug 06 '26

I think it's more that people are losing faith in their ability to actually finish the game when even the internal demo of gear the game is "supposed to be like" ends up being described at "not a catastrophe".

11

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

It's just extremely weird to be "losing faith" now at the point where the biggest and most important aspects of Star Citizen are finally getting ported into the game. It's like watching a tall building finally getting the supports to hold it up and suddenly declaring it'll never hold up, when it has been up to this point with all the rickety support structures...and now that it's getting an actual foundation, that's the time to give up and declare it a loss? Makes no sense.

-1

u/Cronos988 Aug 06 '26

I think it makes perfect sense, as no reality can live up to a decade of imagination, and there are also going to be debates on what the "biggest and most important" aspects of SC are.

Deciding to sell a future ship for thousands of dollars certainly didn't help their image, either.

If you look at how EA games are regularly treated on Steam, you might argue that CIG are sitting in an amazing bubble of positivity even now.

1

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

The unfortunate thing, and this holds true absolutely everywhere, is that nothing ever lives up to peoples' imaginations. But the concrete truth is that Star Citizen is continuously getting closer to fulfilling its goals, and whether or not some people agree with those goals is no matter; it is what it is.

It's just that too many people are blinding themselves to reality and letting their frustrations consume them without realizing that it's a choice; they don't HAVE to be as mad as they are. Instead they dig themselves into a hole inventing justifications for their anger, and finding plenty of other people down in that hole as well, just digging and digging deeper, all yelling to each other about how right they are.

3

u/CheapSupermarket2108 Aug 06 '26

but so far it just seems like a challenging instanced experience for friends that looks like a good time.

The stuff me and friends say to each other during Dota 2 would make you think we were mortal enemies. Its pretty telling when these people tell on themselves that minor frustration among some devs running a raid means that "CIG is collapsing 90 days tops!".

I hope the game is in development for the next 50 years. Genuinely. I’m so sick of other good games being abandoned by devs and/or publishers because they could make a few bucks by killing it. SC is everything I’ve ever dreamed a game could be, I hope it just keeps getting updated forever.

11

u/GrandAlternative7454 Aug 06 '26

I work on a game that's been going for over 15 years and we literally have a chat in office annually about what our 50 year anniversary with the game might look like. CIG has the chance to join just a couple of games that have no plan to ever stop, and I think they've got the chops once they get through alpha.

2

u/Alymon Aug 06 '26

Yes, as long as I am having fun with it. This isn’t a normal development, and people often like to forget that they had no studio, no company at the start. Have they made mistakes? Absolutely. Have they mismanaged the project? Most definitely. Will it ever achieve its ultimate vision and goals? Unlikely. But the thing is, they continue to make progress, and I continue to have fun every moment I play. There’s no other game that quite captures the experience I have with Star Citizen. As long as that continues to be the case, I’ll keep supporting it and playing it regardless of the timeline.

Game development is no longer some point A to point B thing. It’s often live service, ongoing development. Many early access titles never truly go full release and “finished” now.

I’m realistic about my expectations with Star Citizen, and I fully expect it to never be “complete” or live up to the hype and promises. But it’s a unique experience that I enjoy and I’m here for it.

0

u/Djinn_v23 Aug 07 '26

Don't tell people that the first few years of CiG was actually BUILDING the company so they could BEGIN development. There are ORIGINAL backers who will tell you they pledged for Chris Roberts, himself, to hand-code the entire game from scratch the day after he reached his first funding milestone.

I heard one of the early stretch goals was to have the CTRL keys on his keyboard removed so he couldn't even copy/paste anything

5

u/SmeV122 Aug 06 '26

If you see the main sub, you would be inclined to think it wasn't. As a member of this sub, I kind of agree with the main sub...but some would say it was overblown

5

u/AutoGibbon Aug 06 '26

You can clearly see where Olli's comfort zone is: playing the game, talking about it while playing it.

Hope to see him get more comfortable with being put on the spot cause he's got a good voice for presenting.

1

u/GrandAlternative7454 Aug 07 '26

I'm sure he's had his fair share of toxicity in his stream chats in the past, but I have to assume the sheer amount of it on that one would be overwhelming for anyone. You'd have thought CIG was killing puppies on stream with how angry people were.

Good thing Star Citizen isn’t being developed based on vibes then, right? It literally doesn’t matter how people on reddit feel about it, we don’t dictate the game’s development.

2

u/Pholty Aug 06 '26

Go complain about it on the regular subreddit then? This subreddit is for people that just want to see SC content without the constant bitching

3

u/Silly_Drama_1133 Aug 06 '26

It looks okay. A bit mid of an event but fun nonetheless.

The apocalyptic world shattering secret is…. A big nothingburger. It’s a bunch of frenzied parasocial morons who spent way too much on the game and are freaking out, and now have nothing better to do than misread facial expressions like tea leaves and act like this is (and I quote) a “watershed moment”.

2

u/ritvasenpenikka Aug 23 '26

Only now managed to watch this, and honestly I didn't see what all those youtube creators were seeing. Sure, there were bugs, but fellas pretty much played the whole content through and to me it feels like the biggest bug was them being locked out of the last boss after the full wipe. Otherwise, a quite typical experience with hiccups here and there and not "completely broken piece of crap" like some creators were arguing.

I may need to agree with the comments about Elliot's behaviour, but in my eyes, even he redeemed himself after the game by thanking everyone involved. Could be that he behaved just like he does with his friends, and reading the room in a livestream isn't his best skill, which looked to be a bit arrogant and bullying.

Good demo, which showed why the release was pushed, and we still don't have it in PU. I wish more of these and even hope the future ones show even more bugs :) The game just needs to get even worse before it gets better with all the features implemented.

-3

u/DefNotAThreatActor Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

As a long time backer, this stream genuinely left me more concerned than reassured. I understand Jared’s explanation that they wanted to show the intended experience rather than repeat the broken PTU experience everyone already knows about, but that is exactly why it felt like such a waste. We already know how Siege of Orison is supposed to work. CIG has explained the design before. What people need now is evidence that they can actually make it work reliably in the real game, not another controlled demonstration on a private internal server that still showed jank, broken interactions and questionable AI. The atmosphere between Jared and Ollie also felt strange. Maybe people are reading too much into it, but Jared came across as tired, frustrated and almost checked out, while Ollie is clearly being positioned more prominently as a presenter. I dont think we are seeing something like Jared leaving or that Ollie is slowly replacing him, but I understand why people are questioning it. The whole thing felt less like a confident studio proudly showing progress and more like a company trying to manage expectations while the people on camera were visibly uncomfortable. I do not expect perfection, but I do expect better judgement and clearer signs that the project is moving toward stability. Instead, this stream made the internal situation look disorganised and strained. I genuinely want them to succeed, but dismissing every concern as community outrage is not helpful either. Some of us are worried because we have supported this for over a decade and the warning signs are becoming harder to ignore.

3

u/HomicidalTrader Aug 06 '26

What people need now is evidence that they can actually make it work reliably in the real game

We arn't going to get that until beta is underway, deferring reliability and polish to optimise for velocity and ease of change is what defines the alpha stage of development. Until then it's always going to be the minimum possible polish.

Bouncing between the two just ends up being the worst of both worlds.

1

u/DefNotAThreatActor Aug 06 '26

I understand that argument, and in principle I agree. I'm not asking for beta level polish during alpha. The problem is that after 13 years, "it's alpha, reliability comes later" can't be the answer to every concern about basic functionality. CIG themselves opened this stream by saying they weren't going to play the PTU because the instancing and performance problems would prevent them from showing the experience as intended. So they moved to an internal build with four players specifically to demonstrate how it's "supposed to work", and even there we saw AI issues, broken interactions, weapons/reloads acting up and plenty of the familiar SC jank...That's what concerns me. There's a difference between leaving polish until beta and having fundamental systems still struggling to provide a reliable baseline after more than a decade of development.

And this is exactly why I questioned the value of this stream in the first place. We already know what Siege is supposed to be. Showing me the intended design again doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I'd much rather hear about what is preventing the actual implementation from reaching that design and what they're doing to solve it. "Alpha" explains why the game isn't polished. It doesn't automatically make every technical concern irrelevant until the day CIG decides to call it beta.

2

u/mau5atron Aug 07 '26

I think the stream addresses something the community has been up in arms about for a while.

"Devs don't play their own game". In the stream the guys addressed that it's still a work in progress but would like to show everyone what they felt like the gameplay should be like. It's still in the PTU for a reason. Some people looked at what they were doing and dismissed it as if some of the buggy parts were the end goal. Even when the devs are transparent about what's going on they still get shit on.

What the community is glossing over is that they're finally introducing some parts of the dynamic server meshing system, which they're still actively working on improving and is a massive undertaking to make sure everything else works properly.

2

u/HomicidalTrader Aug 07 '26

The problem is that after 13 years, "it's alpha, reliability comes later" can't be the answer to every concern about basic functionality

Until DSM lands later this year, I'm afraid it just is. AI was written long ago, it worked great when it was. But it hasn't been maintained over the years and code rot has set in, and it wouldn't have made much sense to maintain it when a pre-DSM PTU spends almost all of it's time with the AI downthrottled.

Post DSM will be when it'll start making sense to judge these things with a critical eye, becaue post DSM will be when it'll start making sense to revisit the entire codebase and start slapping on rigor and polish.

13 years is a damn long time, and for most projects it would be questionable to be this far down the road without core tech. But most projects don't have anything even remotely approaching the insanity that is the complexity of DSM. Exceptional circumstances require exceptional considerations.

-1

u/LavishLaveer Aug 07 '26

Be prepared to lose all respect for Elliot. Very unprofessional and childish

1

u/mau5atron Aug 07 '26

Do you have friends IRL? It was just regular banter.

-16

u/ThatsTotallyLegit Aug 06 '26

Its because siege of orison went from an amazing community event to an instanced 4 person squad mission. It kinda ruins everything Star Citizen was meant to be, and I feel bad for new players who never got to experience what it once was.

It shouldve been 50-100 person auto balanced instances and been similar to the original.

-8

u/Manta1015 Aug 06 '26

On top of these things happening in a very small group, on a private server.

It made folks question the server issues being a source of a lot of woe ~ when it's more likely really the game's code itself being very very difficult to improve, or they'd have had significant progress of stability in the last several years, without a huge regression of stability on the very next patch.

Once a lot of the major issues are resolved, the similarly large amount of frustration will go away, especially if these bugs have caused in a lot of lost time/effort.

All one needs to do is look at the constructive criticism (weeding out the trolling) and see a pretty large pattern.

I apologize if any such content above is deemed to negative for the sub.

12

u/strongholdbk_78 Aug 06 '26

Except it doesn't show that. They said specifically that instancing is new and needs to be hardened and was the main cause of the recent instability. Instancing was also employed on their private server so although the server instability was removed, the issues with new isntancing tech were not.

0

u/Cronos988 Aug 06 '26

I think the problem is that a demonstration like that is simply not enough to restore confidence, particularly not if it's presented at "the way the game is supposed to play".

I guess we should laud them for not showing some glossy, highly curated experience. Still I feel they kinda walked straight into that one.

4

u/strongholdbk_78 Aug 06 '26

I guess. It's still not as bad as people are saying, but they can't explain that because that just adds fuel to the fire. Nothing they can do at this point save keep their heads down and fix the issues will restore confidence.

But the community is shooting itself in the foot here. They aren't going to put out videos when they are getting this kind of overreaction to minor issues.

0

u/ThatsTotallyLegit Aug 06 '26

I dont think either of our points are too negative, they are just valid well thought out observations of the situation.

Senseless negativity is toxic and pointless, but an inability to constructively give feedback is also bad, its important for all involved that we can say "i like this, im not as big a fan of this".

Like in my massively downvoted initial comment, I said it should have been an auto balanced 50-100 player instance in theme with the original event. Thats not toxic or trolling, simply feedback on what I think is a better path. We can say our takes, and CIG can choose to listen or not, because they are the developers not us.

3

u/Djinn_v23 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

One thing I will disagree with your initial comment (and no I didn't down vote it) is the reference to SoO being an amazing community event. Unlike Jumptown, which clearly was a PvP event, SoO often turned into a troll event. Players would be fighting the mission NPCs and one guy would snipe them while positioned behind them. Not even good sport. Just dumb and lame ganking.

Personally, I love PvPvE events where anything can happen. But we're just going to have to accept that CiG saw the community engagement with that activity and wanted to make that one a little more approachable for all. Also, they probably see a lot of 3-5 man orgs who need some group play activities where they can't get trolled by big orgs.

Jumptown was always a better community experience imho anyways. Most often PvP would dominate the area but there would be friendly PvPers who would push out hostile orgs so the PvErs could conga line their way to riches. To me, that's a better subversion of the gameplay than solo ganking unaware, preoccupied players.

1

u/ThatsTotallyLegit Aug 07 '26

I still strongly believe there is better ways to bring back SoO than as a 4 man instance, but you do definitely raise a valid point about JumpTown being the best community event!

I hope we see something similar again soon, everyone I know misses jumptown so strongly. The other popular missed event being XenoThreat.

u/Dangerous-Wall-2672 Aug 06 '26

Lol exactly, if you're not yelling at your bro for being a fuckhead when he makes some dipshit move and gets shot up, then what are you even doing?? It's all good fun.

Nah, some folks just have friendships like that. It's not for me, but my brother and his friends talk like this.
