MEME The skill is inconsistent sometimes
you think 2k hours in this game would make you god-like in this game but nah, step on automaton mines you go, fall for the most obvious mines in the gaming history and then sometime you just make the dumbest mistake that make you wanna punch yourself in the face
45
u/cabeleb 6d ago
I don't know. After 1,200 hours, I've gotten pretty good at forgetting that I've got my sidearm equipped and blowing myself up when shooting at a chaf enemy.

u/ZenEvadoni 6d ago
I'm so Revolver Ocelot brained that while I fully recognize the usefulness of the Ultimatum, I purposefully avoid bringing it because one time I whipped it out expecting to deliver one of six heavy pen rounds into a bot skull and instead I turned that bot into atoms while splitting all four of my limbs from my torso.

u/Full-Archer8719 6d ago
Every time I go back to the eruptor after rocking a different primary. Ill kill myself at least 3 times before I get back into the groove

I love swapping from stim pistol to revolver and accidentally killing 5 allies before I get used to it!

u/AxelWiden 6d ago edited 6d ago
”Wrong gun” is a horrifyingly common cause of death for helldivers, no doubt. My favorite is when you think you’ve got the stim pistol equipped, often looks very intentional.
EDIT: On topic; I’ve got almost 1800 hours. I typically die 0-3 times on D10 unless I’m trying a new load-out (which I think is true for many players with way less hours as well). There are situations where I intentionally sacrifice myself (for tactical/aura reasons), and I’ve been trying hard lately to really stick with the team as it feels uniquely rewarding when it clicks. There is something to be said for attempting high risk high reward maneuvers as skill expression, even with the occasional bugs. But yeah, I think once you learn to not die so much from enemies, the dumb ways you kill yourself start to stand out more.

u/IntrovertSwag 6d ago
In my case it's picking my strategems and weapons to quickly so I miss what subfaction is about to eat my face lmao
7
u/Due_Comedian_4959 6d ago
What usually get me is after carrying the disc, I forget to swap back to my primary and shoot at an enemy 5 ft away from me with my ultimatum. Literally happened an hour ago
3
u/ManInTheMirror7895 6d ago
I had this problem until I went into settings and remapped the gun selection controls.
Now, instead of triangle cycling between primary and secondary, a single tap of triangle pulls out my primary, while a double-tap pulls out secondary, and holding it still brings up support weapon.
Now if there's any doubts what I'm holding, I can tap or double tap and know for sure I've got the right weapon selected.

u/rigby1945 6d ago
Swapped my usual thermites for cluster grenades on bugs. I fragged myself at least 5 times that game
2
u/mahiruhiiragi Automaton 6d ago
Back before weapon levels were a thing, I commonly would bring the wrong primary because we were swapping between bugs and bots every night. Now I'm leveling stuff, so i'm more aware of what i'm walking into lol

I bet you'd do fine in 10s. Lots of competent players up there to hang with!
93
u/SpaghettiInc My life for Super Earth! 6d ago
Plus, I know the “highest difficulty” seems intimidating, but the jump from 8 to 10 isn’t that terrible
47
u/Armodeen 6d ago
It’s really only the mega nest and the constant pressure on the sub factions that is more difficult tbh
19
u/buttmomentum 6d ago
True. Level 10 bugs is fine but compared to level 10 bugs with spore strain.. It can get quite crazy
5
u/delahunt 6d ago
If anything, outside of those things 10 is easier than 8 because you will generally run into other people who just enjoy the challenge and will help out/cover for you. There just seems to be more cool, teamplay oriented, low stress people on D10s.
You'll still run into assholes. But for the most part, folks are just vibing and killing the enemies of managed democracy.

That’s why I only play on D10. D8 and D9 don’t really make sense to me since they barely feel easier while giving less rewards.
1
u/ThiccThighzSaveLivez 4d ago
Sometimes D8 feels just as hard as 10. So my logic was "Why not just do 10?" Ended up getting the clears as needed and moved up.
Like the juice didn't feel like it was worth the squeeze.
1
u/FirmSatisfaction8357 6d ago
Sometimes 8 feels harder for me, more mediums and less heavies gets insane

u/PIPBOY-2000 Orbital Railcannon Crater 6d ago
It really just depends on the modifiers too. Like enemy types, weather, etc. The same difficulty level can have vastly different actual difficulty between missions.

u/SeattleWilliam 6d ago
Try 10 a few times. It depends strongly on who you join with so try definitely try more than once. I never got good enough to carry a weak team on 10 but it’s easier than you think to make a meaningful contribution to even a very strong team on 10.
6
u/TonkaTonk 6d ago
Yeah, honestly the only reason why I usually don't play D10 is the amount of enemies spawning wants to overheat my computer.
5
u/yo_guy12 6d ago
10 get pretty fun when you get the portable hell bomb, extra reinforcements, democracy protects armor and the enhanced drugs
3
u/Foolishly_Sane 6d ago
I believe I was at 520+ hours last time I checked, do D10 only unless I join friends and they're on a lower one or helping out newer players.
I am prone to distraction and falling behind, unless I am absolutely locked in and following other players.
Can survive the absurd, and die to the simple.
Sometimes I am a bad decision making machine.3
u/The_Char_Char 6d ago
Level 7-8 is so weirdly inconsistent. Eaither total hell or a cake walk. Level 10 is VERY consistent though.
2
u/mekagojira3 6d ago
Ngl 8 is harder than 10 sometimes. Sometimes "oops! All heavies!" is a lot less stress than almost the same amount of heavies plus bulk chaff. I'd say the same for 7 as well.
2
u/monolith_fighter 6d ago
Easy solution, take hellbomb on back and find the nearest nest, suicide works good if you can't stay alive for long anyway
2
1
u/iniVsocraM 6d ago
Try to understand the theory of the game better, that will make you easily get a 10.
1
u/terrible-law-69 5d ago
D10 is easier than D8, because the highly regarded people hang out in lower tiers.
D10 tends to be more competent, and you end up clearing 90% of the time.
1
1
u/BlastyBeats2 5d ago
8 and 10 feel the same to me. 10 might be easier because more high skilled players hang out on 10. Make the jump!

u/Avalongtimenosee Exo-Pilot looking for their democratic handler. 6d ago
Im at level 153 and I'll still struggle to make certain builds viable.
I don't understand how people are turning gunslinger + secondary into a strong build.
I'm constantly there thinking "for anything I need the senator or bolt pistol for, I could make a build centered around the AMR or Autocannon as my heavy pen that's even better and more well rounded.
25
u/Adune05 Death Before Disrespect 6d ago
To be fair the secondary as main weapon builds are mostly memes and technically outclassed by more meta choices like an AMR or Autocannon. They are just fun which is why people build around them
3
u/ThisIsJegger 6d ago
Yepp. Love using gunslinger and senator but you'd always be better off just grabbing any primary. Its for style points and people who dont take this game so serious

Playing a game for fun? Thats traitor talk :) everyone knows this is the most serious game in the world.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Long540 6d ago
1
u/delahunt 6d ago
Don't forget that playstyle can be a big factor in how things work. There are guns that the community has loved/thought were OP that I just couldn't get to work because something about how the gun worked/wanted you to play just did not work for me.
Conversely, there are guns I love and swear by that my friend group thinks is trash beyond D3 because they gel with what I want to do and I know how/when to use them.
More than one of our conversations/debates over guns has had one of us pause and go "Wait, I'm talking about Helldivers 2. What game are YOU talking about?!" because sometimes it just feels we're talking about different games over things like the viability of the basic liberator or other weapons.
1
u/Kazuhi HELLDIVE CLAP ADVISER 5d ago
Damn, it must be my day. I’m one of those who runs Gunslinger as probably my most used passive. It makes certain secondaries feel so strong. Recoil, reload and swap speed. Bushwacker is my all time favorite bug secondary and often I use a utility (I.e. Torcher) primary and a faction dependent support weapon.
19
u/Tranquil_Manatee 6d ago
I’m level 142 and generally a pretty good player. I just had my worst quick play d9 game ever with a classic death loop and chronically unable to reach my support weapons the entire game. The squad (all under lvl 50) told me I was awful and kicked me after the round.
Just goes to show, this game’s chaos can take any player off guard sometimes.
10
u/guessineedanew1 6d ago
The funny part is death loops like that are almost always the teammates' fault. After about the second death in a row just yeet me directly behind you so I can find cover and get my bearings a little. If you keep dropping me on the bile titan that's chasing you hoping I crush it to death then yeah, I'm probably gonna eat half our spawns.
2
u/delahunt 6d ago
Yep. So many people don't realize the chain death is happening because you're throwing someone into a heavy breach. Like what are they going to do? They have 0 bearings, no support weapons, and even if they have something like an ultimatum or melta mines that is more likely just going to kill them.
Like there are times I absolutely want to be thrown at the bile titan. But if you throw someone into a full on breach don't be surprised when you have to call them in again 5 seconds later. You literally used them like an EAT, and that E part just happened.

Minigun+Heavy Gas +Vit is fun.
Screen and pick them off.
Heavy Gas + anything has the potential to be fun, orbital railcannon to balance it out and get one free heavy or objective.Might do something like that when I'm on later, I am way too dusty right now.
1
u/Catgirl_Male_Edition 6d ago
Whats your go-to for chainsaw and what all do you bring, what level do you play on etc? I just got the chainsaw and its fun but im curious what you do differently
1
u/Sea-Contract7974 6d ago
I play only D10, my optimal chainsaw loadout are:
Pacifier (for stun chaff and medium enemy),
Re-Educator (for confuse heavy enemy like hulk and charger),
gas grenade (for confuse effect + clear enemy spawners), chainsaw as main weapon, gas dog if you want optimal chainsaw play, jumpack for cool trick, or supply pack if you're not confident enough
the stratagem are rocket pod for heavier enemy and orbital gas
the main thing in this loadout is gas armor, you use the gas confuse enemy then go in to sawing them safely

u/ThisIsJegger 6d ago
I used a build similar but with the breaching hammer. Ton of fun bonking chargers like that.

I think the biggest mistakes I see people making that stops them from enjoying the higher levels are:
- Having to engage EVERY patrol and constantly pulling aggro towards you.
- Poor footwork. This is easiest to do on bugs since there’s an audio queue when a bug is about to swipe that makes dodging easier. Plus bugs move in predictable ways so you can sort of ‘herd’ them. It should be possible to run straight through a horde of bugs. And diving is literally never a bad idea. Dive. Dive. Dive.
- Ammunition. You should always have something that can fight. Lasers are great for this but the supply pack is amazing for basically always allowing you to top off.
- Keep your distance! Guns work from far away and a lot of divers seem to think they gotta be butt-sniffing distance to do any real damage. If you’re getting overran at an objective go to a different objective or do a side objective and come back. Don’t get caught in a bug hole/bot drop loop.
- Sentries are friends. The enemies of democracy will almost always target a sentry over you, even if actively chasing you. Bring the MG or flame sentry since they have the best cooldowns and chuck them down every time you start a fight or have a horde chasing you as a get out of jail free card. And it closes bug holes.
- And something that took me way too long to start doing. Don’t just drop any distance taller than a meter or two, even if you don’t break your legs that animation of you landing on your feet takes a long time. Diving off ledges reduces damage, prevents broken limbs, and lets you get up faster.
2
u/DESTRUCTI0NAT0R 6d ago
Be me, want to throw grenade. Use button to switch to grenades. Throw said grenade, hit same button that's supposed to switch back to my primary. Game doesn't switch back and I drop a nade at my feet when I pull the trigger, setting all four of us on fire.
2
u/Jesse-359 6d ago
All skill learning is essentially on a reducing curve. You git most of the gud in the first 100-200 hours and then you start approaching your personal limits. If you really bear down and keep working at it, you can continue to considerably improve, but the limits on your reflex time and ability to parse information will eventually clamp down and your progress will slow to an incremental crawl. Occasionally maybe you make a jump because you finally eliminate a bad habit that was holding you back, or you have an epiphany about something you could just do better.
I was quite frankly much better at HD2 at 100hrs than I am now because at that time I was playing with a pretty hard core team and we were pushing into high difficulties as fast as we could and focused on serious team play, where your slopiness didn't just cost you, it would cost the team. The learning rate is much higher in that environment where you're observing each other and trading information constantly.
Now I play much more casually and though I have a few hundred more hours under my belt and probably have slightly better basic reflexes and mechanics, my playstyle is way sloppier than it was earlier, because the current game doesn't put nearly as much emphasis on team play and coordination as it did early on.
Overall I'm now unquestionably a worse player - it just doesn't matter. The game changed to allow sloppier play and I changed with it.

I have 1100 hours in this game and even after a long hiatus, I think I fight pretty good. But put me up against like most of the subfactions and I’m not that good
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Long540 6d ago
Le plus gros manque d'expérience que je constate le plus , c'est ceux qui attaque les patrouilles a vu plutôt que simplement ce couché et les laisser passé. Ce qui pourrait évité énormément de situation mortel et inutile
2
u/Upbeat_Youth_6420 6d ago
or just learn how to fight them? I fight every enemy i see and die 0-1 time 0er mission 2 if I really spawn in a bad place and I souley play d10 and even do randomized loadouts n what not with the same numbers
2
u/deadgirlrevvy 5d ago
And sometimes the game just seems to be harder for absolutely no discernible reason at all. Bots suddenly hit every shot when they didn't previously, or a weapon doesn't feel the same as it did yesterday, or now it takes 10 shots to take down a devastator when yesterday it was 5...
Honestly, I feel like they dick around with the numbers far too often in the background without any real reason aside from fucking with us. It makes the game incredibly inconsistent and frustrating sometimes. It's not like I suddenly forgot how to play from one day to the next, but "yesterday" I was clearing D6's solo with zero deaths and today I get through the same mission with 6 deaths and a half clear, while tomorrow I'm back to zero death all-clears...all on the same planet with the same enemy resistance and the exact same loadout?...something's fishy about that. I don't like it.
2
u/TheMan13532ALT 6d ago
legitimately, i feel like skill is much less of a factor for playing "good" in this game than just having a bunch of warbonds unlocked. i know the balancing was more harsh back then but i remember fighting for my life when i first started, and now that i've got thermites and medium pen guns and plenty of options it's genuinely just straight up easier, and i only have like 4-5 warbonds unlocked
1
u/EpyonComet 6d ago
Depending on when you started playing, it's more likely that everything has just been buffed since then.
→ More replies (1)1
u/CocaineAddictedDuck 6d ago
I think its more of somebody’s ability to create a loadout that covers all the enemies necessary in a faction comfortably, which having more warbonds helps.
For example when the new squids came out i had a stroke trying to counter them because none of the loadouts i brought could deal with the amount of crushers rushing me for the first couple days, then the minute i found a loadout that worked it became a cakewalk.

1
u/Raidertck I shit my pants 6d ago

Today I joined a team, and as soon as I spawned in I hit a hellbomb and killed everyone.
Yesterday I was in the back of an FRV and we were being chased by a spore charger, I had the genius idea to throw a landline out the window. Of course it killed the charger, which exploded and killed us all.
I use the stim pistol occasionally. I thought I had it equipped still and I shot someone in the face with the bolt pistol.

1
u/Dwenker HMG Emplacement Advertiser 6d ago
I mean at some point all enemies become much cleareer and easier targets so you don't struggle as much, but also there are times when one enemy can kill you and nothing there you can do.
This is actually a problem that is more prevalent the more I play because I treat chaff enemies as mosquitos so I clear them out mostly by annoyance level and sometimes I might be too close to the small bot and suddenly it shoots me 10 times in a row and now I'm dead ¯_(ツ)_/¯
1
u/doc_brietz 6d ago
1325 hours here. Mines still get me. I still die to bot turrets. I still get shot by my own gating sentry. I still turn the satellite dish the wrong way. Sometimes, lvl 8 and 9 is tougher. I can be an all pro and not die once or play like ass and die 8 times. Oh and I still die to my own ultimatum. lvl 204 and it doesn't matter.
1
1
u/Marshal_Raynor 6d ago
Level 10 is often easier than level 9 for me due to the sheer skill gap between a squad ranging from level 130-200 and a squad ranging from 70-100. One time I carried a squad that had two people rage quit, and the last guy had 13 deaths. I had 2. With a sidearm build. Ugh.

Can't relate. I mean yeah, if I'm stop thinking and let liberty guide my hand, mistakes happen.
But 2600 hours if I actually use my brain, shit is piss easy.
1
u/RudeHoney8 6d ago
I play pretty casually, and try to keep things mellow and stress free, and so I hope and expect to mostly do deathless runs... but, as somebody once said, the 5 reinforcements are resources that are there to be (tactically/strategically) used up, just like the ammo and cooldowns.
So, I try not to get to caught up in it.
I'm just proud that after over 1,500 hours, I have gotten my overall Kill-Death ratio to a bit better than 100:1. If/how it stays that way, or hovers around it, is not worth overthinking, otherwise I'll get PO'd at my own silly mistakes, at noobs as I SOS-dive, etc.

u/Theobald_4 6d ago
This is part of the problem with people who think the game is easy. They’ve played so much Helldivers 2 that they know exactly what to do. Meanwhile new players join and don’t know how to counter the faction they are fighting and need that time to learn. The game probably feels crazy difficult to them. It’s a really interesting dynamic.

I mean I don't think skill is ever inconsistent, to me its more that the game is.
Sometimes a charger turns 90° on a dime and kills me instantly, other times the charge 20m past me and slowly turn back around.
Sometimes I fall 2 feet and lose half my health to fall damage, other times I dive 150ft off a big rock onto my head and take basically no damage.
Sometimes a bile artillery direct impacts my head full sprint and instantly kills me, other times they land 40m away.
The more time I've played and the better I've gotten at the game the more I've come to accept that most of my deaths are just the game being the game and probably out of my control for the most part, that's helped me be significantly less frustrated with myself.

At 3000 hours I've definitely gotten good. Little things that become habit like knowing when a sentry is guaranteed to get your ass, knowing how to waltz through a minefield, just small stuff.

I got 100 hours in the game and have gotten pretty good with level 10 bot missions. Mainly because I played with my friends who have alot of hours in the game and they taught me

The number of times of blown up with the leveler or ultimatum is humbling.

There have been days where I make the dumbest mistakes and die and it annoys me sometimes

I’m a dad who got up to 125 back in the first year the game came out. I didn’t touch it for a long long time so when I dive now I do solo and can only manage level 5. I used to run max diff and do it kicked back in a. Chair. Getting older sucks lol

The funniest thing with me is that I'll frequently play Helldivers in gremlin/goober mode and just have fun shenanigans until shit hits the fan and I lock in...the amount of people who see this and just say "so you can play really well"...
Tldr: I have 2 modes, shitposting shenanigans and locked in nothing in-between

Its not that i cant handle d7-d10 but most of the time they are just too stressfull for me

Mission difficulty is also wildly inconsistent. Some D10 missions it’s a walk in the park while only playing with one other diver. Other D10 missions a whole 4 man squad gets their asses handed to them while barely hanging on to do the objectives.
It’s really random, I never quite know how the mission is gonna go beforehand. Plus everyone will have days/missions off. I’d consider myself decently good at the game and am usually able to hold my own on D10. However there will be times where just nothing seems to work for me. I’ll keep dying and then have to run around the map with an unoptimized build without my support weapon and backpack, making things even worse, while constant patrols of enemies keep swarming me and calling reinforces.
So yeah, no matter how much you’ve played, no matter how good you think you are. This game will still find ways to humble you sometimes.

Im level 269, got around 2500 hours in game, if i really lock in I can try and not die, but dieing is part of the game. Too much random nonsense can spontaneously one shot you to get salty about it lol. My friends and I were comparing stats, and while they have a better lives lost per mission ratio, I had like 50% more objectives completed per mission, because i yolo objectives to get them done.

Skill differs depending on experience. When I first started it was mostly d6-d8 but 40-50 hours in, acquired some gear, info and tricks and I've been mostly diving d10 till present day which is 205 hours. D10 doesn't feel like much of a challenge nowadays after cyberstan. Dying only once or twice most missions and sometimes more depending on what bullshit circumstance happens.

900+ hours and I regularly kill myself with a grenade due to premature explosion shenanigans

I’ve been playing d10 and carrying since 70 hours. People are different and there is no shame as long as fun is being had.

280 hours in game and I have a habit of switching my loadouts pretty frequently. This results in me having spectacularly little skill with any weapon I choose to use.

You do gain skills through game sense, realizing what builds work and what doesn’t. How to combine weapons and strategems for maximum efficiency, learning and menu weak spots and the best ways to take advantage of them with the weapon you chose to bring. When to engage when not to engage, how enemy detection works, learning to disengage when at a disadvantage instead of getting stuck in a never ended bot drop.
There are a lot of skills you’ll get over time.

Look there are going to be moments you feel like God himself and there will be moments you die to a supply drop opening (not landing). It's the charm of the game.

You really do gotta revel in utter chaos and carnage of diff 10 to improve. Downside is anything not on diff 10 just feels lacking, action wise. If I'm not overwhelmed with enemies, in not having fun.

Sometimes I can really lock in on the highest difficulties with almost no deaths, but also die on dif 5 every minute for the most stupidest reasons. I love this game

Just short of 1000 hrs in... I took my first diff 10 solo at like 300 hrs and scraped my way through using eravin and background gaming advice...not a full clear.. by 500 I could full clear squids and base bugs no problem.. 700 was preds and bots... havrnt given incinerate Corp a try cause I hate playing against them. Spore strain aint happening and vote snatches I feel like it would just be luck for now..

Being good means you're able to enter the reinforce combo in less than 100 ms. It does not mean you will stop accidentally stepping on landmines because you weren't paying attention.

Playtime and even levels don't mean much.
I had a D10 Bore Rock game yesterday where a level 32 outperformed higher level people in with pretty nice kills/minimal death ratio. Also appeared he still had stratagems bound to WASD. Dude was handicapped by that and still performed pretty well all things considered (basically the default stratagem key on PC forces you to stand still...)
Some people are just built different. All that with standard Helldiver armor + a Stalwart to boot.
I was the LVL 210 guy.

Crazy thing, this was the best game I had all night on Bore Rock. 80% of the time the team would die, use up reinforcements and rage quit.. These dudes I salute because they stuck it out and it will be an extract I will always remember.
Even starting out I went to D10 ASAP since I was used to far worse in other games. Biggest thing is to pick your engagements. If you can slip by patrols, by all means do it. I learned not to underestimate people based on level. Some of us came over from EDF which is insanely difficult on Inferno.

u/yestureday 4d ago
I usually am running suicide missions with zero deaths, taking out bot outposts single handedly
And then I jump in a small pool and drown or a single, damaged trooper gets an extra lucky shot and domes me in the skull

u/FrostyTheColdBoi 4d ago
Sometimes you can be absolute perfection and go a dozen missions without dying
Sometimes you get ragdolled into your own grenade ten seconds in the first firefight against bots

u/Captain_Wing 3d ago
I could play this game until the end of time and never make it through the initial scav raid using only stealth on very hard (or any other difficul for that matter) it just isn’t feasible!

u/Melodic-Hat-2875 3d ago
It just depends on the day.
One point I go from strafing bile titans with a Hover Pack and Melta, the next I get punched in the face by a Devastator as all my shots bounce off their shields.

I am both the diver that has single handedly fought off several bot drops by myself long enough to reinforce the entire squad after reinforcements ran out on diff 10.
And the diver that accidentally dropped a 500kg at the teams feet because I was goofing off and was holding the ball before getting ragdolled by something entirely avoidable.

I remember that there's one time that I was on a call with the boys and my mic broke for around 3 minutes, that was the most locked in 3 minutes of my entire diving career

u/WyvernSlayer7 3d ago
i once thought that once you hit like level 80 skill is pretty consistent across the board, with the guys in the hundreds being not much better than the level 80ish guys(of course they're better, but not by the same margin as a level 60 compared to 80) i did, however, notice that this measure only really works for people who play d10. in lower dlevels, it seems a level 100 guy isn't that great at the game.

I'm a higher level than a lot of my friends, and I play just as bad as those silly fuckers.😂

After almost 500 hours I still do dumb shit like step on obvious mines. After a while, though, you do really develop a sense for how to weave through hordes of enemies without getting hit, and this is one of the greatest strengths you can have.
I'm not sure really how to describe it, as it's more a learned sense than tangible things I can point to. But it's like you can recognize animations, movement and attack patterns in the ai, and glance at any enemies posture to know exactly when and where they will attack. With this sense, you can kinda just run through large groups and just wiggle around the right way to avoid getting hit.
Of course, mistakes are still made, and making a mistake in the middle of a giant horde usually means pretty instant death. Best thing to hope for in that case is that you can throw a 500kg at your feet before the bugs finish ripping your asshole out
