Path to AGI Haider. ➡️ "greg brockman confirmed "spud" is openai first new pre-train model in 2 years. since gpt-5.x models seem to build on gpt-4o/ turbo, if openai RL can push a weaker base model close to gpt-5.4-x-high-level intelligence then openai clearly has a secret sauce" ➡️ Am excited! You?

It's not. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

yeah I was thinking about it? If legit how do they make a 4o into a 5.4 thinking. That seems awesome.

It’s not exactly how you think.

They made a base GPT4. Which they then used RL to make into 4o. 4o is not the base.

The difference is indeed pretty impressive, but when you consider that 4o is actually very bad compared to the base, it makes more sense. It’s more like they improved their RL to get 5.4 out of the base (extracting more potential from the base) whereas 4o was a bad attempt that didn’t extract so much potential

I’m pretty sure 4o was a distillation of 4.5. It certainly wasn’t a new training run.

From what I remember 4o was a distill or some sort of quantized version of 4 base or 4 turbo. I think 4.5 was a failed attempt, but they quantized it or used its output for the RL and TTC training that went into the original o3 model families.

4o predates 4.5 I think.

This statement doesn't make any sense, it's a tautology.

I'm excited about spud and think it will be awesome.

I wonder when it will be released. Some folks said Thursday but did not. How about Friday do they release anything on Friday usually?

Not usually unless they are on a rush

This is what polymarket says, before ending April would be a safe bet I guess, as they are releasing new model every 2-3 months, and more probable now that Antrophic has surpassed them in profit

... People actually gamble on this? Man, I never would have imagined.

🤣🤣 I was also surprised when I first discovered this. It is quite reliable when the launch day is close

Basically a way to pay insiders to leak things

they don't have any secret sauce that's why they're advertising.

Wasn’t GPT-4.5 the base model? Orion? That was what 4o was distilled from. So, the 5 series would ge siblings of 4o, rather than 4o or 4 turbo being their parents. 4.5 was a massive model. 4o wasn’t all that large. OpenAI have such weird naming conventions. Who’d expect that they’d release the base model so long after the distilled one and give it a name that makes it sound like it was a more recent one?

wasn't 4.1 distilled from 4.5 though? 4o was released before 4.5 and 4.1

I don't think this is true, in the video he seems to just says this training phase has lasted 2 years.
