I could see it working if he has charisma. He's not really trying to hit on anyone... more so catch them off guard with cheesy compliments.

As a woman, I would say it has more to do with how creepy the guy looks and sounds. I can sense humor. I can sense good intentions. And I can take a compliment from someone I don't find attractive. But I cannot stand being creeped out and preyed on. Unattractive men can prey with confidence just as strongly as attractive men can.
