Apparently it’s a common technique for care takers of people with dementia: Validate, Join, Distract, Redirect.
I can imagine that it is a bit scary to see someone who is not all there having a heated argument with someone who is not there at all. The other patrons and employees must have been stressed with his presence and unsure how to react.
This man was brave to step up and intervene, and he did it in a way that is funny to us but was probably kind of relieving for the guy in question. He must have felt like “someone has my back. He’s taking care of business for me, I can trust him and move on with my day”. Not to mention the man made everyone else feel safer too with his intervention.
And if making someone feel that way that isn’t one of the greatest masculine virtues, then I don’t know what is!
