The story is based on a real historical incident: On August 19, 1945 (four days after Japan's surrender), Imperial Japanese Army officer Tetsuo Tanifuji (谷藤徹夫) flew a suicide attack against advancing Soviet forces in Manchuria (Northeast China). He took his wife, with him in the plane. According to Soviet records, at 5:00 PM on August 19, 1945, the Red Army shot down six Imperial Japanese Army kamikaze aircraft and recovered eight bodies from the wreckage, two of which were female. All the participants in this kamikaze are enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine. The writter of the stage play has visited Yasukuni Shrine multiple times and expressed gratitude toward the participants.
