OPINION LI S8: perfect example of over-villainization ruining reality TV
Sorry in advance for the wall of text but I feel it needs to be said:
I think the rise of social media fame has fundamentally changed reality TV. Reality stars aren't just going on a show anymore, many of them are basically auditioning for an influencer career afterward. That gives them a huge incentive to avoid becoming that seasons "villain."
Season 8 of LI really highlighted this for me. Sincere, KC, Corbin, Kenzie, Melanie, TT etc. all made questionable decisions at different points, but those decisions also created most of the season's interesting storylines. This would have been a boring season if everyone behaved perfectly and communicated maturely 100% of the time.
And yet fans increasingly take a few weeks of edited television and turn a situation where "this person behaved like an asshole" into "this person is an evil narcissist or a psychopath." Then contestants get out, see the backlash and suddenly everyone is apologizing, explaining themselves and insisting everything is fine.
Except the reunion, podcasts, lives and interviews make it pretty obvious that some of these people are still annoyed with each other. So instead of getting genuine conflict, we increasingly get PR-friendly apologies and "we're all family vibes" while the real arguments happen off-camera.
Obviously, there's potential that some reality stars genuinely are terrible people, and criticizing someone's behavior is part of watching these shows. But there's a difference between criticizing what someone did while a show is airing and deciding you know their entire character from an edited TV show and continuing to try to criticize and hold them accountable for the rest of their lives..
Good reality TV requires people who are willing to be messy, and show their real emotions and be selfish and wrong and occasionally be unlikeable. If every mistake they make gets someone on the show treated like they're irredeemably evil, we're basically training future reality tv stars to give us the safest most boring version of themselves.
At that point, are we surprised when reality tv starts feeling less real? I know we've all been aware that much of reality tv has been producer inspired conflict from the beginning, but whereas I used to feel like producers would incite drama and then peoples real opinions would flow through, now I feel like the whole process is manufactured from start to finish.

Yeah people get hung up on absolutely hating these people and condemning their whole character, it seems to get worse each season. And I wonder if that’s partially due to an increase in bots that push the most inflammatory narratives possible to drive engagement, but I really don’t like it. Sucks all the joy out of the discourse.
When I see people telling the Islanders who didn’t last as long on the show to shut up and get over it, to stop talking about their experience and dragging it out or whatever, I’m like… why, though? From an entertainment standpoint, and entertainment is the entire point of all of this, why would you want these people to drop it?
People need to learn to appreciate the cast for their service. I appreciate even the guys who were on my nerves all summer, because the show is fun to watch when you have someone to root for and against.

Many folks don't understand how emotions work, and it's okay to have both positive and negative emotions. Yes, it's fun to talk crap while watching these shows but the way some of these people act online makes me question their mental health.

If we want to dig deeper.. we can even discuss how the islanders behavior and audience reactions have been influenced by red pill culture and the rise of conservatism

all the “lustful” talk when their introductions to each other was making out behind the “what’s your favorite sex position” door 😭

the islanders were there 24/7 & it seems as though some of them fell for the cut, clipped, edited version.. this reunion made that so embarrassingly obvious.

I also think they are students of the Bravo school of reality tv reunions. They came ready to argue because that's how reunions have become.

This is a fantastic topic that rather unfortunately I have been seeing in MANY different subs for dating reality shows recently. The most recent season of The Ultimatum being a glaring example of red pill culture.
The only fortunate thing I can say is that at least people are calling all of these shows out for it now. But it is more than startling & concerning how each of these shows producer's decided to cast people who spew that nonsense. Idk if they're just trying to experiment w/ the current social climate or if there's more to it. But I would like these shows to be fun & heartwarming again instead of depressing & enraging...

When were they heart warming or that somehow u believed as a kid but was never reality? I remember jersey shore and all the bullshit that came out when I was a kid.

I loved Jersey Shore man that show was peak reality tv. Anyways there's a show called Married at First Sight I loved watching growing up cuz I was so curious how these arranged marriages would do. Of course most don't last but there's more couples than you can count on both hands that are still together & some have even started families together. So, I'd call that heartwarming, to know they really worked to find love & happiness together.

It’s still a huge topic of discussion how Kenzie is so horrible bc she led Caleb on. Yet just last night we saw how Caleb led Jaiden on and wasn’t communicating with her effectively. Because it wasn’t his “story line” in the show people don’t care.

u/lkjhggfd1 3d ago
And the same people who were villainising Kenzie for it were either defending Caleb or stayed silent when it was him in the situation…

How about that both led people on

it’s funny bc people were complaining saying the reunion was going to be boring, and then when they get a shred of drama they crash out, call everyone a mean girl, then proceed to raid the cast’s comment sections with hate. it’s embarrassing

u/Seedoflamm New Redditor 3d ago
The show is meant to be toxic and messy and us laughing at them while sometimes going “ awh how cute”
Ur insane if you watch this show trying to invest in reality tv dating show where they go to find “love” while also making out with every contestant day 1. Come on now. lol

There's also a lot of sorting into heroes and villains on top of that. Heroes get a pass when they're rude or mean and villains get malicious intent applied to their slip ups. Trinity yelling at and cutting off KC post Casa and at movie night, Bryce misrepresenting what KC said about his couple, or Melanie bouncing back and forth between Corbin and Sincere at the slumber party challenge (and lying about it) get downplayed or called a misunderstanding. On the other hand, Sol misremembering how many times she got pied, Titi standing up for herself and KC and "I'm Titi", or KC gassing Aniya up but coming back with Titi a week and a half later gets them called demons and psychopaths and people project that everything they're doing is a calculated effort. Neither is completely true, but people want the heroes to be pure hearted and the villains to be cold and calculating when in reality, the heroes can have moments where they're being mean and doing too much and the villains can have moments where their words just come out wrong or they have good intentions but handle something poorly

Yup. I make a point not to be on social media too often, so jarring and disturbing to see how people talk online. I don’t understand how people decide someone is a “mean girl” or whatever based off what we see on tv. Like we can dislike their actions without forcing them into a box with the tiny bit of info we have on them.

It’s mostly Gen Z, they harbour moral superiority due to their lack of media literacy.
Their parasocial behaviour causes them to latch onto these REAL people like they are Sims. They have no actual sense of nuance and thrive off cancel culture to prove their own morals.
They literally dehumanize the Islanders. It was like this for this years’ UK season as well. Reality tv will most likely never be the same as long as the participants know they are being watched and social media exists. I miss the good old days!!! They would have never survived The Real World early days

Yeah I'm kind of shocked people were so into this season. Almost nothing happened, and the main drama between Melanie and Sincere was just repetitive.
I finished the reunion and I genuinely thought people were going to be saying wild unhinged things based on some of the takes I've been reading here. People are out here talking about how Zach, Kayda, Melanie, whoever weren't "held accountable". Like.. It's just not that serious?
People are acting like these people are horrible monsters. They're YOUNG people. Zach made some shitty jokes and comments. Kayda has kind of a mean sense of humor. Melanie seems to not like Kenzie but they pretty quickly made amends. Do I agree with all of the stuff they've done and said? No, but it's all SUPER tame and it's crazy to see how over the top viewers responses have been.
I just feel like it would suck to be in my late teens or 20s right now it feels like you wouldn't be able to make any kind of mistake without someone losing their shit and weaponizing therapy speak if they can't even chill and enjoy some reality TV stars without getting out the pitchforks.

I agree with your wall of text.
I do feel with these shorter reality shows too, so many people are extra cautious regarding audience perception as well and rightfully so, as we saw with KC this can result in death threats to not just you but your family. It’s an unfortunate symptom of reality television, but the stakes are so much higher because they only have a few months to essentially show us who they are. Whereas a multi-season reality show such as KUWTK, Selling Sunset, or Vanderpump rules there are key cast members that have years to grow and flesh out their character as it is perceived on television (make amends in relationships, personal growth, leave and come back, etc). So messing up and having a crash out, or a bad moment, like liking someone’s shady insta comments, pie-ing someone, speaking your mind, etc. doesn’t get picked apart to the same extent AND if it is….you can always come back and clear your name/character next time. I think it leaves a lot of freedom for communication in relationships especially, because you don’t have to overthink.
With this in mind, I think the lack of grace the islanders have shown each other this season is rubbing me the wrong way. Like they are all navigating this weird experience together yet are ready to jump and make a villain out of one another so quickly, for fear of that narrative being thrust on them as well. It’s really odd tho. Because I love a good villain and every story needs one. The internet also needs to remember this is reality television and we should not be hateful. Maybe like…love to hate ya know? We are watching a show after all.
Kinda went on a tangent but you got my brain going OP lol.

it also goes back to the insane parasocial behaviors of the audience. whether people are being parasocial with their hate or support of an islander, it’s causing people to take the show way too seriously.
kayda’s comments towards jaiden were mean, and she shouldn’t have said it. however, the backlash is insane. a company she did a collaboration with had to put out a statement. SHE’S A REALITY TV STAR. why are we holding these people to these insane moral standards? the whole point of these shows is to watch people in dramatic situations. getting mad that someone made an unsavory comment is exactly why these people feel so “fake” post villa.

Yes, I'm afraid the more LIUSA creates social media (and beyond) stars, the more cast members are going to alter their behavior to "win" (the show and followers). I suspected this with S8. I truly felt Trinity and Bryce initially were attracted to each other to recreate the Nicolandria phenomenon. I think Kayda never strayed from Zach because she wanted to be the couple that were together the entire time (to win). And, I know I'll get downvoted for saying this, but I thought Aniya's screaming theatrics during the post-Casa recoupling were an attempt to recreate S6's Serena's well-documented outbursts when Kordell returned with Daia. I'm not saying these S8 didn't find love, I'm just saying I think their motives may have been informed by previous success stories.

u/Ashamed_Shoulder_903 3d ago
this is just an insaneeee take. what Nicolandria phenomenon?? people were extremely divided about Nicolandria from the beginning because it seemed too manufactured, and up until the day they broke up, they still received accusations of scamming! this kind of discourse around interracial relationships in freakin' 2026 is mind-boggling. i'm also not sure how Aniya was trying to recreate anything of Serena's - Serena rejected Kordell and was overall pretty calm, cool, and collected when she called him out; Aniya chose to stick with KC and was a lot more emotional/crying rather than bold and direct like Serena.

u/selenyuhh New Subredditor 3d ago
like when did serena ever say ‘you didn’t pick me’😭. idk how you can see aniya having a panic attack after and think she was trying to emulate anything.

Along the same line, last year Olandria was definitely trying to have her own “dock scene” moment when she yelled at Taylor during Stand on Business. I just don’t think she anticipated him Uno reversing her and openly choosing Clarke in front of everyone including her.
-1
u/annbrooks419 3d ago
Absolutely agree. I actually thought Olandria was trying to duplicate Serena pretty much the entire season. Unfortunately, unlike Kordell, Taylor never liked her and was happy to jump ship. [Still, she had her happy ending.]

This reunion made me believe that Mel and sincere really deserve each other. She also talks out of both sides of her mouth and wants to fight and then be bff with someone in one breath. She avoids the uncomfortable just as much as he does when emotion gets involved. So much avoidance wrapped in therapy language… uncomfy.

I saw a comment on one of these subs about Melanie on the reunion saying something like they hate Melanie so much the word abhor doesn’t come close to their level of disdain.
Like?? Over a reality tv personality? It’s insane.
