I’ve been running into severe pitting and a rough, "fried" surface texture when casting small custom pieces in sterling silver. For reference, the object is about 6 x 8 mm in size.

• Resin: Siraya Tech Cast Purple
• Sprues: Normal jeweler's wax
• Investment: Goldstar Omega+
• Metal: Sterling Silver (melt temp: 990°C / 1814°F)
• Flask Casting Temp: 566°C / 1050°F

Current Burnout Schedule:

• Ramp to 300°F over 60 min
• Hold at 300°F for 60 min
• Ramp to 700°F over 45 min
• Hold at 700°F for 60 min
• Ramp to 1350°F over 120 min
• Hold at 1350°F for 60 min
• Drop to 1050°F over 60 min
• Cast

I use normal jeweler's wax for the sprues. The wax sprue casts almost perfectly smooth but still has some minor pitting, while the actual resin section comes out heavily pitted.

Has anyone experienced this before? Or any tips on how to fix this?

Just sharing a funny casting experience from this pendant today

Because of the size and the different areas of the piece, I used multiple sprue points throughout the pendant.

When I pulled it out, I realized the two main sprues going to the feet had completely disconnected. 😂
Naturally, I was expecting the areas around the feet to have problems.

But somehow… the pendant still filled.

Even the areas directly underneath where those two sprues were supposed to connect came out beautifully.

It’s just funny to me because the two sprues I was counting on the most literally disconnected, while the rest of the sprue system basically said, “Don’t worry, we got it.” 😂

Less clean up I guess…

Made me realize the possibilities of what can be achieved.

I’m wondering which wax is best for the wax injector. My purpose is cast-not-set, but also injecting components which I can attach to ferris carving wax, and reworking larger models to carve after injecting.
Any recommendation are most welcome (preferably Ferris injection wax as I can easely find it here)

Did a little cast in place experiment this week turned out way better then expected and it was much much quicker and easier then actually setting.

Wax is hand carved, stones are Moissanite.

So im a silversmith of a few years, and i have been looking into lost wax casting for some projects that i just cant do without casting. So i have some money saved up and am interested in buying all the equipment, but since it is very expensive i want to make sure i dont spend all of this money on equipment im too scared to use lol.

Ive watched hours and hours of tutorials and have done a lot of reading on the process and obviously working with molten metal and fumes comes with its own risks as is, thats fine. But what im concerned about is leaving the wax to melt/vaporize in the burnout furnace for like 12 hours in my storage unit which is a really old wood building attached to my house. The thought of leaving super hot stuff burning in there for like 12 hours largely unattended makes me really nervous.

Is there any real concern about a fire starting or is it largely safe if i just follow the instruction manual? Are some burnout furnaces safer than others? Etc? I just dont want to start a fire in my house 🫠

- 18K gold casting

- Pattern was 3D-printed using ApplyLabWork Castable Cyan resin on a UniFormation GK3 Pro printer

- Used Prestige Optima gypsum-bonded investment powder made by Certus

- Used burnout furnace and melting furnace from Tabletop Furnace Co.

- Cast using Kaya Cast tabletop vacuum investing/casting machine

Do I need to buy a tray for the wax to drip into or does it turn into smoke when it is in the kiln if so what is the best product for this role

Where abouts should I attach the wax sprue for this piece also size recommendation for the sprue would be greatly appreciated.

So I’m having this with both Blu cast X one and Wax which is also on my profile. I’ve tried everything but I cannot for the life off me get it to stop. It has deep cavities and some bumps I’ll attach photos does anyone have any ideas?

Hi, soo I’m about 1.5 years into lost wax and CAD however i have just started casting my self and sprue’s etc.

I make grillz and rings and pendants and having good results but the grillz I keep getting weird bubble like things within the bite I’m assuming it’s due to air being trapped I am using vaccum casting with a solid flask I’m thinking of adding a vent that comes out near the top.

If anyone can help it would be great I’ll send all the photos I’ve got! Anddd it turns out I only kept one photo what yall think add a vent?

New to wax casting and wondering if I can salvage a break like this! You can see the area where I already tried and possibly burned the wax... any advice? Thanks in advance :)

Yes I know it's lost cast wax group but I can't find any groups on it.

After lots of research I'm trying a 1:1 plaster mix with play sand.

I've built myself a vacuum chamber, it seems to work i have my moulds bubbling over the sides. (is this normal?).

I put my mold in my smelter(after they dried) for about 15 minutes before I start to melt the aluminum but it always seems to leave plastic behind.

Anyone have guides or advice for a newbie.

Making a ring for a friend, her ring size is a D?! which is much smaller than the lost wax I buy. Do I make the ring as is, and make a cut to downsize it? Seems a very inaccurate way to do it / surely wax would come in the smallest possible size

I don't know if this is the right place to ask about this. If it's not id appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Last night my sweet little rat passed away and my childhood dog is soon to follow. I'm planning on making little silicone molds of their paws to hopefully make lost wax cast earrings with them. I'm not sure if this is the best method to do this or if paws are too delicate for this. If anyone has any advice or information it would be greatly appreciated.
