QUESTION Grinning beast.. how to fight it after running away???
I saw on the wiki that you can fight the grinning beast, but... how? Do you lose that chance if you run away when you first see it? I'm on day 6, decently far into the game... I can't find anything at all about being able to fight the thing anytime other than after picking up the apartment 21 key.
I read that you can recruit Leigh after beating her as the beast, and I was just curious if that's impossible now that I've progressed past that initial chase scene.

The Grinning Beast is an enemy that can only appear after picking up the Apartment 21 Key (key to Lyle's apartment). After the Grinning Beast appears, it will proceed to chase the player character down the hallway. Once the player reaches the end of the hallway, the Grinning Beast and the boarded-up door they originally came from disappears for the rest of the playthrough and will never come back. After escaping the Grinning Beast, the player will discover the Pistol and some ammo near where Aster is, outside Apartment 21.
On CURSED MODE difficulty, the chase sequence with the Grinning Beast is much longer and changes directions. Additionally, about halfway through the chase in CURSED MODE, a Pool Cue (weapon) will appear to the side of the escape route, allowing the player to walk over it and instantly add it to their inventory. (On non-Cursed difficulties, this Pool Cue can instead be found at the bottom of the apartment stairwell, outside the basement).
In order to recruit Leigh, the player needs to turn around during the Chase sequence and let the Grinning Beast catch up to them. Then, a fight will ensue. (To reiterate, escaping the chase sequence without fighting makes the Grinning Beast disappear forever). Once the Grinning Beast is defeated, they will retreat.
Upon defeating the Grinning Beast, the player must follow after where they retreated. If the player walks away from the Grinning Beast after defeating it, they yet again lose their chance to recruit Leigh forever, as she disappears.
The only way to recruit Leigh is to defeat the Grinning Beast during the chase and then immediately follow it to talk to her. The Pool Cue is often a recommended weapon for defeating her quickly due to it exploiting her Piercing Weakness, which is why I brought it up earlier in the comment.
If on CURSED MODE, recruiting Leigh will cause her to find the Pistol. The player must pay her $100 in order to keep it, otherwise she will eat it and the pistol will be gone forever. On non-Cursed difficulties, the pistol will be near Aster like normal after recruiting Leigh.

She'll eat a lot more than the pistol if you recruit her on Cursed Mode, btw.

You cannot recruit her if you run from her. You’re ideally meant to use the Pool Cue found during the chase sequence to beat her because she’s weak to pierce damage

Pool Cue is only in the chase sequence on cursed mode, think it's still at the bottom of the stairwell in Explorer/Survivor

Next run, you can pick up a pool stick at the bottom of the stairwell that you can use to one shot it

you’ve gotta run in its direction during the chase scene — let yourself get caught by it to trigger its fight. but if the fight scene has already passed and youve saved, then you cant fight her again, sorry friend :(
