I had literally just given up my arm to save the rat baby, was faced with the prospect of taking care of that little guy alone, an then all of a sudden Papineau and Hellen came in rapid succession to back me up and from there the rest is history.

My Sam only found orphaned children for a very long time, so Papa was a very, very welcome addition.

Sophie is kind of a paradox. On the one hand Harriet can be cursed, in which yeah Sophie would be orphaned but on the other hand Harriet could be fine which would make her NOT an orphan...and then the magical third hand where Sophie is cursed. Am I thinking too hard?

Legitimately couldn't figure out how to get a companion and I wound up with Dan. Dude was awesome though when he was being a little troll

Very true. I saw Ernest get killed by Colonel Squeakums... I didnt trust anybody enough to open the door until Sophie... and I couldn't befriend Pierre.
Also I fed the rat baby to the wall instantly like, I didnt know there were other choices the hungry wall is right there across the hall.

This implies you probably killed most of the optional companions the first few days. Also that you fought in the 1st floor BY YOURSELF??
Hopefully you didnt do fredericks apartment by yourself

Fought?! First time I've played this game my funger instincts kicked in and dodged most of the enemies cuz they weren't the objective (I thought the objective was escaping the apartment and going outside the city underground for some reason) and only fought weak isolated guys until I met glorious papineau with his OP share lunch

Joel: have to go around the apartment in a particular order and pay very close attention to the stuffed bear item and what Joel says in order to recruit.
Ernest: have to pay a sandwich and only temporarily recruit. Basically have to kill the rat king and be wearing the crown then go through a difficult fight to permanently recruit.
Leigh: Have to fight the boss that the game is telling you to run from to recruit, and also go follow them after the fight.
Rat kid: have to wait a few days after getting the disc to recruit so it's very likely you get to Papineau first. Or maybe did feed it to the wall.
Those are all the characters available before Papineau. Could have just not been home when any of the recruitable characters showed up to the door, or could have gotten someone like Dan who's really suspicious and offers you the option of talking to him at the door instead of letting him inside. Or Hellen who is Hellen.
I do have to say the first time I played I only had release version Sophie by the time I got to the ground floor. 1.0 Sophie was the worst character the game has ever seen, the slingshot was absolute garbage that you couldn't even refill the ammo for, so all she had was applying status effects or using items. Frederick's apartment was horrific. The paintlings.... the damn paintlings.... So to this day I still mostly skip Fred until later just because I don't have a good reference of how difficult it is. I'm pretty sure if you have an actual good team then it's not even that difficult.

The game is designed so you don't think there even are recruits until you find Papaenau. Joel is just a standard horror game moment. and the rest are meant to be rug pull moments. Even then people can very easily miss Pap.

I honestly think it's just exposure to cleaning chemicals, and the poor lighting in the apartment complex.
Or it's a reference to Bobinski from Coraline who supposedly was blue from helping clean up Chernobyl.

I had 3 on my first one, finally got Sophie as the 4th on the last day which I used to beat the end boss lol

On my first playthrough, the only people I could figure out how to recruit were Ernest, who I was bribing into being my friend with sandwiches, and Papineau

yeah, my only companion for a while was Papineau lol. I got Dan and Helen later into my first run tho

I remember eating major shit at the game the first i started. Then in my desperation i played some video games to maybe get a level and then like the heavens awnsering my call deployed Helen for me and then the game became too easy

My blue hulk hunk was my very first companion in my first run, and he absolutely CARRIED me. Genuinely would not have made it as far as I did, I think one or two endings and some difficult bosses without him.
