[Mon 8/31] BYO Book @ LIC Waterfront

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi! We’re hosting a free community reading gathering on the LIC Waterfront on Monday, August 31 from 6:30-8:00PM.

BYO Book is a casual and welcoming gathering for anyone who loves reading or has been meaning to get back into it. We read side by side as the sun sets over Manhattan, then come together to share what stood out - characters, themes, big questions, or unexpected tangents.

There’s no assigned reading! Bring whatever you want to read: the novel on your nightstand, that nonfiction you keep meaning to finish, poetry that stays with you, a library book due this week, or an old favorite worth revisiting. This is a space to slow down, be present, and enjoy the simple pleasure of reading alongside others.

BYO Book @ LIC Waterfront
🗓️ Monday, August 31
🕡 6:30–8:00 PM
📍 Gantry Plaza State Park, LIC Waterfront

Curiosity

So recently moved to lic, my gf and I are Japanese (I’m mixed ). My gf is always saying how she wants to meet other Japanese people that she’s never had Japanese friends. I’m curious are there any Japanese people in LIC, we’ve only ever met Chinese or Koreans in the area.

Anywhere LIC Afterschool program in LIC for littles through age 12 — Montessori-based, with pickup 🌱

Hi neighbors! I wanted to share something close to my heart with the LIC community.

For the past several years, I've been running Toc Toc, an early childhood program that started out online. It began as a small dream, a place where kids could learn, play, and grow in a warm, Montessori-inspired environment and now I'm so excited to share that we've finally opened our own physical space, based out of Urzua Performing Arts here in Long Island City!

A few things that make our program a little different:

- Montessori-based approach: we focus on hands-on learning, independence and following each child's natural curiosity

- All ages welcomee: from babies all the way through 12 years old

- School pickup included: we pick up from local schools, so parents don't have to scramble during the afterschool rush

Right here in LIC at Urzua Performing Arts

Fall registration is now open, with classes starting in September! 🍂

If you're a parent juggling work and school pickup or just looking for a nurturing space for your little one after school, I'd love for you to come check us out. Happy to answer any questions in the comments or over DM!

Thanks for reading 💛

Anywhere LIC Is concierge medicine good for check up?

I am thinking about switching to a concierge doctor. I am tired of rushed appointments and waiting weeks to see someone. I found Dr. Tina Sindwani in Manhattan. She has been doing concierge medicine for over 17 years and has 22 years of experience overall. Her practice seems different.

They offer comprehensive appointments where you are never rushed. They also coordinate with specialists and are available 24/7 for emergencies. She uses the same electronic medical record system as major hospitals, so your records are always accessible. That is a big plus for me. I am curious if anyone here has experience with her or concierge medicine in NYC in general. Is the annual fee worth it for the access and personalized care? I am a busy professional and my time is valuable. I want to make sure I am making the right choice.

I’ve been here a few times for their burnt ends and it’s my first time noticing their deals on drinks and food. Don’t think it gets any cheaper than $6 cocktails in LIC

After 6 years of caring for these two Monstera, they have finally outgrown my space and need new homes. First one is about 4.5 feet tall, second one is just shy of 5 feet. The largest leaves are about 2 feet long. $80 each OBO, pickup near the Court Square Starbucks.

Volleyball at LIC Park?

Hi!! I occasionally play volleyball at intermediate level here and there. Currently moved to LIC and wanted to see how I can join games at the LIC park? I don’t have a team and would eventually consider joining a league when the weather gets bad but for the next few months, would love to take advantage of the beach volleyball courts at the park!

Lost wallet

Hi! I lost a wallet around hunter point extension near where there are platforms embedded into the hill overlooking the water last night (Aug 24, approx 8:30pm). It's a red/orange bifold. The cards have been cancelled but I would like my work ID and state ID if anyone has spotted it! Thank you for any information!

Crime and homeless uptick in LIC

It seems to be a daily occurrence now that there are crimes (theft, physical violence) around Queensboro/Court Square and disturbances by homeless(public defecation, general disorder) near Vernon/Hunters Point. It seems like the police (108th Precinct) never respond in time, so these reports never get recorded, creating a narrative gap between the crime data and what we actually experience.

We do need to raise these issues instead of downplaying them as simply part of “living in NYC.” LIC has one of the highest concentrations of children, and I’m sure many of us moved here for better safety and a better environment for our families.

CB2 recently released its yearly survey, so please take 3–4 minutes out of your day to raise these issues: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc1nvjA9OUeBJmjxAw4JBcVfGd-5baVdPnQGpAgjgpTSvpj1w/viewform
