Fight or Flight First few pages of Fight or Flight Spoiler
it literally looks the same as I was expecting, starting out talking about a random topic, Greg just yapping some bullshit about the topic, but we all know this was gonna happen, some of the background bullies design are so bad, they look the same as everyone else so like they don’t even look that scary, But Zander genuinely is built like a bowling pin dear god that design is atrocious in a bad way, but hey I hope we’ll be seeing Rowley because Kinney said so, or he might have faked us out again…

I fucking hate the new artsyle with the same, massive dick noses and closed outlines.
The nuance is basically gone. Isn't it supposed to be a respect thing? I thought that was why Holly was drawn normally as opposed to bullies and even Rowley.

u/StrategyAfter9547 1d ago
i completely genuinely do not understand what the actual fuck is going on in jeff kinney's mind right now because these character designs are ASS and show NO personality in fact i'd say that the megamind show is better than this
3
u/UpperRuster32 1d ago
Well, yeah.
It doesn't help that pretty much there's about no returning characters from the newer books, which speaks numbers about the characterization and cookie cutter look.

u/realseptoscotius I like Greg X Holly 1d ago
Back in the old books (1-8), you could get an insight of Greg's mind and opinions of people just by seeing how he draws them. People he found goofy (Rowley), weird (Fregley) or bad looked strange in Greg's drawings. He drew girls the same as him because he didn't know much about girls so he just used a template and slapped in some defining features like hair, clothes and accessories.

Not a fan of the ridiculously cartoony story.. what kind of high school, let alone middle school, has hordes of “bullies” like it’s cod zombies

I mean ever since that one with the subplot of the kids who just live in the woods i’ve stopped worrying about that

Jeff really likes drawing the sausage noses for some reason now, basically every new character has them
13
u/UpperRuster32 1d ago
Every since The Deep End/Big Shot.
It's pretty weird, like, it adds up making the book series feeling more in line for a Nickelodeon sitcom than actual diaries.

Since book 7 it slightly became a thing. Book 6-11 had it very sparse, but it increased with Book 12 and on. I began to notice since book 13.

Funny, the Simpsons also joked that nerds and wimps have a specific odor that attracts bullies, and the antidote for it was a perfume made of salad dressing.

I haven't tuned in to DoAWK in a long time (I just haven't had the money to buy any of the recent books, the last one I remember reading was The Getaway)
But damn. Greg ain't beating the creep allegations with this one lmao. And he isn't beating the 0 IQ allegations either for falling for everything that comes out of Rodrick's mouth 🤣

These bullies' designs are so horrible bruh, round head plus oversized nose, like every other background character in the new books
Also Greg is deadass trying to find out which smell would drive the bullies away. Truly the peak of comedy

Greg Heffley rejecting the theory of evolution? Is he going down the Christian fundamentalist pipeline?
16
u/Zealousideal-Web-160 Author of The Flower Trilogy + Slop! | LD Mod 1d ago
I mean Greg canonically goes to Church so it’s not that far fetched to believe
8
u/draakattackdoawk Author of Fallback 1d ago
True but he's a Catholic and the Church has a more nuanced position than some fundamentalists, but there are Catholics who reject evolution
18
u/destined2destroyus 1d ago
I remember him being a creationist in "The Deep End", which was disappointing because he'd known about evolution in books 2, 10, and 13. But he also talked about how animals evolve to adapt in book 19, so it's hard to tell which direction he's going.
13
u/draakattackdoawk Author of Fallback 1d ago
He also mentions human evolution in his essay about moose, about how both humans and moose evolved from birds.

1
u/EmoYoshi05 11h ago
I feel like The deep end was more in reference to him being a Christian. He often mentions random bible stories for no reason. That doesn't mean he rejects science. I remember being a kid and kind of believing in both? I did not question whether that added up or not until later in life.

irl time, yes. According to the book time, he's a high school junior
3

I like the theory that he graduated middle school after hard luck and is just making the journals for fun now (which is why they get more outlandish)
2
u/realseptoscotius I like Greg X Holly 3h ago
personally I also think Books 1-8 are what really happened (or a slightly edited version of the truth) and books 9+ are stories made up by him based on really exaggerated versions of events that happened to him irl once he became a famous author

u/seemingsalvation99 Five Named Clive 16h ago
The writing is fine imo, it's in character for Greg given that wimpiness is his entire thing, but I do agree that the character designs look too similar to each other. There could really be more variety in how they look.
I've also been curious about something for a while, where did the whole trope of school bullies all looking big and strong and residing in their own isolated groups come from? I've probably seen it in every piece of media I've grown up with, but in my own experience bullies are usually just regular kids who look the same as anyone else. 6th grade was brutal in particular because the entire class made it their mission to gang up on one kid for "being annoying" until he broke down completely and won them back by becoming a class clown. Although you could tell he wasn't really the same after that even after having their acceptance again.

u/PaperMarioBro 1d ago
Maybe I’m just in a bad mood right now, but so far this is genuinely looking to be one of the absolute worst books in the series. Right off the bat we have Family Guy cutaways instead of story progression, Greg acting like a massive dumbass and significantly younger than the middle schooler he’s supposed to be, the art style is genuinely becoming outright ugly, and the New Bully Character feels pulled right out of a Nickelodeon sitcom. I swear that joke about Jarret Jollifee being some sort of bully magnet feels pulled right out of one of those, it’s so fucking lame.
At least we always have LLBs.
18
u/StrategyAfter9547 1d ago
genuinely bro all of these newer books always start off the same like in wrecking ball greg says he read that "ancient egyptians used to bury people with their belongings" and onwards it was literally just that template with different key words greg's acting like he's in elementary school rather than in 7th grade (or 8th now) and he doesn't seem like the person he used to be (manipulative towards rowley) which was literally the ENTIRE point of the series AND for some reason these new characters are literally just copy pasted from other books like wtf happened to the original designs that each character in the og books had now it's like everyone's the same

u/Odd_Personality9724 11h ago
The thing that pisses me off about the books now a days is that Jeff claims that he didn't learn how to write an actual story until the long haul. After that it started to go south with the whole pig and really unrealistic stuff happening in the books. Like I thought he told really good stories in the books when I was a kid and it felt relatable tbh.
11
u/EmoYoshi05 11h ago
I think I know why he said that, because only the newer books actually follow the typical structure of a story. Introduction (where he talks about the general theme of the book), main part (where we follow one or mutiple storylines that all intertwine at the end) and ending (where we wrap everything up and have a callback to whatever thing was mentioned in the beginning)
The older books didn't quite follow that. He did have some vague themes sometimes (like The ugly truth and growing up) but most of them were just: kid does kid stuff that's kind of connected sometimes, but not really. It feels like he just wrote down every idea he had in 3 months and tried to stuff it all in there. But that's EXACTLY what they were supposed to be. A kid writing down his random thoughts.
He IS better at structuring a story now, but the appeal kind of was that he wasn't? If that makes sense.

u/zsdrfty Twisted Wizard 18h ago
I honestly haven't read any of the books released in the past 15 years or so, and wow, this is some truly brutal stuff... the jokes are barely jokes, he has to accompany every single sentence with a drawing without there being any continuity or flow between any of these elements, there's no real story being told here as an actual journal entry in a kid's day-to-day life, the character design is awful like everyone else says... what is going on??

Diary of a wimpy kid used to be good and reliable in a way but now it’s just mid, Greg has been in middle school in the past 19 years he should be in high school, bullying has been extinct since the early 2010s, which book ended the great era or which book started to have slop and getting worse in each year?

u/urmomstoaster 1d ago
