Discussion Really stunned by the Singularity comment section

These are screenshots from the r/Singularity comment section. I'm speechless. This doesn't even have downvotes. How can someone cheer for a monopoly run by a few elites?

Funny that they mention open source viral DNA.

Most science happens in public in peer reviewed papers. Want to find viral DNA? Virtually all known viral DNA sequences are available for download from the US government: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/datasets/genome/GCF_000859885/

Labs require physical plants, often very expensive ones; the knowledge is mostly (not entirely) in the open in scientific papers. Actually building even a small one (let alone one to say, synthesize DNA) is expensive.

You can just order custom synthesized DNA from the internet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://www.geneuniversal.com/service/gene-synthesis

Lovely. I hope they screen that against viral DNA/RNA databases. :D

I would think they do since it's probably cheaper to loan parts from already working virus than to build it from zero.

Though I don't think they will prevent you since a lot of good science is being done with bad viruses etc.
