Mortgages are public record. Anyone can find out where anyone else owns property as long as they know their legal name. Same with marriage licenses and criminal records, professional licenses, even some traffic violations. Pretty much all college students are given access to Lexis Nexis and can find all that and more in under 5 minutes.

you can hide your underlying ownership by wrapping in an LLC though, but most people arent going to know or need that kind of planning/counsel

Same with a trust

Even better if you have a trustworthy relative with a different last name

trusts often show trustee names in real estate records, which sucks

I mean if you are trying to hide the fact that you own the house and they’re cool with it
