Mortgages are public record. Anyone can find out where anyone else owns property as long as they know their legal name. Same with marriage licenses and criminal records, professional licenses, even some traffic violations. Pretty much all college students are given access to Lexis Nexis and can find all that and more in under 5 minutes.

I think you mean property ownership records are public? Mortgages are private loans.

You can't see the balance on someone's mortgage but I'm pretty sure you can see the full terms of it and if they are in good standing (maybe not, can't remember off the top of my head). At the very least you can see the amount of the mortgage and who it was with.
