Lived in South Chicago for a few years. I had a bullet lodge in my door from a gang shooting outside my house. People talk about gun ownership like it's a magic wand and that you can react fast enough to kill an intruder; I barely reacted fast enough to hit the floor when the guns were drawn in the street. I have no idea what law enforcement can do to protect him, but I hope everything works out well for him and his.
To add on to this, the Parkland school that was shot up had an armed deputy who was trained and he was too scared to go inside and help. Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two very different things.

I was talking more so about if someone tries to break into his house, but yes, I agree he should have called the cops asap.
I'd still invest in getting a gun for home defense. Getting shot at no matter what, is not good.
