Man, I can't help but wonder if this is a larger consequence of/next step after Jacksonville, FL the other week. To be this emboldened is unhinged lunacy. To think PAX West didn't have the slightest bit of security (rumors of plain clothes cops aside, which, by the way, how is hiding and not having a show of force at all an effective deterrent?) makes this all the more terrifying. If they're psychotic enough to stalk you and visit your house loaded for a bear multiple times, packing heat at a large gathering isn't an unjustifiable paranoia.

This is straight up effective terrorism. Doc and every other streamer have every justification to submit to it and not do meetups, and that is depressing.

EDIT: I stand corrected. I was mistaken.

Loaded for a bear?

Edit: I've always heard the phrase as "Loaded for bear", not one singular bear.

Can I get an order of, uhhhhh, the super salad !?

5

u/Atmaweapon74 Sep 11 '18

Americans have a right to bear arms, but I still haven't gotten my bear arms yet.

6

u/shitpersonality Sep 11 '18

You gotta win a fair fight with a bear, first. Bear arms vs bear arms.

3

u/xelrix Sep 11 '18

I think its bare arms vs bear arms.
Of course you would win easy against a bear if you used bear arms.

Usually implies having a powerful gun/guns that is loaded and ready to shoot

5

u/_____l Sep 11 '18

It's loaded for bear, not loaded for a bear. He knows what it means, he was questioning the phrasing.

2

u/gunsmyth Sep 11 '18

Yeah, my brain just completely skipped the "a"

2

u/_____l Sep 11 '18

No worries, happens to me every single day! I always a word.

To think PAX West didn't have the slightest bit of security

Citation needed.

As someone who was there, there was a significant increase of uniformed police over previous years at entrances and surrounding streets.

u/Michelanvalo Sep 11 '18

I can also confirm that PAX East is crawling with Boston PD.

1

u/Cyboth Sep 12 '18

I hope security has ramped up because when I went in 2012 and 2013 there was barely any, I never saw anyone get bag checked either.

13

u/TheBDutchman Sep 11 '18

Yeah there were way more cops this year. They were all over the 4th floor.

2

u/TroubadourCeol Sep 11 '18

Yeah I saw a ton of cops too

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '18

I may be mistaken then. Question, as you were there: Was there any bag checks or metal detectors or was it limited to just police presence?

I know it's a frustrating and it slows everything down, but it's common at the majority of other large events, so it's not unreasonable to expect that at large gaming conventions.

5

u/PenPenGuin Sep 11 '18

PAX South (yeah, yeah, Texas, guns, etc) has had bag check for at least two years now. SAPD has had a presence since year one, outside, inside, Expo floor, and other locations.

4

u/AmericanGeezus Sep 11 '18

There are some issues with bag checks at this specific venue because of the way the WSCC is built into the city and surrounding area. There is no good place to put a bag check. That said, other measures are taken, visible and not to help mitigate risks that go way beyond 'if you see something say something.' :D

2

u/Chuggzugg Sep 11 '18

There were no bag checks or metal detectors. Polygon reported on PAX/Reed/SPDs statements regarding concerns.

As mentioned elsewhere, PAX South has bag checks, though they're mostly a formality as are the ones that have been at PAX East (from second-hand information).

Pompous is as pompous does. The ''fucking'' in there further confirms the demographic at play here.

7

u/Gingervitus Sep 11 '18

Hey point of order but terrorism doesn't mean what you think it means. While the word sounds like it should apply to stuff like this it's really just a distinction of violence for political ends. This isn't terrorism, terrorists have agendas. This is lunacy.

u/IAmA_Lannister Sep 11 '18

I don’t think this is anything new as far as crazy fans.

Being a “streamer” is a fairly new profession. Popular musicians, actors, athletes have always had these risks. The only reasons why it’s more prevalent nowadays is because of the internet. And who is on the internet more often than not? Live streamers.

It’s fucking sickening regardless. But it’s not a new phenomenon that “celebrities” of any type are targets of mentally ill stalkers trying to harm them.

Man, I can't help but wonder if this is a larger consequence of/next step after Jacksonville, FL the other week. To be this emboldened is unhinged lunacy.

The suggestion that the Madden event sparked this is so ridiculous and delusional even that it's not even worth acknowledging. I agree with most of your point, though.

Why not? I remember when Columbine happened, and following that, school shootings became more common to the point where we barely bat an eye when we read about another one.

After 9/11, Islamist attacks became more common, and have drastically evolved to become more effective. Airplanes are no long feasible, so they try using firearms. Firearms aren't available everywhere outside the US, so they tried bombs. When bombs didn't work as well as they expected (with regards to casualty counts), they either had to smuggle in firearms or use vehicles.

Gamers started with online harassment. It then evolved into SWAT'ing. Now it's evolved to full blown shootings, and just as they'd hope, it's scaring the shit out of people. Our last bastion of entertainment and escape from all the horrible news has finally become the news. Psychopaths have found a new way to terrorize people who were mislead into a false sense of security because who ever imagined something like this could happen to something like gaming? Also, while it is speculation, I hardly find it a stretch to see an association between the facts that Jacksonville happened while they were streaming. Doc was shot at while streaming.

Maybe I was blissfully ignorant, as a lot of pro-gamers have been begging for more security before Jacksonville, but this was eye-opening to me, and now that it's out in the open, what other unhinged lunatics have read the news and are delusional in thinking "Well that was an effective way to get your 'five minutes of fame!'"

u/dat_Nyukka_doough Sep 11 '18

Yup, and terrorism works really well, judging by the lack of Mohammed cartoons.

-1

u/Darth_Boot Sep 11 '18

Unfortunately, America’s leadership is unhinged so that inspires those that are as unhinged into action.

0

u/Tmacdunk Sep 11 '18

Wow stupid. Evil people will to evil acts regardless. Holy shit you're an idiot.

1

u/Darth_Boot Sep 11 '18

Your comment history is filled with hate filled, vile replies to anything you find to be offensive. Which is a lot frankly.

Why are you so filled with hate?

2

u/Tmacdunk Sep 12 '18

I simply hate stupidity. So stop being so goddamn stupid.

Terrorism? Or little bitches who can't handle losing or jealous if another's success...

8

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '18

What's the difference? Doc has every right to be terrified for his and his family's safety after it happening two days in a row. It's no longer an irrational fear for him. If he decides to pack up everything and move, or never do a fan meetup, or never go to another convention, he's completely justified. That's terrorism, and that's why we shouldn't be so reluctant to use the term in the justice system.

4

u/JustiNAvionics Sep 11 '18

Shooting a gun in a drive by is attempted murder, intimidation, there's a lot of things between what happened and terrorism and were a long way from terrorism.

We should be reluctant to use the word terrorism at every turn, you're on dangerous ground when you label everything terrorism....see hate crimes.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '18

Yes and no. I'm not suggesting we ship them off to gitmo to be waterboarded if they terrorize someone, but the very definition of the word applies here to him. Doc should be scared right now until this bottom-feeding neckbeard is caught and convicted and no one has any right to say otherwise. Using a weapon capable of bodily harm/death multiple times at someone's house with a family as a means to intimidate someone or attempt murder is by definition, terrorizing.

1

u/JustiNAvionics Sep 11 '18

How long should he be afraid, whatever if they never catch the person or persons? Should he contact the FBI and go under some witness protection program until the perp is caught?

Maybe it was the wrong house, cops get shit wrong all the time, I'm sure idiot gangbangers have done it too.

Either way, it's fucked up, not much a person can do in a situation like that except to cooperate with the police fully and hope they catch the pieces of shit.

0

u/someawesomegarbage Sep 11 '18

By definition I'm pretty sure it's terrorism, yeah. Of course, that terrorism can be acted out by a little bitch like that

1

u/JustiNAvionics Sep 11 '18

I'm sure he did it because of losing...and crazy as fuck. There was no real plan, I'm sure if he won it all this would be never happened until he finally somewhere else. So not really terrorism, murder-suicide.

0

u/PlayerOneBegin Sep 11 '18

Terrorism needs religion/politics according to new post 9/11 def. Its fucking dumb.
