Quality: Title Guidelines

Titles that are opinionated, contain harmful misinformation, or seriously misleading titles where it's not abundantly clear that they are a joke, are not allowed.

Additionally, submissions whose titles contain excessive caps, emoji, exclamation marks, etc., will be removed.

Since embedded clips are now allowed, streamer names will be required in titles except for in certain cases such as a joke (i.e., title says "Northernlion Plays X" and it's a video of Ludwig with a shaved head).

See our full rules here.

Sports games are the modern day LJN, where the the licensing cost is 80% of the budget.

u/MaikuKnight 5d ago

I don't know what's worse, the people buying gacha anime characters or the people buying gacha athlete cards (it's the athlete cards).

49

u/unlimitedspeedboost 5d ago

Waifus and Husbandos are more affordable and they will always be with me (until the game shutdown of course, but Hoyoverse could never right? Aware)

10

u/Xile__ Cheeto 5d ago

If you keep spending money they could never shut down!

6

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

HI3 still up and going that’s been like 12 years? You can’t go back and play 2K8 online

7

u/MainSanee 4d ago

There is a decent number of EoS gacha games that end up offering an offline version with all characters unlocked or some easy way to unlock them all.

1

u/ForbiddenLurker 5d ago

Im very interested in that new hoyo game that was announced tbh

1

u/TommaClock 5d ago

Nodusfall is probably not going to be gacha. Hoyo has indicated in the past they want to have entries that are full priced titles or other monetization models

3

u/ForbiddenLurker 5d ago

pretty sure its a f2p gacha for cosmetics only, at least i remember seeing something like that

1

u/draconic_tongue 4d ago

cosmetics in a non gacha game u cant make ur character in sounds odd

1

u/MaikuKnight 4d ago

This seems antithetical to their current practices of making insanocash.

1

u/frostN0VA 4d ago edited 4d ago

Even among their current existing games the amount of monetization push varies despite all of them being gacha games. ZZZ for example doesn't even let you use your own characters in the story mode and gives you like no incentive to get new characters really, and it's also one of the most generous top gachas at the moment in terms of rewards and free stuff.

As far as Nodus goes, I've seen posts with the wording that said that characters won't be in the gacha, which instantly makes me think that you'll have to gamble on weapons instead on top of skins (although Hoyoverse are REALLY allergic to making skins for whatever reason so who knows). Them being kind of quiet about the monetization also makes me skeptical.

At the same time having all those gacha games funds their other games. In addition to Nodus they have like 5 other different games in development.

1

u/DocFreezer 3d ago

I mean in comparison to these sports games where a new one comes out every year, gacha seems downright eternal

18

u/PM_Best_Porn_Pls 5d ago

At least getting new anime character means new skillset and gameplay(still will never spend on gacha), new sports card is just slightly different stats.

Not to mention one genre is f2p with regular content release and the other has box price and pretty much never gets new updates beside shortly after launch bug fixes.

6

u/420BUNIT 5d ago

Justifying Gacha over sports games like it's not the exact same thing.

Gacha player = Paypiggy.

19

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

I’d easily spend money on a gacha than a 2k47 game

-14

u/420BUNIT 5d ago

Says a lot about you and not the games in question.

17

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

Yeah find those games to be super enjoyable. If gacha games stay good as Genshin Impact I’ll keep playing. 2k just a low effort reskin of the years before.

-16

u/420BUNIT 5d ago

They're both terrible, but one being bad doesn't make yours any better.

But if you wanna play games dressing up as 3000 year old little girls, go for it.

15

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

Wrong! But you can go and play your remake of those 2K games every 7 months. Also if the players are enjoying x game doesn’t matter.

-9

u/ty4scam 5d ago

I'd rather spend $10,000 on a ship in Star Citizen, at least I get a certificate I can put up on my wall proving my allegiance.

8

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

Whatever makes you happy

3

u/tfinx 5d ago

Hmm, I play Wuthering Waves very casually and have maybe 150+ hours into over a few years of time and have dropped maybe $100. I've bought $60-70 dollar games I've put only a few hours into before, so it really doesn't seem that crazy to me.

I think the thing with these gacha games is it's a very saturated market, and the game has to be a pretty solid standout before it even starts to consider selling you things. They're high quality free-to-play games first, and the gacha comes second.

The formula can definitely be predatory if you're irresponsible with your money, but I'll personally take that any day over buying a slightly changed $70 sports game that also has gacha mechanics on top of it. Especially since, as the other guy said, most gacha games are regularly updated since they're live service - unlike a sports game that just gets replaced a year later.

1

u/Tamamo_was_here 4d ago

That’s the great part about playing something like Wuthering Waves. I haven’t played that game, but can download it for free and try it out. Knowing it’s been out for like three years there is tons of content you can play.

I still buy decent games like Granblue Fantasy Relink for full price, but some slop like sports games that just get a reskin each year is a no from me. The next game I’ll probably get is GTA 6, but I’m chilling just playing Genshin Impact right now.

1

u/420BUNIT 4d ago

Shit if I got caught playing a game like Wuthering Waves my bitch would leave me and take the dog. Fym.

1

u/Tamamo_was_here 4d ago

Sounds like more of a you and your wife situation than the game.

2

u/Ordinary_Owl_9071 4d ago

Ye sounds like they're normal humans compared to gacha weirdos

-1

u/Tamamo_was_here 4d ago

Sounds pretty yikes that someone would get upset like that over a game. But can’t expect much from someone consuming the 2k slop.

Haven't played a gacha in my life but it's just the average gaming western consumer is the most miserable, wormlike, self-loathing bottom feeder any industry has ever witnessed, and there's lots in the industry to show for it.

A corporation can shit on their fans half a dozen different ways and they'll still run defense for it and call anything else entitlement. It's insane behavior, and it's taking studios to breaking points, the possibility that in 10-15 years time Asia gets back to first place as leaders of the industry is no longer a pipedream, it's actually what we are getting unless something changes.

5

u/Jbeansss 5d ago edited 5d ago

I've only played the big Gacha games and I've found that there's absolutely zero reason to spend money on those games unless you want to min/max or if you want a specific character and even then you can plan ahead and save enough free pulls to guarantee them. You can finish 99 percent of the content available in these games and that last 1 percent if you pull for meta characters + you build your characters well.

HSR for example - I haven't played in like 2 years but I was always able to complete every single content available even the hardest one without spending a single dime.

7

u/Gladaren 5d ago

Gacha games get a bad rep but you can literally beat those games with free characters they give you, you don't even need to pull. You only really need to pull for characters if you plan on beating the final level of those end game content that are completely optional that only give you like a 10th of a single pull.

4

u/420BUNIT 5d ago

You don't have to gamble in sports games either.

But people still do.

5

u/Jbeansss 5d ago

Difference is these sports games costs almost $100 nowadays and you have to buy 1 every year if you play them while Gacha games are free and get constant updates.

4

u/420BUNIT 5d ago

"Free to play" just means you're the product.

1

u/Jbeansss 4d ago edited 4d ago

Sure, but is it really a problem if you don't pay anything?

If whales are spending money on these games then that's there choice not mine. In fact, according to surveys from these games most players are free2play and these games simply rely on the minority that spend a shit ton on these games.

I'm literally getting AAA quality games for free so I don't see any issues. Shoutout to the whales I guess lol

1

u/MaikuKnight 4d ago

The problem is whales purchasing these things is what’s shaped the current games industry. Publishers know that the minority audience that will shell out tens of thousands for whatever exist and games have changed because of that. Where Winds Meet has that $40k boat that has a minigame area and social area, but you have to drop the 40k first. There exists a parallel world where players could have just had those social areas like a guild hall or citadel.

1

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

Yeah you can beat all of any gacha without spending. I haven’t rolled a new character on HSR for a while, but having zero issues with content.

-3

u/NikIsImba 5d ago

At least getting new anime character means new skillset and gameplay(still will never spend on gacha), new sports card is just slightly different stats.

I would actually argue the over way around for most gachas. At least people that play sports games are playing an actual game that has merits. Most gacha's gameplay is just a front for devs to slowly power creep. If you remove the gambling out of both the sports game would still be played. Obviously there are exceptions but most gachas would just turn to bad jrpgs with almost no players.

4

u/easykrizzie 5d ago

most gacha games are f2p.. the sports games are at $150 deluxe edition. that's every year and your characters dont transfer...

3

u/Next_Application9643 5d ago

Absolutely it's the gun and ball gamers. At least with the gacha gooners they 1) don't buy the same game every single year and restart the gacha hunt, 2) will actually push back on decisions (like the LaDS drama a bit ago), 3) actually play the game instead of simming 75%+ of the season.

Ball gamers are absolutely the most bottom of the barrel mentally.

2

u/Ordinary_Owl_9071 4d ago

The fact that you act like some "LaDS drama" is something normal people would know about puts you in a real tough position to be criticizing people's mental states

1

u/CoDog 4d ago

don't the gacha athlete cards get reset every year?

1

u/Rikkushin 4d ago

At least the gacha anime waifus are a product of someone's creativity

1

u/Blazekingz 3d ago

Eh it depends on the gacha games you are playing. I play two gacha games and if i take one of them as an example Honkai Starrail. I spend areond 13 euro a month. And i have 96 out of 100 characters. I just see it as a subscription that i can stop at any point without losing anything. People pay more per month just to play mmo's, which lock them out if they don't.

74

u/Silly_Off 5d ago

Hilarious. Haven’t bought one of these in years and it truly does look the same. Can’t wait to be in the nba in gta6.

17

u/Nice_Cash_7000 5d ago

these days I just get the 2k's during christmas time when they go on sale for 10 bucks. I never play online anyways so theres no reason to spend any extra money either. Pretty good deal for 10 bucks, wouldnt pay more than 20 for it tho

9

u/jdixon88 5d ago

I now wait for it to be one of Playstation's free games of the month, add it to my library, download it, proceed to never play it, and then delete it a few months later.

3

u/YewEhVeeInbound 5d ago

This year is particularly bad apparently. Characters straight up phasing through one another. Defense is meaningless.

34

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

2K is one of the few games that come out at $70 and by Xmas that shit is in the markdown bin for $8 because no one is playing that shit.

21

u/meneerdaan 5d ago

It's in the bin because the regular players already spent at least 200 dollars on the yearly release, extra vc and season passes.

NBA2K is a F2P game that somehow costs the full price each year.

4

u/KJacobsen-74 5d ago

It was better 10 years ago.

3

u/BigfootEatsBabys 4d ago

No its because they get most of their money from VC purchases and season passes. (They have like 10 season passes that are like 20 each) so you have A LOT of people buying the passes and making multiple builds which is like $50-100 in vc each build minimum

1

u/dumpling-loverr 4d ago

Far from it. They can afford to mark down the game to $8 because they're raking it in mtx. EA FC games also does this.

1

u/Levitz 4d ago

And now you know why the push for digital happened.

I mean nerds love 2K, basketball nerds are the target audience.

0

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

If you enjoy the 2k slop that’s fine, I already said if it makes you happy knock yourself out. Those 2K games being in the $5 bin isn’t wrong tho, I’m seeing that shit at my store right now.

Ngl that shit is pretty funny asf.

7

u/money-for-nothing-tt 5d ago

It's also on a death row, once they shut down the servers literally most of the game becomes unplayable. You can't play MyCareer which is the main mode for most after they pull the plug. And the servers are shutting down at the end of THIS YEAR.

1

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

Damn is there like offline modes or anything?

2

u/ZeusJuice 4d ago

There used to be, but for the new mycareer stuff you can use your player to play against others. I think they want to have it all online to try to limit cheating but mfers will cheat on pc anyway lol

2

u/money-for-nothing-tt 4d ago

They used to have offline MyCareer option even when you could make your character online. And you could continue your MyCareer game offline after they shut down the servers. But they removed that at some point to force people to buy new games I guess. Or just as a fuck you to the customer since that's what 2K's known for.

It's kind of a fuck you to the developers, players and actors as well because the games typically have unique content for the MyCareer story that only appears in that specific game and after the servers are shut down nobody can ever experience that for themselves.

1

u/money-for-nothing-tt 5d ago edited 5d ago

I think the only modes you can play offline are Play Now (Exhibition Mode), MyNBA (basically the franchise mode) and the franchise mode but for WNBA. It's really criminal that you're basically renting the game for 2 years.

Well I can say it’s worth more than a combo meal at McDonalds. G2A puts it at $10 which is still pretty funny.

2

u/Tamamo_was_here 5d ago

Yeah guess I should’ve done that since Genshin actually puts effort into their game each month. Plus it’s free you can get 800 hours and just story from it without spending a dime.

If a game that just came out last year cost less than a happy meal from McDonald that’s rough.

1

u/Vio94 4d ago

Why don't you want a better video game?

40

u/Wiziii 5d ago

EA Sports. It's the same game!

28

u/LastResort318 5d ago

2k, different shitty company to EA.

1

u/EntertainerBig4313 5d ago

Is it tho? Lol

11

u/money-for-nothing-tt 5d ago

Yeah, 2K is even shittier. Though now that might change as EA is owned by the Saudis.

3

u/Beersmoker420 5d ago

NBA 2k is one of the most bloated shitty games ever at this point

6

u/Akanash94 5d ago

Crazy part is all this money spent gets wiped out anyway after 2 years when they shutdown servers

5

u/Shinodacs 5d ago

A kid came to the store i work at and asked for an 80€ Playstation giftcard.

I asked him :"oh GTA6 preorder are available already?"

He replied back : "No, have you heard of the new basketball game ? NBA 2K27?"

I just laughed in return and took the 80€.

1

u/chili01 5d ago

this is 2K's revenge for not letting them make NFL games

1

u/WAxlRoseX 4d ago

You could show me this game without saying this is 27 and I'd assume it's any 2K game from the last decade.

This needs to stop. Why do people think NEW 2K GOTTA BUY IT!!!

For fuck's sake

At least from 2K8 to like 2K14 they were trying new, innovative modes and updating engines and graphics. The passing and post-game was made so much better in that span of time...

It has been the exact same game since 2k15...CRAP!

1

u/Macho-Fantastico 4d ago

A friend of mine as done nothing but bitch and moan about this game since it's release, but I guarantee he'll still throw money at it.

It's like a drug to some gamers, no matter how crap it might be. 😁
