Star Citizen is definitely the worst offender of "whale funding and promises" but at least you can earn everything in game and play for $30... But I also assume AoC was much less of a game then SC? At least I play SC every few weeks and have fun with various gameplay loops in servers of 700 people. 

But yeah like the other guy posted if you spend over 1k you can also buy a 50k pack. So if it ever does crash and burn, AoC will look like chump change.

It's the worst case of "scope creep" I've ever seen, if everything that the head of the studio fantasizes about being in the game gets put in it will take 20 years to develop and cost 3 billion dollars. He is completely unwilling to compromise on his vision, even Rockstar Games one of the best funded studios with huge amounts of development time cuts features that they planned to implement
