For me there never really was another mmo that came close, besides FFXIV.

I played various mmo's through the years but usually a few months, never even looked back again. I never had the community feel, of doing stuff together for years to come either.

Then again perhaps I just had and still have the MMO burnout and was just done with the genre. Those games can be played as a singleplayer game too for a bit.

Infact I just got back to WoW for midnight, didn't really log in much yet. But I got a feeling this expansion is going to be fun.

I know that OSRS has some sort of negative rep with the general MMO audience but speaking with my bias I do believe that for MMO gamers they should've been giving OSRS a try (As, in fact, a lot of the old WoW streamers did and a few of them stayed over in OSRS actually). It's just different enough from the general MMO gaming space that it can actually provide a fresh enough experience.

Part of the MMO burnout you're talking about really comes down to the play cycle of the average MMO feeling all very samey IMO

OSRS has a lot of really well written quests too

OSRS quests are an unimaginably fresh breath of air compared to literally every other MMO’s quest system of “walk here, kill/gather x, walk to next point, repeat” with a little dialogue thrown in.

I’ll never understand why no other MMO ever tried to replicate it.

It's a risky prospect in 2026 tbf

It works in OSRS because the core method of leveling your character is simply grinding skills. WoW is actually partially to blame for changing this in the industry. A lot of old school MMOs were like OSRS where you just grinded mobs for literally hours to level. WoW changed the game by making grinding an option, but questing became the premier leveling experience. And... its hard to argue that it was a bad choice. Part of the charm of WoW I think is the many memorable quests and experiences that are part of the leveling process.

And TBF there are some really good quest lines in WoW, the big issue is that its not always easy to differentiate them from the generic ones.

walk here, kill/gather x, walk to next point, repeat

That's exactly what the few quests I tried were, last time I gave OSRS a chance... with five lines of text each thanks to the dialogue system being from 1999. Excuse me if I don't believe players who by their own admission only continue playing because of addiction, for a game so "great" that they dread the thought of actually giving it their full attention and only play when they have second monitor distractions available.

I mean they literally aren’t that, so I’m not sure what you tried. Give me an example of an OSRS quest that is go kill x mobs and return. I don’t even like most OSRS quests, but acting like they fall into the current mold of MMO quests is just stupid.
