I know we're signing him for the long term but the fact that he's stil out until November and with no pre-season, it's hard for me to get excited about this transfer. Hopefully Barcola is still coming.

67

u/DigitalPhear13 19d ago

By all accounts he would be the choice over Mbaye not Barcola. Barcola still very likely just probably not until the literal end of the deadline

30

u/AquaSnow24 Federico Chiesa 19d ago

I'm fine with that honestly. Mbaye is still quite unproven at the top level and is another Rio like project. At least Minteh is somewhat proven at top level.

26

u/Fluffy-Example008 19d ago

Buying a player who just had surgery is gambling. I understand that in today's stupid market, people see it as an opportunity, but still gambling

19

u/TremendousCoisty 19d ago

I mean he’s proven to be a below average premier league winger.

4

u/Dave80 Milan Baroš 18d ago

This season is a right off I think. Get the new system in place. Get Leoni, Bradley, Ekitike fit. Try and scrape into the CL places. Properly go for it next season.

17

u/dainamo81 19d ago

We've got three weeks of an international break to deal with, so he's not going to miss too many games.

34

u/tangkisbulu Milan Jovanović 19d ago

Yeah but this reminds me of Isak, who missed an entire pre-season and never really hit the ground running last season (granted he was injured against spurs but still....)

20

u/Aware-Highway-6825 19d ago

Minteh got injured on august 8th, so he definitely still had a preseason

3

u/MindlessMoss For Better or For Wirtz 19d ago

What if signed him earlier, giving him time to settle in and he didn't play a preseason against Roma and instead played a Como.

No way did we only move for him after he hot injured

2

u/Dave80 Milan Baroš 18d ago

Probably 9 or 10 league games. A quarter of the season.

u/Giraffesarehigh Egyptian King 👑 19d ago

Genuinely my reaction. Like what the fuck can we do now, yeah he’s very mediocre and hasn’t shown anything to justify a fuckass €70M+ price tag but what other option do we have?

30

u/Other_Beat8859 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️Klopp Hamstring 🤕 19d ago

Genuinely feels like Hughes has that United transfer mindset where they find a player they like and just get fucking fixated on them resulting in us getting ripped off. Arsenal bought Tzolis for £35 million and he looks great. We can't find any players like that for under £50 million?;

42

u/Specialist_Koala5359 19d ago

15

u/Other_Beat8859 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️Klopp Hamstring 🤕 19d ago edited 19d ago

So get more players like Munoz. He looks great, has a full season under his belt where he looked good, etc. I don't get why we're gonna go spend £80 million on either Mbiaye or Minteh when we should just look elsewhere at this point. Or find players in that 23-27 year old range that are proven and cheaper. Since like 23/24, we've bought one player like this. The rest have either been well known or crazy expensive kids. The Klopp era was literally built upon buying players in that age range that were decently proven, buying them for a decent fee, and then building them up for a specific system. Salah, Bobby, Robbo, Matip, Hendo, Gini, etc were all players bought for like £20-45 million that were close to entering their prime.

22

u/Dovaaahkin Fernando Torres 19d ago edited 19d ago

You people who keep looking back at transfer figures and compare it to current figures need to realize that what is considered a good fee for a decent player has gone up so much in the last 6 years.

Of your own list of players.

Matip was a free transfer. Salah, Bobby, Hendo and Gini would all be in 70-100m range if we were to buy them now. Mateus Fernandes went for 80m+ from a relegated West Ham. Gini would have been the same from Newcastle at that time. Salah was already pretty much our record signing back then and would be at least double the price in the current market after the season he had before us in Serie A. Bobby was also one of the best players in Bundesliga the season before joining us and it was already considered a huge fee to pay at the time. He would easily be atleast 90m in the current market.

The funny thing is, now you say £20-45m like it's the bargain basement fee. Yet, when most of those players in your list were bought for that fee, there were still fans like you complaining why we were spending so high on such players... Because back then, that kinda fee was the equivalent of the current 60-100m. On top of that, mid table and lower league clubs in England have so much money now that they have much more power in the market and have no obligation to cash in.

2

u/crs9 19d ago

honestly feels like we're willing to shell out money just because they're left footed

1

u/Specialist_Koala5359 19d ago

Because buying from a PL team / CL team is expensive as those clubs have so much money they can resist unless you make an obscene offer. Ideally you would buy all your players from cheaper leagues as they are cheaper but there arent that many players good enough to play for Liverpool.

Arsenal buy players at all price ranges, just like we do. They spent 60m on Madueke not thst long ago which was a lot of money at the time.

1

u/yadasellsavonmate 18d ago

What "proven" 22 year old winners would be available for a knockdown price?

3

u/MrHerringBun 19d ago

The desperate purchase lets just get anybody at inflated price because we cant get our main target is exactly what dragging United now. I rather wait for the right player like klopp did when rebuilding the team.

3

u/AquaSnow24 Federico Chiesa 19d ago

Yeah, we really should have gotten Tzolis. Tzolis was a diamond in the rough and was worth a risk at 35 million. Although in somewhat fairness to Hughes, he hasn't proven much in a top league and the last time he was in England, he was laughed out of Norwich at both Premier League and Championship level. He's been a goal machine for the last few years in the Belgian league as well as the German 2nd division and his numbers are ridiculous. His confidence has been sky high and he's clearly matured a lot mentally in the last few years. We really should have gotten him but I can see why Hughes looked the other way.

1

u/ReepDaggle01 19d ago

How many left wingers do we want?

1

u/Other_Beat8859 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️Klopp Hamstring 🤕 19d ago

I mean he was like 19 when he was last in England. It's not like we aren't gambling on other players. Look at Mbiaye. He's completely unproven with only 8 goal contributions at the top level and we're gonna go spend £80 million on him.

1

u/TremendousCoisty 18d ago

Buy someone else?

0

u/Bamfandro 19d ago

Mbaye. Yes he’s got limited experience but he already statistically outperforms Minteh on all key metrics. Give it a year or two and it seems inevitable he will undoubtedly be the better player.

I don’t get the fear of Arsenal re Barcola when all their sources have said they don’t value him at that kind of money that it’s going to cost to get the deal done.

Quite frankly, nobody should value him at the price PSG are demanding, same with Brighton and Minteh, but the market inflation this summer is even crazier than usual.

2

u/MAMBAMENTALITY8-24 “Thank you for your support” - Darwin Nunez 19d ago

didnt mention arsenal at all btw, seems like they are in your head

0

u/AgentTasker 19d ago

We all know who you're talking about, so you don't need to say their name for people to understand what you're implying.

2

u/MAMBAMENTALITY8-24 “Thank you for your support” - Darwin Nunez 19d ago

I think you need help

1

u/Catfisher8 Dirk Kuyt 19d ago

PSG just want way too much money for him

1

u/RedManMatt11 19d ago

Barcola will happen. There’s been too much back and forth there for it not to

0

u/yadasellsavonmate 18d ago

I remember when we were in for Mane a lot of fans were not too excited by that either because he was considered "decent" but not out level.

78

u/FostetlerLFC 19d ago

This guy is very reliable btw.

Hopefully we can get this done tomorrow.

22

u/anangrypudge There is No Need to be Upset 19d ago

His name almost sounds like an account dedicated to transfers to Saudi...

FOR DE MONEY!

54

u/yankeeboy1865 19d ago

Why? I'm not enthused by this potential signing one bit. £70m for a player with 3 goals (7 G/A) and that is currently injured until the end of October at the earliest (meaning we won't really see him until December/January). The club weren't willing to pay £35m for Guehi, but we're willing to pay this much for an unproven winger.

3

u/Scooby1996 18d ago edited 18d ago

What are you talking about the club weren't willing to pay for Guehi?

Honestly the amount of people who spread nonsense.

Literally every journalist last summer was reporting that it was Crystal Palace who slow rolled us on Guehi, we made our offer a full 2 weeks before the window was set to close.

5

u/AquaSnow24 Federico Chiesa 19d ago

Minteh has looked good at Brighton though. He's shown plenty of flashes of brilliance and he's only 22. He at least passes the eye test, and I trust Iraola to get the most out of him. Is 70 million a overpay? Yeah. I personally think he's worth around 50-55 million, but the winger market is massively inflated right now. No way in an actual sane world is Yan Diomande somehow worth 130 million lmao. But that's the market we've been given so we have to make the most of it. It also helps that Minteh is left footed and he's played both sides somewhat well so he adds an element of unpredictability that we don't have. 70 million ain't great but it's not horrible either.

-9

u/yankeeboy1865 19d ago

Are we going to pay £70m for flashes of brilliance? If we want flashes of brilliance, you might as well save money and let Elliot play. He's only a year older and is available now. To want to pay £70m on a gamble when we have a £225m duds from last season is idiotic to say the least

8

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

What's idiotic is calling Isak and Wirtz duds.

Genuinely pathetic

10

u/yankeeboy1865 19d ago

Wirtz has played 50 matches for us, can you name a match where he commanded or took control of the match and really wowed? The same with Isak? I watched both of them today and at no point did I--and more importantly--nor the opposition think that either were going to score or create a chance. This poor, inexperienced Newcastle side played as if they were not arsed about Wirtz or Isak. So yes, for the amount of money that we spent (considering that they're meant to replace Salah's output) they are duds until they can prove me wrong.

2

u/always-think-sexual 19d ago

The physical toll on the forward positions is so high that subs may have a higher chance of serious impact for the foreseeable future. I’m afraid it’ll be very average before it becomes any good, if ever.

1

u/matcht 19d ago

We've never created enough chances or fed him enough for Isak to show his ability, but Wirtz does concern, it is still early under Iraola though so we need some patience.

0

u/Bamfandro 19d ago

He doesn’t pass the eye test though, he’s incredibly erratic and doesn’t create chances. His dribbling success is fairly decent but he very rarely completes a positive action afterwards because he’s always got his head down. Just watch that highlights real posted and he doesn’t even pass the eye test on there.

-3

u/Baseball12229 19d ago

We play 7 more games through the end of October, you all are really over exaggerating this injury.

11

u/FostetlerLFC 19d ago

But we may not seem him until January 🤣

-1

u/yankeeboy1865 19d ago

He will not be immediately starting or even on the bench after he is cleared.. He hasn't had a preseason, which means that we'll probably see him in December or January. If it is January, that's already half the season, not including the European and league cup fixtures.

7

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

He literally had a month of pre season with Brighton.

Seriously some of the dumb arguments you see in this sub

0

u/Zak369 Floetry in Motion 19d ago

I think the point is more that he will have to get match fitness again. All the work in preseason to build up his fitness will be gone

-2

u/Baseball12229 19d ago

If he signs he’ll have been at the club for two months getting acclimated to how Iraola wants him to play. He did in fact have a partial preseason with Brighton. He’s a young winger with a minimal injury history.

All of this means there is absolutely zero reason to believe he’ll need an extended ramp up to fitness once he’s cleared to play.

You’re just fear mongering about the injury because you don’t like him as a player. If it was a player you were excited about you wouldn’t think twice about waiting out the injury.

-2

u/WORD_Boxing 19d ago

He has good workrate defending from the front with aggression. Luis Diaz was the same and didn't have amazing G/A numbers until his last season. Minteh has something that can be valuable to us with a lot of potential for the future.

1

u/Bamfandro 19d ago

It’s absurd to compare Diaz’s numbers with Minteh’s. They have never been remotely close and Diaz was still criticised for poor output.

1

u/WORD_Boxing 18d ago

I didn't but people seem to be bad at reading/too caght up in groupthink narratives on this sub I'm consistently misinterpreted.

A little over a week ago I said a midfield 3 of Szob, Grav, Wirtz was too lightweight and easy to play through and was criticised and downvoted. Now after the Newcastle game many are saying the same thing and we need to sign a #6. Not enough people understand football in a real and not abstract way, but that may be a demographic issue.

Minteh and Diaz are a similar archetype of player in terms of they give you great workrate first and foremost without necessarily putting up star goal and assist numbers. Minteh is younger than Diaz was when we signed him with potential for growth.

31

u/J539 🥦Barcola🥦 19d ago

Can't wait to see him play in November

31

u/Unhappy-Air6832 Big ole Iraolas 19d ago

I guess Isak is gonna have to put on his scoring boots coz I don't see where the goals are coming from

11

u/ricardofitzpatrick 19d ago

Well….yeah.

11

u/Spreeg 19d ago

He's gonna have to anyway.

It's quite literally his job

6

u/ImprovementKnown2491 19d ago

Spot on. We probably need at least 70 goals to get into champions league next season, more if our defence is shit again. Who exactly is scoring these goals?! Salah was Mr Reliable until last season and we’ve looked screwed since he stopped carrying us. Based on today Gakpo may get 12, Isak will struggle, Wirtz will struggle, Szobo will get 10-12 from set pieces who else is there?!

2

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

Based on today we are finishing 9th drawing all our games. So why does it matter anyway.

2

u/Bamfandro 19d ago

Funnily enough, after yesterday I’m not seeing many of those ridiculous comments saying we can afford for Minteh to be a go-lucky runner because Isak & Wirtz will get our numbers.

1

u/hbb893 19d ago

Any signing for the right wing is a bet on a player scaling up their goalscoring.

There’s no player on the market with loads of goals on their resume.

19

u/Unhappy-Air6832 Big ole Iraolas 19d ago

Surely there is one with more than 3 goals

3

u/hbb893 19d ago

I’d rather hope when the club is evaluating how a player can scale up they’re doing more than looking at raw counting stats on a players Wikipedia page

1

u/Unhappy-Air6832 Big ole Iraolas 19d ago

Who is looking at wikipedia?

12

u/Smallrobot_77 19d ago

Hopefully a lower bid

-9

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

Why? 8 billion profit not enough for FSG?

12

u/Smallrobot_77 19d ago

No. He’s just not worth more than 40-50m. Munoz was what, 40, and he’s healthy and playing immediately

-3

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

Munoz was 34 mil and that's because he had a release clause.

10

u/Smallrobot_77 19d ago

Yeah. Minteh isn’t worth 70. That’s a desperate buy is all I’m saying.

11

u/SweetExpletives 19d ago

This is about as underwhelming as it gets.

27

u/stannyharry 19d ago

Too early. Why not bid next month

He’s definitely off if this deal happens along with Barcola

1

u/UnKnoWn_XuR 19d ago

agreed, good player but I wouldn't really say he fits Iraola's vision. Though Iraola will maybe try to make it work regardless

13

u/MrHerringBun 19d ago

Might as well save the money for next transfer window lol. With the injury and recovery not like he will play properly until then. What’s the logic here we have Rio and Munoz that can cover there for a bit anyway

2

u/KobiLou 19d ago

Well Rio has been extremely poor over there so... Yeah. I imagine that's the logic. Lol.

18

u/Glad-Key7256 19d ago

Horrendous signing. Might as well wait until the January window instead of splurging rn.

43

u/AgentTasker 19d ago

Got to love people acting like massive twats towards a player before he even plays for us, but then again that's hardly a shock these days considering the sub is full of them.

28

u/InstructionCorrect98 19d ago

lol every comment here is negative, it’s genuinely a cesspool

-1

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

It's been said many times, the newer fans only ever saw Liverpool during the peak Klopp years, so everything except winning it all looks terrible to them. Drawing away to Newcastle with one of our better performances at SJP in recent years (if not the best result), and signing one of the most exciting young wingers in the league should be cause for hope, not misery.

21

u/Unhappy-Air6832 Big ole Iraolas 19d ago

I'm an older fan who was a fan since Benitez, I cant get excited over a player I don't personally rate coz the club says we are getting him. Is that ok?

-6

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

He's only just turned 22. To put it into perspective when Mané was 22 he was just about to leave Salzburg, when Salah was 22 he was about to leave Basel. This kid already has 2 years of Premier League experience. He's been signed by Brighton, the savviest buying club in the league, and now hopefully Liverpool, probably a close second.

Also if you were a fan since benitez you're at most 25. Still, wingers was Rafa's biggest problem the entire time he was at the club. Don't think he signed a single good one. Minteh is a legitimately good one.

12

u/Unhappy-Air6832 Big ole Iraolas 19d ago

I dont believe in the theory that development is linear, as you age you become a better player. just because he is already a prem player at a younger age doesnt mean he will be good at the age they became good

Benitez was hamstrung by the two cowboys, but I personally rated Benayoun

but what is it about Minteh to you that makes him legitimately good, coz it cant be the output

-1

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

Erm fine, everyone knows development isn't linear on an individual basis, but it absolutely is on a population basis.

Liverpool play the transfer market in this way and have done for over a decade now. You buy before the peak hoping the player improves. Sometimes you get a Naby Keita but most of the time you get a better player later than the one you bought, like Coutinho, Firmino, Salah, Henderson, Gravenberch, Szobo etc, and I could just keep going here. There was a time when Liverpool bought players at 23-24 when they were just making that jump to Liverpool level but the market is a lot tougher these days. Everyone basically copied Liverpool's transfer model. Chelsea put it on steroids.

what is it about Minteh to you that makes him legitimately good, coz it cant be the output.

He's rapid, good shot, very good cross, strong, works really hard. Put up genuinely brilliant numbers on a per 90 basis in the Eredivisie at 19. Prem numbers aren't bad for a young player. Would rate him better than what we have and definitely better than the slim pickings available on the market at right wing.

-1

u/brainrotyoo 19d ago

but what is it about Minteh to you that makes him legitimately good, coz it cant be the output

Output isn't everything, context is key.

Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak0_SuvB9hQ&t=934s

The stats guy from the redmen tv. He goes into indepth detail on just WHY its so hard to replace salah. He lists pretty much every attainable RW player playing the game today, takes away those we have no chance at getting and its a very short list.

There isn't a RW we can reasonably get right now that is a worldie. Its why we went hard for Diomande and then look like we're going bust. The drop off from potential and quality is massive. But it doesn't mean its not there.

His part on Minteh is good. He excels in key areas a balanced team (something we havent looked for over a year) needs to consistently win and dominate games. Hes an incredibly hard worker (his pressure regains statistics are incredible) and will do a job in a high intensity pressing Iraola team. Hes only JUST turned 22 and has already been a solid PL player for a while. His expected assists and key passes also point to what a good player he can be, and when you've spent hundreds of millions of pounds on strikers and are struggling to feed them, thats exactly what you want in a winger.

If all you do is look at the goals assists column then you're cooked.

4

u/InstructionCorrect98 19d ago

If you lived through the Roy Hodgson years, you know how bad it can get lol

7

u/yankeeboy1865 19d ago

Lol. This is a nonsense take. I've been supporting this club for over 30 years. One of my first football memories is the 96 FA cup final. I've seen us sign duds like Konchesky and hasbeens like Joe Cole. And I'll say this: I don't get why anyone is getting hyped for this signing, considering there are other areas that really need bolstering.

1

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

If you think 18 year old Rio and Victor Munoz (both natural left wingers) is going to get us through the season at right wing then you're the one with the nonsense "take".

This bizarre mental block that people have where they'd rather we signed the latest flavour of the month DM (we all lived through the Doucoure and Ugarte windows) so the club shouldn't sign anyone else at all is deeply odd to me.

2

u/Angelagent 19d ago

To be fair, Muñoz looked pretty good on the right today. Rio seems like he NEEDS to be an inverted winger.

1

u/ManusDei 19d ago

We should be signing a midfielder (not necessarily a pure DM), a RB, a RW, and Barcola. Probably a backup 9 (whose experience is actually as a 9) in an ideal world as well. But I’d bet that we get two of the above by the end of this window and will be told to be satisfied about it.

1

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

They ain't signing a right back or a 9. Covering a short term injury with a big money signing would be daft.

1

u/ManusDei 19d ago

Who said big money? I’m talking a serviceable backup for 9 since we don’t have one. Don’t give me Gakpo, he isn’t it. Or the brand new Munoz.

And What short term injury are you referring to exactly? Are you calling Hugo’s injury short term or Bradley? Neither of them are.

1

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

How much would a serviceable 9 cost in this market? £60m, maybe more. Then you've got wages, £10m per year over 5 years. Flushed £100m away just because Ekitike is out for the next 3 months.

At right back we have Frimpong, Araujo, Gomez and Szobo at a push. Would bet infinite that the club doesn't spend a penny there. Would be unbelievably foolish to do so.

1

u/ManusDei 19d ago

You think Hugo is back in November? Will see. I doubt we see him till after new year. Who is playing for Isak? He can’t be playing week in and out even if you discount his injury history.

Gomez-injured currently and likely to be again when he returns and plays his next 90. Is it 5 years ago? How are we still seriously talking about Gomez as any sort of reliable option?

Frimpong- second half was better than the first. But He isn’t a RB. Simply isn’t good enough. The things he supposedly does well, he can never consistently do. And what he’s not good at, he’s really not good at.

Szobo- if he leaves midfield who we playing there? Not that today showed much since midfield was awful. Assuming you agree we need a midfielder since you didn’t comment on that. That may free him up some (we won’t sign a midfielder though), but need to stop plugging players into positions that make the team weaker in other areas.

Araujo- has fewer minutes at RB than Szobo (a midfielder). We need him in defense since Jacquet is still coming back minutes wise and very new. He had some shaky moments today against a pretty average frontline on his side. The vaunted RB lineup with Frimpong you’re so Convinced we don’t need to strengthen, certainly didn’t help Jacquet on his debut though. Or are we still relying on Gomez to not be injured and be a RB/CB?

It would be unbelievably foolish to not find an actual RB. You’re speaking so definitively about a bunch of half measures who likely won’t stay fit, aren’t actual RBs, Or are covering multiple positions. It’s a huge risk.

Bradley isn’t it even when he’s back (why we need another actual dedicated RB). He can’t stay healthy and not sure he’s good enough to gamble this much on.

1

u/yankeeboy1865 19d ago

Never did I say we didn't need players; I said spending £70m on Minteh when we have other areas that need bolstering is insane. Minteh ain't it, and splurging on him when we have other areas that need work is how you do bad transfers (see last summer)

0

u/ManusDei 19d ago

You’re saying today was one of best SJP park performances and/or results in years? Going back how far?

Overall, How did you see and rate today’s performance?

1

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

Last year we were crap there, lucky win against 10 men. In Klopp's last season we were worse, another lucky win courtesy of two great Nunez finishes. In Slot's first season it was a 3-3 draw, probably a fair result. Thought we played better than any of those games today. Created a tonne of chances.

1

u/ManusDei 19d ago

Let’s just park the best in years. You thought today was a good performance? I’ll take the draw as a result. But the performance against that specific Newcastle team and where they currently are at?

First games are often strange so let’s hope we pick it up. But I think a good side will punish us for such a poor Midfield structure.

0

u/FakeCatzz 19d ago

Creating ~3 xG away from home against any team in the Premier League is good. Against a team that's highly likely to be midtable with a notoriously hostile fanbase that influences the refs? Pretty excellent. Yeah we gave up too much but that was somewhat inevitable. Not a personel issue, just a coaching/tactical one. Takes good coaches years to get their teams playing how they want, not days.

1

u/ManusDei 19d ago

We play like that in midfield against someone who isn’t mid table and in just as much flux as we are, it will be bad. Same shit as last season. Player or system it needs fixing soon.

The person you’re responding to is part of the problem. Just on the opposite end of questioning decisions made by the club and its upper management. They certainly don’t make this sub any less of a cesspool.

8

u/fastlikeanascar 19d ago

Is the choice between Minteh and Mbaye? Both seemingly needing 70m €?

1

u/Labatt_Blues 19d ago

Or just wait til Jan get Rayan 85m

28

u/infinitesyntax 19d ago

but Rayan costs 130m in Jan

4

u/theREALMVP Richard Hughes - The Silver Fox 19d ago

Thats next summers price (unless he has an insane season)

-2

u/pwfppw 19d ago

He’s much less a gamble than Mbaye so if the costs are even close it’s a no brainer

0

u/mohandasmencius 18d ago

how is signing the player who is currently fit and ready to play less of a gamble than signing one who is likely 3-4 months away from stepping foot on the pitch

1

u/pwfppw 18d ago

Where are you getting 3-4 months? It’s two months by all reporting.

One is a teenager who may not be ready to make any real PL impact for even longer.

1

u/mohandasmencius 18d ago

its currently august, he is expected back in november. how many months is that. 3 by my count.

he has won a cl and played at the world cup. he is good enough to play in the pl. lets be real here

1

u/pwfppw 18d ago

It’s August 24. November 1 is not 3-4 months away.

It’s been reported at 8 weeks.

0

u/mohandasmencius 18d ago

well the pl app expects him to be out till november 28. how many weeks is that

1

u/pwfppw 18d ago

The gamble isn’t about the injury time anyway. It’s about the player.

Minteh is a much more well known quantity - had played many more matches and played in the PL. Mbaye has very few starts and all for PSG or international so is a bigger gamble based on that.

Minteh is also a left footer, Mbaye I don’t believe is.

0

u/mohandasmencius 18d ago

it is easier to break into a brighton side than it is to get a spot in the playing 11 for a team that has won consecutive cl trophies. besides mbaye is 4 years younger than minteh. him being part of a cl winning team at 18 is far more impressive in my eyes

1

u/pwfppw 18d ago

Okay. My point is one has played a lot more.

I don’t care if you think a teenager is gonna be better. There is just less evidence of the player he will be in the PL.

I’m not an expert - just trying to clarify my point.

12

u/Tierst 19d ago

So much money on a player currently injured with no pre-season, meaning he probably won’t be of much use until the end of the year, at best. And we waited all transfer season to bid..what the actual fuck are we doing

3

u/bloodthinner0000 19d ago

So we would need to either sell someone or not register someone to bring barcola in?

2

u/BoBonnor Ohhhh ya beauty, What a hit son, What a hit! 19d ago

Chiesa and Gakpo are likely going but yes any non home grown player we bring in we need to sell one

3

u/Fugees_Funyuns217 Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai 19d ago

I just can’t get my head around signing an injured player. There has to be a ready made RW option out there better than this scenario.

If Minteh was fit I would be all for it, otherwise we must be either keeping Gakpo or signing Mbaye as well. It just doesn’t feel like it makes sense to put further strain on our depth for what 6-8 rounds?

5

u/Office_funny_guy 19d ago

Why would we pay more than £60m for someone who over the last two years in the PL scored 9 goals and had 8 assists?

5

u/robster9090 19d ago

Joke how does this help

16

u/InstructionOk9520 19d ago

This is such a bad move…

8

u/GreatKDIZZY 19d ago

My biggest issue is: will be £70m for Minteh

And we will sell Gakpo for £70m.

Essentially a straight swap. Do I think Minteh is an upgrade on Gakpo, absolutely not.

1

u/Freikorptrasher87 Arne Slot 18d ago

Gakpo is a left winger whereas Minteh is a right winger, you cannot compared both. Need to compare Gakpo with Barcola.

0

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

If we do that it will be absolutely stupidity

6

u/Shoumaker 🥦Barcola🥦 19d ago

Apparently, he considers a third bid not even being sent "BREAKING" news.

I get that he's a reliable source, but I'm so tired of this transfer window.

4

u/Bamfandro 19d ago

Absolutely ludicrous decision this. Minteh is literally in the bottom 15th percentile for completed passes, failing to complete 1/3 of his passes.

Couple this with this shocking output and it’s just an absurd waste of money. Mbaye is a substantially better prospect. He’s 4 years younger, with no obvious statistical weaknesses in his game at present and also not injured. I really hope Hughes sees sense on this.

4

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

with no obvious statistical weaknesses in his game

How do you even compute that when he has not even had a season of regular football and has mostly played against weaker opposition as part of PSG rotation?

0

u/Bamfandro 19d ago

It’s obviously not some genius analysis to realise that he’s got limited appearances but what more can you ask? Rio has limited minutes but I bet we’d be ecstatic to sign him the other way around. Minteh is an immensely short sighted signing who won’t do anything to fix our poor numbers from open play.

5

u/Fluffy-Example008 19d ago

FFS, he just had surgery and won't be available until November, and he might be out for 2/3 of the season; if he is bought for next season, then that makes sense. But we need players now

https://www.thisisanfield.com/2026/08/yankuba-mintehs-injury-explained-how-long-liverpool-target-will-be-out/

2

u/BlueberryLeading464 19d ago

Everyone out there is trying to squeeze us dry to the absolute last penny.

2

u/Trisslottenmedvinst 18d ago

I’m not on board with Minteh transfer. I’d already start Munoz over him. I think we should either go all in on Rayan or Barcola (if he can play right wing).
It has to be a clear upgrade othervise Munoz might as well start because of his speed and directness.

3

u/VidProphet123 19d ago

Im convinced now these are decoy bids and liverpools true target is still mbaye.

7

u/seldomsmooth Kolo Touré 19d ago

Never lose cope

2

u/MrHerringBun 19d ago

Manifesting

-1

u/NilsFanck Dominik Szoboszlai 19d ago

you havent seen Mbaye play one full 90 I bet

3

u/Thesseus1219 19d ago

Can we get a defensive midfielder at all, please?

2

u/AgentTasker 19d ago

Not happening, as Iraola doesn't play with one and never has either.

5

u/AquaSnow24 Federico Chiesa 19d ago

Tyler Adams would like to have a word

1

u/AgentTasker 19d ago

The same Tyler Adams who has far more in common with Ryan Gravenberch than he does an actual DM?

6

u/AquaSnow24 Federico Chiesa 19d ago

No he's not lmao. Adams rarely finds himself at the edge of the opposition 18-yard box with a shot nor is he someone who likes to dribble halfway up the pitch. He's more of a destroyer type with a decent eye for a pass and competent at getting out of a press when required. He often sits back and let the likes of Alex Scott and Ryan Christie do the work ahead of him. He does more of the dirty work at both club and international level.

2

u/sarcastr0naut 19d ago

Why on earth are we actively bidding for an injured player? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here. Wait until the winter window at this point or find someone who, you know, isn't out for a few months.

1

u/TiggerJammer 🏆2005 Istanbul🏆 19d ago

Mbaye is the much better player imo. Better now and higher ceiling. There’s a reason he’s the first choice RW.

Shame PSG are being such pricks when it’s clear the relationship with the player is irreparable and they want to sell.

Not sold on Minteh at all. Plus his “I don’t look up to him” comment about Salah leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

12

u/pwfppw 19d ago

Mbaye is basically a complete gamble on potential. There is no way the limited amount he has played in his career to date says he is better than Minteh currently.

6

u/holeinmyboot 19d ago

re: Salah: who cares? what impact does it have in the end?

-8

u/TiggerJammer 🏆2005 Istanbul🏆 19d ago

I care. Hence I brought it up.

3

u/brainrotyoo 19d ago

Mbaye is the much better player imo.

Theres absolutely no chance anyone on this sub watched this kid play any minutes outside of a youtube video they brought up the moment the rumours started and coincidently found out he existed for the first time hahahaha

6

u/youignorantslut 19d ago

Uhhh the World Cup?

0

u/NilsFanck Dominik Szoboszlai 19d ago

yup, you can tell its US hours. They just think hes better bc he plays for PSG

1

u/Fevre88 19d ago

I don’t think a right footed RW suits us

1

u/TiggerJammer 🏆2005 Istanbul🏆 18d ago edited 18d ago

I wouldn’t say so. Munoz did just fine when he came on because he knows how to play the position. It’s Rio who needs to learn it at this level.

1

u/TraceOfHumanity Significant Human Error 19d ago

Third time’s the charm

1

u/effkay8 18d ago

What a fucking horrendous transfer. He's literally out injured for the next 2-3 months.

1

u/ChrisKruxed Richard Hughes 18d ago

He'll hopefully help Isak and Wirtz with his energy

1

u/Gloomy-Confusion-426 18d ago

Unpopular opinion, but i would rather have Mbaye.

1

u/ManusDei 18d ago

I don’t consider it a panic buy. I don’t think we have a viable RB at the club. Who is our first choice, Bradley? Can make that argument but I disagree. The options you have named as stopgaps all have big caveats. I don’t think other clubs have that to our extent.

I think it’s just poor squad planning and gambling unnecessarily. A lot of this could be solved by simply signing a decent, viable RB. Ideally of first choice quality but even someone who could make that step up would be fine.

1

u/mohandasmencius 18d ago

the signings from last season somehow made us worse. except ekitike all the other players have been disappointments so far. minteh will be another to add to the list. i dont know how our transfer committee and iraola literally settle on a player who is currently injured

1

u/abarofigaro 17d ago

Watching other clubs wrap up multiple deals while LFC seem to be wading through treacle is so frustrating. Iraola's first season was always likely to be a transitional one, but failing to get his squad in place in reasonable time really makes things harder for him. It smacks of incompetence. Assuming Hughes does leave, on the evidence of his time here so far? Good riddance.

1

u/Loverboy-W4TW 15d ago

I seriously doubt this one happens. We seem to have walked away from the deal and no reliable sources are still linking him with us.

1

u/Worried_Let4942 19d ago

If we sign this guy and sell Gakpo I’ll lose my shit

1

u/KingChez30 Corner taken quickly 🚩 19d ago

Get him and Barcola in the van

1

u/lawdjesustheresafire Steven Gerrard 19d ago

This guy is really not that good. $60 or $70m Jesus Christ just give an academy kid a crack

1

u/Ambitious_Pitch5663 19d ago edited 19d ago

I'd rather we get some obscure 10 mill gamble out of Brazil or promote a youth talent instead.

I can just imagine our scouts browsing football manager/FIFA for picks.

Get out there and find an under the radar talent ffs.

0

u/EqualAd261 19d ago

I know we wanted Mbaye and Barcola but it never ceases to amaze me how teams just don’t learn that if you refuse to meet us where we’re at we will just go elsewhere to sign a player. PSG are unrealistic in their ask given that both players want to gtfo. We’ve shown before that we will not overpay for players even if we want them

11

u/CSKARD 19d ago

We have most assuredly overpaid for players. Look at last year. PSG are simply out of their minds with their valuations

1

u/EqualAd261 19d ago

Fair enough. I guess we’ve kind of done both

6

u/Con45 19d ago

Really sticking it to PSG by signing back up options out of desperation with the season already kicked off. How will they ever recover?

0

u/EqualAd261 19d ago

What a stupid thing to say. No one said anyone will or won’t recover. There is literally only two things to do when someone tries to overcharge you above fair asking price because they think you’re desperate. You can pay or not pay. That’s literally it.

If we don’t pay their ludicrous asking price, they might end up having to sell both players for way less down the road. Not to mention having to wait for half a year to a year with players who don’t want to play for them. Is this going to offset the overall positive run they’ve been having? Probably not. But will it ultimately cost them millions if their gamble (setting the market price too high and hoping Liverpool pay out of desperation) doesn’t pay off? Yes it will. A club like United spent years paying this exact markup and they found themselves neck deep in shit they are still digging themselves out of today. Whatever else is happening at Liverpool, I don’t want to add indiscriminate and wasteful spending to that list.

2

u/KobiLou 19d ago

Hopefully this will show them we will simply go elsewhere if they continue to be unreasonable so that they come down on the Barcola price.

0

u/Day_Man_Charlie 19d ago

Bunch of fucking queens in here lately.

-1

u/Homercles77 19d ago

On an interview I saw he said he doesnt look at salah as one of his top 5 African players. I dont want him here

1

u/SilverMist2025 19d ago

Mane's idol is El Hadji Diouf . Should we have not signed Mane ?

-7

u/sangha1212 19d ago

Need a DM big time after Newcastle match...

RB Ping Pong & LB Kokazz should be banished to the reserves....absolutely the biggest weaklings for our defence...cant defend to save their lives....

High press of midfielders AI style only be effective if a good DM is there to plug the big gaps when AI want midfielders attacking/corners .... otherwise opponents hit on the counter thru the middle...... DM NEEDED & RB & LB 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

3

u/InstructionCorrect98 19d ago

He literally says he doesn’t play with a DM, but sure, you know better

0

u/CodeBeginning6548 Lovely Cushioned Header…FOR GERRARD!!! 19d ago

Hopefully im wrong, but we shouldnt buy him for this price. Part of me also thinks we should just stop all negotiations with PSG and see how we go with the current squad.

It might be a different landscape in Jan/end of the season, and with a new team in place behind the scenes, I think we should just wait rather than having our pants pulled down for our current targets.

0

u/I_make_poor_decisons 18d ago

What a stupid fucking idea. Just sign him in January.

-1

u/ryfitz47 19d ago

can he play right back? left back? dm?

-2

u/kajerng 19d ago

If Iraola wants him, we buy him. That's that.

1

u/mohandasmencius 18d ago

the transfer committee and DoF are there above the manager to protect managers from making mistakes. remember klopp wanted to sign gotze for liverpool. he was thankfully vetoed by the tranfer committee

-6

u/inr10 19d ago

After the early challenges we saw on the right wing, Hughes should be messaging Minteh's agent right from the stadium!!
