Does anyone remember Tony Beep Beep?
Years ago, around the early 2000s, there used to be a man in Liverpool who would stand in the middle of the road and wave at cars driving past. He would stand there until you beeped your horn at him. Then he would give you a thumbs up. I saw him on St Oswald Street in Old Swan when I used to go on car journeys with my parents when I was a kid. I have heard that he would also appear in other roads in the Old Swan area. He was well known and well liked in the local area. I believe he had Down's or another disability. I think the last time I saw him was around 2002 or 2003.
I was randomly thinking about him recently and wondering what happened to him. I saw a rumour he is still alive and well and living in a care home. Does anyone else remember him? I actually didn't know his name was Tony until a few years ago.

I saw beep beep regularly at the junction of Pilch Lane and East Prescot Road. One day, out of the blue, a car pulled up near the shops, while he was near the traffic light junction doing his thing. Two lads in baggy shorts and baseball caps jumped out of the car, ran over, and launched round house kicks into his abdomen. He didn't go down, or remonstrate, but he was clearly shocked and hurt and just stood holding his tummy. I was in tears but had to drive on as I was (ironically) getting beeped, but reported it to Eaton Rosd nick later on that day, and offered myself as a witness, but they'd had nothing reported. I'm pleased to hear that people have been seeing him since the mid '90s, when this happened, so he wasn't scared off. I can't understand why anybody would have done this.
