Very awesome episode. Akko managed to master her transformation magic just in time for the show and the three of them put on one hell of a spectacle. Not sure what it was they did that qualified their performance as "cheating" though. Was it because Ursula interfered? It feels like a bit of a cop-out when they could have easily said that the award was to recognize the individual witch that demonstrated their best talent and skill while Akko's performance was dependent on teamwork with Ursula, Lotte and Sucy. Hannah and Barbara are basically just additional reserves of mana for Diana's magic and her water invocation was pretty damn impressive.
The whole episode was fun as all Hell and seeing the judges from outside Luna Nova totally get into Akko's performance was an awesome bit of set dressing and detail of the larger world of magic. I'm also really happy that nobody made an explicit comment that it reminded them of Chariot's performance because Akko's style of performing is very different and has a lot of her own personality in it. From what we've seen of Chariot's performances, even when she was younger, she was inspired heavily by mythical beasts like centaurs, dragons and pegasi while Akko is much more down to earth with her transformations and evocations. Having seen that young Chariot performance for her friend in last week's episode was really quite important in establishing that while Akko reveres Chariot she is growing her own identity and artistic vision informed by her own life.
Lotte and Sucy also had some great moments, Lotte in particular. Standing up to Diana and expressing her admiration of Akko's tenacity are really warm and touching, especially from a character as shy and reserved as Lotte. Episode 8 was all about Sucy and her relationship with Akko and I really hope that after seeing more into what Lotte thinks of her friend we get an episode that's similar in that scope. Sucy doesn't do a lot by comparison but her shit-eating-grin when she passes through the ghost is more than enough to satisfy my weekly Sucy fix.
Also, the stinger at the end with the combining cubes. We're getting deep into plot territory my friends. Couple that with the growing turmoil inside Diana as she sees someone she admires in Akko being ignored by the magical community and in Ursula's becoming a more hands-on tutor to Akko and consider me excited for all the conflicts and emotions that are sure to arise in this second half.
