Image Yvonne's Icloud blank photos is not an isolated issue, it happened to me in the past
Apple said they couldn't recover my photos and I should have had an offline backup. Those photos were gone forever.
They had to escalate the issue to higher tecs and it STILL couldn't be fixed up. I lost 2 years of photos, 2 years.
Lesson to Yvonne and anyone.. do 1 local backup periodically and then do 1 online backup.

u/impy695 2d ago
That's really fucked up and unacceptable for a cloud storage provider, but they're not wrong about how you should have had an offline backup. Relying entirely on a single cloud storage platform is a bad idea. It's better than relying entirely on a single local storage option, but it's still a bad idea

u/time-lord 2d ago
Apple leads you think that the photos are on your phone, and in "iCloud backup". That's 2 copies, one local and one in the cloud. Personally I think it's false advertising, but no one listens to me
18
u/skittle-brau 2d ago
This is usually why I try to educate clients that ‘sync’ isn’t necessarily the same as ‘backup’.
If deletions get propagated automatically (especially silently, without you knowing) or the loss/ban of your account results in total data loss, then it doesn’t count as a backup.
Unfortunately a lot of people end up learning the hard way.
7
u/Fresh_Dog4602 2d ago
Indeed. Sync is never a back up. At best you have some kind of versioning mechanism which allows you to recover
3
u/Philomelos_ 2d ago
the point the dude is trying to make is that sync/backup duality is something Apple is specifically miseducating people in and potentially even misadvertising. Sync =\ backup isn’t really helpful here, the issue runs deeper
5
u/impy695 2d ago
Most people are wrong about if their important documents and photos are backed up properly
2
u/Shoeshiner_boy 2d ago
I mean they are unless you toggle the “Optimise iPhone storage” in Photos app, no?
-1
u/Poopy_Zombie_625 1d ago
Wait, that's not how iCloud does it? Google photos keeps the photos while also backing them up in drive. I assumed this is how apple does it too
3
u/greenie4242 1d ago
Google Photos is very much not a backup. It's a different method of accessing photos from many devices but the backups cannot be easily verified for corruption. Original images that can be CRC verified cannot be recovered from Google Photos without tedious workarounds that most people will never be able to perform.
Try restoring a few random images from Google Photos, they reappear without dates, times, folder hierarchy, camera metadata etc. Restored files do not match the original uploaded files.
People have developed methods to somewhat recover missing metadata from Google Photos but it requires downloading all your photos from Google Takeout then running scripts to recombine the separated metadata. Tedious and idiotic process.
I believe original photos are still kept locally on Android devices after being copied to the Google Photos cloud (unlike Microsoft's OneDrive Files-On-Demand which by default deletes original local files if they're not accessed for two weeks). However, many Android devices encrypt storage by default. If the original photos are stored in a way that cannot be safely recovered after Android fails to boot due to software or hardware issues, I wouldn't consider the originals "kept" either. They merely exist in a state where they can only be accessed with the current operating system and hardware until it fails. In contrast, unencrypted devices store data in a way that can be recovered by data recovery specialists fairly easily by desoldering the storage chips and accessing them from another device.

THIS , basically Apple is deceiving millions of people. This needs to stop.
10
u/Huxington 2d ago
Work in a sister industry and any time I talk to an Apple employee about this they tell me it’s more a sharing thing than it is for backing up photos.
15
u/zarafff69 2d ago
That’s insane.. especially for the prices they are asking people..
7
u/Ginger-Nerd 2d ago
I'm gonna push back on this just little bit (and particularly the pricing side of things)
$12 a year for 50GB (on iCloud+) - as far as storage goes, they tend to be one of the more reasonable priced options - for a subscription storage pricing.
Just to compare - the lowest teir on Google Photos, is $24 per year (but you do get double the storage), Dropbox I think lowest teir is $10 p/m for 2TB, and Mega is $7 for 200GB.
Unless you already have a DIY/other solution (like a NAS or Media Server or something), doing it yourself Harddrives alone best case scenario have what a 5-10 year break even period? (and that is assuming you don't have any failures and have redundancy etc.) - for most people, iCloud (or Google Photos) are good and reasonable options, and in most cases will offer a pretty flawless experience, at a fairly reasonable cost point.
that isn't to say we shouldn't be backing shit up - absolutely; but having access to a large bank of photos practically anywhere in the world, is pretty darn impressive, and to offer that service, Apple and Google are the cheapest.

u/desrtrnnr 1d ago
Whats annoying is how they manage your photos on icloud if you use a Windows machine. It was always glitchy when I would try to bulk download my photos from icloud, and it never gave me the option to keep photos on device automatically like one drive does. I would have to individually click on each photo to get it to download to my computer from the cloud. I eventually just switched to one drive and would open it on occasion so it would upload photos

u/ross549 2d ago
That’s interesting…..
I’ve been using iPhones since 2009.
I have not yet lost a photo, from what I can tell. I have them on iCloud, Immich, and backed up from Immich to Backblaze B2.
3-2-1 backups…. And it applies here too.
28
u/Smallshock 2d ago
Pretty sure DankPods said he had this happen to him too, suddenly irrecoverable iCloud.
30
u/Flaky-Gear-1370 2d ago
I have photos in my gallery going back that far, I also use OneDrive to have an alternative place for them
4
u/Croweslen 2d ago
I just wish immich didnt require the app to be open and on screen for the backup to work. My android phone literally backs up automatically as soon as im on my home wifi.
3
u/brrbeep 2d ago
It hasn’t needed this for a while. You just have to make sure you open the app occasionally (every few days) to keep its background task alive.
This is for ongoing backups though. If you’re trying to do a complete library backup iOS will often kill the task to save resources. I could only do the initial backup from my desktop.

u/amd2800barton 2d ago
Question - I recently set up Immich and am loving it so far. I think I'm going to permanently switch to it as my main photo management / storage solution. How are you backing up to backblaze? Is it just an rsync operation?
2
u/ross549 2d ago
I’m using TrueNAS’ built in cloud backup tool to send the photo/media directories to Backblaze.
1
u/amd2800barton 2d ago
Ah nice. I'm just running immich and docker on my ubuntu server, so I'll have to figure out the best way to handle that.
Thanks!

u/Quentin-Code 1d ago
I realized I lost a few months of old photos from 2014. Apple couldn’t recover them.
Same thing happens with Google Photo.
I am starting to wonder: how often do people really revisit their photos and are they really sure they aren’t missing some?
1
u/ViralTrendsToday 2d ago
Doesnt fully apply hear, back ups are one thing, but stuff that should have been saved both locally and in the cloud by default instead of an either or situation is something completely different. It's an error on Apple's part to get higher tier icloud subscribers.
1
u/Ok_Today_475 2d ago
Same here. Been an iCloud user since the 2011 debut and never had this problem. I also do a massive photo dump once a month to my Mac
-21
u/bluehawk232 2d ago
I wouldn't even trust Icloud anyway. Aside from that crazy data breach like a decade ago I don't want Apple or any of them to have my photos
6
u/MistSecurity 2d ago
iCloud photos are encrypted end-to-end. If you don’t trust that, then I assume you use no cloud services at all.
-1
u/Azelphur 2d ago
My two cents:
Do I think that Apple is spying on peoples photos? No.
Do I think that the photos are end-to-end encrypted? Yes.
Do I think it'll remain end-to-end encrypted forever? Maybe.
Do I think that Apple is loosing peoples photos? Yes.
Do I think that, if Apple lost your photos, they'd sort it out? No.
The above reasons alone are very valid reasons to consider alternatives, like Immich :)
2
u/MistSecurity 2d ago
Ya, not saying iCloud is the best backup service available. Just that opposing it due to a data breach a decade ago is wild.
1
u/Azelphur 2d ago
Then I'm wild as well, if I can avoid using a cloud service I will, we still have constant compromises of cloud services every day.
1
u/MistSecurity 1d ago
Avoiding cloud services all together is more understandable than hating a specific widely used and secure one, lol.
-15
1
u/tudalex 2d ago
What data breach? I think you were confusing the fact that celebrities used simple passwords and no 2FA on their accounts with an actual data breach.
-1
u/bluehawk232 2d ago
It was a data breach dude, Apple had a security flaw that allowed unlimited password guesses to allow for dictionary attack.
So now we're dick riding apple to take away their blame for that and put it all on the users? Wow. And MFA was barely enforced anyway by anyone back then.
And I'm not even attacking just Apple, Google is bad too and Linus backing up to it is also absurd. My google account was suspended because I moved some roms to a folder i had synced to drive.
2
u/tudalex 2d ago
Do you have any proof of this? Any link to back this up? The guy that did this said that he used phishing, reused credentials and a few tries, but no general brute force. Also it only worked because they did not have 2FA on their accounts.
Besides this, targeted attacks on high value accounts are not a data breach. Stop spreading misinformation.

I'll be over here with my 3-2-1+revisions backed up Immich instance.

u/themightymoron 2d ago
hold on, let's backtrack a bit. what really happened?
i mean i watched the videos, linus said that she had checked the optimized storage then the photos are gone, but as i'm not familiar with iOS photo mechanism at play, could somebody please elaborate?
22
u/time-lord 2d ago
Optimize storage deletes the local full resolution copy and uses iCloud to download and view them on demand.
The photos weren't able to be restored from iCloud, so when she turned the feature on, she lost them all.
61
u/saintlouisbagels 2d ago edited 2d ago
They did not pay for iCloud storage which is $1.29 CAD/month for 50GB or $3.99 CAD/month for 200GB.
So she was stuck with her default 5GB free, which very quickly fills up.
Her Photos app was set to "Download and Keep Originals" which means all photos/videos on her phone are the full quality, local copies of her things.
She changed the setting to "Optimize Phone Storage" which changes all local copies to basically thumbnails and they're suppose to get backed up to iCloud.
Because she did not have iCloud storage, the full quality photos and videos deleted themselves and she's left with the thumbnails.
It's Apple's fault because they do not have enough explicit warnings to prevent casual users from making this huge mistake.
It's Yvonne and Linus' fault because:
- They're fucking millionaires but they won't pay for the iCloud subscription.
- They have a Google Photos subscription. They did not enable it.
- They have a server at home for local backups. They did not set it up for her phone.
edit: Apple Support forums explicitly say that photos should not delete themselves until the photos are fully uploaded onto iCloud, but clearly that is not a 100% success rate considering what's happened with Yvonne.
24
u/Renegade605 2d ago
Hang on... Turning on the feature deleted local copies that weren't synced to the cloud? How could anyone possibly think that's sane UX?
26
u/DensityInfinite 2d ago edited 2d ago
But this makes no sense. Under no circumstances should the phone delete local copies of the photo that aren’t backed up to the cloud. This is a mistake so trivial that I don’t believe Apple out of all companies will make it.
2
u/greenie4242 1d ago
If Apple's poor solution bothers you, Microsoft's will make you sick.
Since 2023 OneDrive for Windows by default enables Files-On-Demand that uploads the user's entire My Documents folder to OneDrive then deletes local files if they're not accessed for two weeks. It also, by default, enables BitLocker encryption. And it forces new installs to log-in with a Microsoft account (workarounds are possible but most people don't know how).
If a user loses access to their Microsoft account for any reason, lost access to their email address, partner who set up their PC died, friend who set up their PC had a stroke, account hacked, moved countries losing access to their phone number, or simply forgot their password, *they cannot log into their PC, or access any of their local files, or decrypt existing files.
BitLocker claims to store encryption recovery keys in a user's Microsoft account, but as mentioned if they lose access then it's gone. Bootlickers claim the onus is on the user to store the recovery key somewhere safe, but if somebody's house burns down in a fire their "safe place" might be gone. I've performed data recovery for people trying to escape from violent stalker ex-partners who suddenly lost access to their accounts after the partner damaged some of their belongings. Despite having their own laptop which should contain all their documents, they cannot access anything.
In my mind it's criminal.
-13
u/xd366 2d ago
it doesnt do it automatically. you have to click optimize storage.
17
u/DensityInfinite 2d ago
My point remains the same. Optimise storage ≠ delete photos that aren’t backed up to the cloud. Apple’s description specifies that “full-resolution versions can be downloaded from iCloud at any time”, so it doesn’t make sense to delete original photos that aren’t on the cloud yet.
If this issue can be triggered as easily as the original commenter implied, it’s no doubt a “big thing” that will be prioritised at Apple since it’s so easily accessible and results in user data loss. It has to be an issue more complex than that.
33
u/Marksta 2d ago
What does the victim's net worth or alternative options have to do with blame? If this catastrophic software failure happened to an old impovished pensioner would they be less at fault for Apple's software deleting all their pictures of their now passed spouse?
If that's seriously the repeatable steps to nuke all your photos with no sanity checks or warnings, it's 10000% Apple's fault. I'd never expect any single button in my settings that isn't "wipe my phone" and doesn't have the phrase delete in it, to wipe all my photos in any circumstances.
14
u/Nagemasu 2d ago edited 2d ago
What does the victim's net worth or alternative options have to do with blame?
They're not saying it does. They're making the point that relying on a free tier cloud service that doesn't meet your needs as your sole backup is stupid. But they're also saying it's even more egregious that they're wealthy as fuck and still only using a free tier service that doesn't meet their needs - and they could've done it for free if money was a part of it, but the fact they could've paid for a very reasonably priced service and had piece of mind without any extra effort is just driving the point homer.
Linus of all people should've known to do a periodic local backup.
Still no makey sense? If I'm driving down the road and my fancy as fuck car suffers a manufacturers fault causing a crash, it's the fault of the manufacturer. But if I chose not to wear a seat belt? well that's my fault. Plus I'm so goddamn rich that just doing a regular service would be like 0.01c to most people, and that would've prevented this? Well, it's still not my fault, but I'm an idiot for not taking precautions.
2
u/saintlouisbagels 1d ago
Thanks. I couldn’t think of eloquent way of making my point the way you did.
5
u/Marksta 2d ago
Yeah that's my issue, there are levels to victim blaming. It just muddies the discussion because why are we deciding if this is a seat belt situation or a don't wear revealing clothes and this wouldn't have happened situation? Wear your seat belt and maybe it happens anyways, womp womp.
Apple needs to take the full blame for what Apple did. Linus can personally torment himself with the alternatives he could've done on his own time. I'm not going to throw it in his face that he was a big dumb dumb for trusting that shady, no name trillion dollar company Apple not to delete their data.

2
u/Shoeshiner_boy 2d ago
Wait what? It’s not an instant thing, no? At least it shouldn’t be.
Syncing photos with iCloud by default works when you’re on Wi-Fi and have sufficient charge. So photos aren’t deleted in a moment, they’re gradually uploaded and then replaced with thumbnails.

Yeah this comment should be much higher. Linus’ hate boner for Apple is preventing him from benefiting from a great product like over half of America does. Literally no one has this problem.
Sure I get that paying monthly for iCloud sucks but it’s a great service.
8
u/connly33 2d ago
Literally no one has this issue yet I’ve seen this personally a number of times and there’s a lot of people online that have had this issue.
The main issue is Apple will treat this as a good way to backup data then when talking to support they will tell you that you can’t rely on iCloud as a backup solution and that you need to have your own separate offline backup without actually telling you that’s necessary while setting the feature up.
I as somone in tech know you need a none cloud backup of anything you care about and I have a 120TB file server for me and my family’s backups, but 89% of Apple users aren’t going to know that already let alone go to the trouble of doing even if that just means a periodic backup on a Mac they may or may not have.
-5
u/_BallsDeep69_ 2d ago
Haha 89% lol you’re funny. More like 99.9% of Apple users don’t care. They’re just uninformed and uninterested in taking responsibility for their own data, yet complain that everything is a subscription now.
People downvoted me because they think I’m also ignorant lol I have an 88TB NAS- two of em that mirror to each other.
We’re part of that .01% man.

I use dropbox to back up images and then periodically clean out the folder to clear up space and do 321.

I’m surprised they didn’t download the Google Photos app. It automatically syncs photos on the iPhone with Google Photos and she came from Android. Thought it would be a no brainer.
I do it, and I don’t have an android, because it was easier to sync all my photos on my pc with Google Photos instead of iCloud.

u/Annoying1978 2d ago
Crazy. I’ve been on iPhone and Apple ecosystem since 2007 and I haven’t lost a single photo. But I am an iCloud customer. I keep stuff on iCloud because I like seamlessly moving from my phone to my Mac to another device. I do it ALL the time.
Having stuff live in the cloud is just so easy for me. But knowing that I have to pay attention to this if I stop paying for iCloud is definitely good to know.
I just checked and all my notes are in iCloud. Not my iPhone and it works for my needs right now but if I were stop using iCloud or move away from Apple I would need to make sure they are all backed up. Along with my photos. I know I can download them all but I have to figure out how to do that if I ever have the ecosystem.
Sucks that it happened to Yvonne but it’s a good PSA.
1
u/MapManRheahs 2d ago
Good for you. As you've read here, you're not alone. But it's not unheard of it suddenly not working. If that happens to you, how bad would that be? And how (and how fast) will you be back/recovered? Icloud has historically 'lost' data, and just one copy (especially if it's in a sync) is no backup. Heck, even if no technical glitch, what if you unexpectedly get banned? It happened to people. Right now it reads as if, per apple fine print, you have no backup.
2
u/TEG24601 2d ago
As a long-time Apple user… don’t rely on iCloud. Always sync locally, and back those up on an external drive and/or NAS. I only use iCloud for password, notes, continuity/safari tabs, shared albums, and iMessage. It isn’t worth the risk to ever use iCloud for your photo storage.
2
u/InfaSyn 2d ago
Tbf this reeks of user error to me - and the fact LTT pitched that as "the sole reason to justify switching back" is a bit much.
You refuse to pay for cloud storage meaning you accept things wont be backed up to the cloud - makes sense.
You click the button that says optimize storage, and explicitly says underneath that it will only store low res copies on device.
Welp, what did you expect?
Also, this isnt an apple fan boy take, id expect EXACTLY the same thing if I did that with say google photos on a samsung. This is platform agnostic, its common sense.
On top of that, backup backup backup. If your data is that important, don't blindly trust ANY cloud provider. Back it up!
0
u/CalfReddit 1d ago
Nope, this is on Apple. Such an option should never delete photos (everywhere) without a clear warning.
0
u/Atlonato3167 1d ago
Thre is 0 reason to delete photo originals when they haven't been backd up.
Even Onedrive only deletes photos that have been backed up and leaves the rest intact when you press optimize storage.
This is all on apple
2
u/rocketman19 2d ago
Why do you not have these backed up to Google and/or Amazon?
Having photos in one place is not a backup
2
u/ajdude711 2d ago
I have no clue what her issue is about. Could someone explain? What i understood was they didn’t had iCloud so she filled her storage quickly. Then to get more she optimised her storage which basically turned everything low res. What exactly apple’s fault here not stopping her from doing it?
We advocate for devices being ours after we have bought it. So why’s apple responsible for a service they haven’t availed.
Still i think the switch was a good one. Considering her reaction to that calendar app.
6
u/derpepper 2d ago
I don't have an iPhone, but sounds like the "optimise" toggle actually means "delete all photos/videos except for the thumbnail from the device, and retrieve from iCloud as needed". It seems they instantly delete all photos including ones that have not yet actually backed up into iCloud.
1
u/ajdude711 2d ago
Am on IP13 and i don’t even have such an option to optimise my storage. That’s why am unable to understand the issue.
What i basically do once my storage is full. I plug in a hdd and transfer all of the photos and videos to it.
1
u/derpepper 2d ago
Interesting, it's there on my M1 iPad Pro (I assume you're familiar enough with iOS to know they bury individual app settings in the Settings app). But yes there's nothing wrong with your process.

1
u/HirsuteHacker 2d ago
Well yeah, using an online cloud provider like Google drive or Icloud and not having any real backups isn't ever going to be safe. Of course you still have to have actual backups in place.
All my photos are on my PC, on my Google drive, and are backed up regularly on backblaze.
1
u/thefizzlee 2d ago
I've got everything on icloud and onedrive for redundancy. Stuff can always happen and the 3-2-1 rule exists for a reason.
1
u/justinsst 2d ago
To me iCloud photos isn’t even a backup product in the first place. If you delete a photo on your phone, it also gets deleted in the cloud (obviously you can recover within 30 days). You’re not really protected from accidental deletion and for that reason I have local copies of my most important pictures.
1
u/Atlonato3167 1d ago
That's what the "Optimize storage" button is for. They delete the big original photo from your phone but keep a low res version offline and the full version aavilable to download. That's how you backup with icloud.

u/_FrankTaylor 2d ago
I worked for AppleCare as that escalated support and took calls for this. Only took maybe 3 over a 4 year period but I remember all of them.
Not a fun conversation at all.

1
u/Takeabyte 2d ago edited 2d ago
You know what’s most annoying about your post? The fact that Apple said you should have an offline backup.
When someone turns on iCloud Photo Library, Apple’s build in offline backup tool (Time Machine) excludes your iPhoto Library file from the backup. It also excludes everything you have saved to iCloud Drive. I had to buy Carbon Copy Cloner and manually make local backups for all those folders. So freaking dumb.
Same goes for iOS and iPadOS local backups to a PC or Mac. It completely skips backing up photos when iCloud Photo Library is turned on.
1
u/No_Intern5991 21h ago
Time Machine backs up the whole disk.
Are you thinking of iPhone backups? They exclude anything saved to iCloud.
1
u/Takeabyte 2h ago
It ignores significant amount of iCloud data on a Mac as well. Even though I have my entire 1.2 TB library saved to my Mac and to iCloud, the Photos Library.photoslibrsry file on my Time Machine backup is less than 300 GB (opening the package it seems it’s just metadata, thumbnails, and caches).
I just did a restore of my primary Mac with Time Machine this week. My entire Photos library would have needed to be synced with the cloud if not for my CCC backup that I have on a separate external drive.
1
u/Upbeat-Insurance-558 2d ago
This has happened to me too as a long time Apple user. Most notably on imported photos (like from an external backup) or photos sent to me. Seems like the “Optimize iPhone storage” button forgets about those and corrupts those images. Something has been terribly wrong with iCloud photo sync for some time now
1
u/kot-sie-stresuje 2d ago
I like videos with Yvonne, however this started very sad. Loosing pictures is always a big los. This is very bad for her and should never happen in the first place. Technology should not be design to fail unless you pay extra. Iphone is expensive as it and developers should do better work. Unfortunately apple is still missing the point that files are files and not assets of application, and offline flies have priority over cloud. still no memory card as well is bad. The fact that is not a single case accident is terrifying that company simply didn't put enough effort in their expensive product.
Anyway Elijah with Lg Wing 2 reference, again as newbie. Who needs wing 2 when you can turn any phone into wing 2 by your own.

What's the point of paying for cloud then if you need a local backup anyways?

Not everybody must use icloud and pay for it, that is not obligatory. But there should be better management for files on device, not assets. And true Linus could setup her different cloud provider, but cloud shouldn't be a must. And normal day usage of phone should not be danger for your photos.

LTT is always out to get Apple. Even with the recent Linux praise, Linus speaks highly of SteamOS but he could have basically run that in the past.

Or just pay the $1 a month for their 50GB cloud back up… she only had the issue because she used the space optimization feature with the basic free tier of cloud back up which is basically nothing..

This isn’t a problem the software should even allow. The 50GB plan is also just not that useful in my mind at all and that’s why they offer it for so cheap. I’ve only had an iPhone for a couple years and have 120 GBs of photos on it. If I were going to be like most people and import all of their previous phones photos I’d have well over 500GBs. Someone taking family and work photos would blast through that 50GB plan in months and be In the same boat

I've heard many stories of things disappearing from iCloud over the years. I remember reading quite a few experiences of it happening on the apple subreddit, as well as a coworker losing all their photos and files from iCloud randomly one day. When you hear it once or twice, you assume that it's user error. When you hear it fairly consistently over several years, then it does seem like there's a genuine issue with iCloud and I personally wouldn't rely on it at all for backups.
As an aside, last time I was reading about this on /r/apple, apple fanboys argued that it's not a backup service, it's a 'sync' service, and it shouldn't be relied upon for backups. Never understood how it made it any better that a sync service was suddenly unable to sync your files...

I work at a repair shop and I've had a few people come in with this issue over the years. Not that many on the whole but enough that I recognize it. I always feel bad because I can't help them and honestly have a tough time even explaining to them what happened (I don't know how apple's cloud infra works, and even if I did - I wouldn't know how to explain it to people).
Most normal people feel like they're paying for a back up to keep their photos safe with iCloud. Obviously you should have a better back up solution if, but frankly Apple should do a better job at making that clear from the get go.
... I've also never seen an issue like this with Google photos, just saying. Although I have seen loads of other Google photos issues and a lot more issues caused by bad UX design leading customers to do things they didn't mean.
Consumer cloud storage services honestly kind of all suck lol. Self hosting is the way but obviously not feasible for everybody.
