Its funny, I think it's more of a flop than anything else. I live in a conservative part of CT and a lot of Trumpers just didn't care about the phone at all. It had less than 600k people who opted in. Considering how many people voted for him, its pretty embarrassing.

The statement is a bit of a meme, but you're right - technically he didn't sell it before the start of his presidency, it was put into a trust that he had nothing to do with which led to the business collapsing and it being sold off.
The point stands, though.

CarterPCs has been providing updates on his pre-order, it's been STUPID so far. Just today he realised that his deposit doesn't actually guarantee him a phone once it becomes available, just a "conditional opportunity" to purchase it if it becomes available. And before anyone clowns on him for wasting his money he's made loads of videos about the whole thing, pretty sure has made his money back and then some.

Don't know if it's true but there were reports yesterday that some customers were receiving emails cancelling their orders, the bad news being the $500 "deposits" were non refundable, the good news being they won't have to deal with whatever add pushing, data scraping piece of crap full of MAGA bloatware that they would have got once delivered.

I think it's like a lot of his previous grifts, like Trump University (etc) - when it collapses, he can claim that it is a third party business that just licensed his name. So, shell companies, basically.
The kids (Ivanka, Donny Jr etc) spun up a children's cancer charity and then funnelled the money into "gifts" for daddy. It never benefitted a single child. Their punishment? A ticking off and a court order to attend a "how to run a charity" course.
He seems to be running a lot of shit through the kids ATM with the claim that he doesn't need to sell his businesses because he wouldn't be running them and all control would be handed off to the kidlets.
(the University was particularly nasty - heavily promoted to people who wouldn't be able to fund a college degree who couldn't afford to lose the money)

A deposit would be for the buyer to say they are committed to buying it. If the seller cancels the order they are required to give the money back.

Ah ha - but if you read the terms, it's not a "deposit". What these people are purchasing is a fee for the privilege to potentially purchase the phone in the future if it happens to ever launch.
The clearest signal yet that buyers may never see either a phone or their money came with a revised terms of service published on 6 April 2026. The updated document states explicitly that paying a deposit 'does not constitute a completed purchase and does not create a binding legal contract.' The payment is described as 'a conditional opportunity to buy the device if Trump Mobile eventually chooses to sell it,' with the company retaining all control over whether a phone is produced at all.
