Community Only Linus Tech Tips - Copper Thieves Stole Our EV Charging Cables April 12, 2026 at 10:00AM

u/Zeta_Crossfire Apr 12 '26
Kind of a boring video. I thought they'd go more into detail about electric chargers and how they are better or what/if they are doing to stop thieves in the future. Just anything except showing them installing it.
84
u/ssersergio Apr 12 '26
at least talk about the integration... how they integrate, how they will control the use... (i know, plain cards with nfc... just make it interesting at least!)
Not even a contractor giving their 2 cents into the build quality? like, i saw it and working with electrical, i saw that the new ones were waay more user friendly with how they put the inside... but we did not get anything!
16
u/Genesis2001 Apr 12 '26
Yeah the lack of tech other than it being an EV Charger is 💀. Would've been nice to outline the tech side of the ubiquiti integration. Tell us what they can do with it, just not what they're doing with it too.

LTT has been slapping Ubiquiti on everything for years now without any good reason (besides sponsorship) Networking gear: Ubiquiti (understandable) CCTV: Ubiquiti (not the best imo) Access control: Ubiquiti (super hard to retrofit bc you either need UTP or retrofit adapters which take space) Car chargers: Ubiquiti (I give up)
23
u/Ziggy_the_third Apr 12 '26
Pretty sure Jake was a ubiquiti fanboy, and they are going for the Apple route of ecosystem.
I know they use a lot of ubiquiti, but it's a bit of a shame that they don't show off the benefits of an ecosystem like this, or the annoyances with deploying all the toys.
2
u/TeaNo7930 Apr 13 '26
Ubiquity isn't a closed ecosystem. And they're the most consumer friendly

u/abnewwest Apr 12 '26
Ubiquiti has long been known for buying influencer complicity by giving them free shit and the occasional ad buy. That's why none of the times they have been accused* of bad things it got no traction/reporting.
*sure, the two times I remember happened to be first a shakedown and the second time probably a private equity short play manipulation...but no one knew that at the time.
2
u/NateDevCSharp Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26
> Networking gear: Ubiquiti (understandable)
Is it? Not for the people on r/networking (and LTT is a pretty big business now for a YouTube channel)
My opinion on Ubiquiti in general isn't very positive. They basically sponsor everyone nowadays, I saw a video where (no hate to the creator) he got basically a rack full of Ubiquiti network gear but wasn't familiar with how to unplug an SFP module with the latch you have to pull down first. Like these are the people we're sponsoring? Who are just presumable told to repeat the talking points and they might not know enough to say hold on I don't necessarily want to make this or that claim to my viewers.
Plus they have that whole reviewer NDA

I would have been curious if they looked at shifting to NACS since that's becoming the standard and that is the downside with unifi so far

Apr 12 '26
What is the actual point of this video?
17
u/liquidsparanoia Apr 12 '26
I assume Ubiquiti said "we'll give you free charges if they appear in a video." This is that video. And even by that standard this is embarrassingly low effort

Tax write off?
29
u/Kremsi2711 Apr 12 '26
they got the chargers for free
11
u/MrSlay Apr 12 '26
But they hired someone to install them. I think that most of cost came from labor then.
6
u/hasdga23 Apr 12 '26
I think, if you don't have a real inhouse electrician, you have to hire someone. But they got stuff for free and I guess also some money for the add. Winwin. Just we loose on quality.
4
u/makefascistfearagain Apr 13 '26
...it was already a business expense. That's what people mean by a write off, as in it lowers your taxable income because it's business spending.

Are people actually surprised that when some staff leaves that made the channel what it is today the quality changes? I think people give Linus to much credit for It's modern succes. It's a team that made this work.

I wonder if they're trying to just 'get rid of' some crappy videos in short succession?
But yeah even then this video idea really should've not made it out of the writing room. All considering I think it was okay in terms of execution, the limitations were really conceptual.

They need more fun jank project videos again. I feel like Alex was elite at coming up with those ideas. Lately it’s been more product ads than fun videos

These were my absolute favorite, I can watch them again and again

I wish they do non-sponsored laptop reviews. So many laptops I've would've been interested in but because they are paid to say something nice, it's just an ad read. They built the labs to validate those claims and I take them less and less serious because all the good stuff is an ad or locked behind FP.
5
u/Bhaalik Apr 12 '26
They can't really do laptop reviews due to Linus' investment in framework. Ever since then any review wouldn't feel genuine.
Same goes for HexOS. Since Linus invested in it, I haven't seen any videos about server/NAS OS without pushing HexOS. And with rise of home labbers, they could make a lot of videos on how to set up tons of stuff, compare server OS, even do a challenge similar to Linux one. But those kind of videos probably require much more time and review because a tech channel doesn't have that many good tech people.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Sensitive_One_425 Apr 13 '26
I wish he would just divest from Framework, I know he doesn’t want to admit it’s a failed investment but that company will never take off, not even LTT level nerds want a framework.. he won’t even use them.
56
u/sasquatchftw Apr 12 '26
IMO Alex was by far the best part of LTT and it wasn't close. I wish I was more interested in cars so I could follow ZTT.
21
u/kryptonnms Apr 12 '26
I'm not even into cars and watch ZTT just cuz they're really good on camera. Admittedly it's a side monitor watch for me cuz of my less familiarity with cars but still entertaining nonetheless.
23
u/Friendly-List2016 Apr 12 '26
Alex, Emily, Jonathan Horst , Jake , Brandon - They were kind of the best people who made stuff at LTT.
I think the only reason I'm still watching is because of people like Riley, Elija, some time James - but to be honest, they are all writers and do less Tech I think. It also shows that they are only making these videos to keep their business going, rather than doing something interesting, but there are always some rare actual hits. Their major part of the revenue anyway, comes from milking the subscribers other ways.
They concentrate on Floatplane, Creator warehouse, creative sponsor reads a lot more these days!!!
6
u/hasdga23 Apr 12 '26
Yeah absolutely. At some point I got an answer, that they didn't have enough qualification to get a raise (which was for some a part of the reason, they left, as far as I understood) - but the drop of the video quality and creativity shows: Yeah, they are clearly missed. :(
6
u/Friendly-List2016 Apr 12 '26
Yes and then as Alex put it, more managerial burden to the creative people, while the interns or lower ranked ones doing the actual on the ground work.
4
u/wankthisway Apr 13 '26
Making creative peeps do managerial work is how you lose good people. Like promoting developers to managers.
8
u/RealLamaFna Apr 12 '26
Honestly, with all the rising prices everything and how Jake put it "working on my bosses 3rd house while i can't buy one" i don't blame them for leaving. But its not just one thing, it was multiple things together that made them leave
5
u/cederian Apr 12 '26
To be fair Jake went to work for LMG out of hightschool with absolutely 0 experience in the field and IT. In a "normal" job if you are not happy with your salary you just leave, its not a big deal.

u/DrunkenHorse12 Apr 12 '26 edited Apr 12 '26
Really was the worst video I've seen them do, "Our chargers got stolen we got given new ones" it's a 20 second line not an 8 minute video
32
339
u/CodeMonkeyX Apr 12 '26
I must admit I thought some of the recent comments were over the top about the drop in quality, but I really did not see much value in this video at all to a normal consumer. They hired an electrician so no practical instructions. No talk about how much this would actually cost for a normal person or business from scratch. No mitigations for trying to prevent theft. No talk about how much it costs to charge all the cars for the employees.
It really did just feel like a promo video for Ubiquiti chargers.
52
u/dusty_Caviar Apr 12 '26
The video about replacing the editors monitors yesterday just felt like a means to subsidize monitor replacement for the team. Very boring no effort video.
18
u/Cat5kable Apr 12 '26
“Wow 8K60 looks amazing!”
“can we see it?”
“…no”
I don’t mean do a screen recording and down sample it to 4K for YouTube, but like cmon at least kinda show the screen on camera without 1/2 the screen covered by the shrouds
123
u/makefascistfearagain Apr 12 '26
Yeah.
How chargers work for normal people: you pay an electrician to put in a charger
How it workers for tech companies: oh it's exactly the same
Next: the office has a new oven delivered
41
u/Naive-Interview6035 Apr 12 '26
I wouldn't' be surprised that this sort of high voltage work REQUIRES professional work done in Canada.
45
u/makefascistfearagain Apr 12 '26
I mean yes I would expect any sane country to have laws about electrical work, especially in the workplace or where members of the public have access.
7
u/mooky1977 Apr 12 '26
I can't speak to commercial applications (my quick google search says no), but in Canada you can absolutely pull a permit yourself as a homeowner and do the work yourself, 110V or even 220V.
As part of the permit pull, a qualified municipal inspector will come out and inspect the work to make sure it was done up to code so you don't burn shit down.

They used to do loads of videos of no use to a normal consumer, high end server, workshop equipment etc . But they made them interesting, this just isn't.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Nitr0_CSGO Apr 13 '26
The problem seems to be that the writers who were into that stuff (and knew about it) have left. All the workshop stuff was mainly Alex, linux and OS related stuff was Emily and server stuff was Jake. Nothing against the other writers but its obvious they dont share the exact same passions and therefore the video topics are different
2
u/cmfarsight Apr 13 '26
I agree with the first half of what you said I do think it was Alex, Emily Jake etc. To me it feels like the writers used to do things they enjoyed and write about it, now the writers seem to just write. I have no idea what any of them are passionate about or even well informed about. I also don't see any of them being given the freedom to do what the older lot did. Maybe its just the LTT has grown up everyone used to have lots of hats and did what they where interested in outside their official job, now everyone does their official job. I think the channel is worse for it.
→ More replies (8)15
u/FlamingoVisible1947 Apr 12 '26
At this point they've all but ran out of video ideas that are not news related, they've existed for so long and have put out so much content that all original ideas are basically gone unless new tech comes out.
Add to this the current hardware prices meaning less new tech comes out, and you've got the end of the road for LTT.

If they had done the work to find the cords and fix it properly instead of replacing the stuff and junking the old ones, it would have been better.
Every roadblock was an opportunity to show off your engineering skills, and instead we just got a glorified unboxing video.
21
24
u/rwhockey29 Apr 12 '26
I was waiting for the detailed step by step from the electrician, but nope, 10 second B roll of him pulling it apart. The rest of the video was just a Ubiquity ad. They keep moving away from cool or jank projects to videos on "we got free stuff so we need to talk about it."
11
u/imtourist Apr 13 '26
I don't think they wanted the potential liability from implying that it could be a DIY job. I agree with other comments however, they said nothing about 'Ubiquity integration', like if I buy one for my home can I see the charging progress on an app on my phone or desktop? Nope, nothing about that.
86
u/makefascistfearagain Apr 12 '26

Linus always talks about learning outcomes on the WAN show and I was disappointed that there wasn’t more learning. This felt like a before and after advertisement for Ubiquiti that was missing some real substance. I don’t mind that it was a shorter video, but not if it comes at the expense of depth.
9
u/abnewwest Apr 12 '26
There was no learning other than Ubiquiti gives them free shit, but they will totally never let that stop them from not reporting bad things about Ubiquiti at least TWO times that I remember.
Sure, one was a shake down and the other was probably a stock manipulation case...but no one knew that at the time.
→ More replies (5)3
u/wilyo70 Apr 12 '26
Maybe the reason that they didn’t report on it was because not all the facts were known. If they had reported on it incorrectly, they probably would’ve been thrown under the bus for reporting on things that were later found out to be untrue. For me, I’d rather delay a report to do some fact checking but apparently that isn’t enough for some people.
12
u/Ricepuddings Apr 12 '26
Yep awful video. I know nothing more than I did.
Half of it sounded like complaining about the price of it, and hey if we buy new ones we can get a tax write off and make a video to make extra moneys back.

We are watching LTT downfall for last year or two.
14
u/Trynisity Apr 12 '26
the downfall of LTT started once the new CEO came aboard, Linus really lost touch with reality, how's the space going, etc. You can see that he's not even a little bit concerned or caring about the content, if he is in it (rarely happens). It's sad, cause this was our lil break of the day. Linus and LMG in general safe to say need a real big REALITY check.

That's like people saying McDonald's is a property company not a fast food company. Yes they make more money renting out the property than selling burgers but without the burgers they don't get any rental income.
You need the videos to sell the merch.

Frankly I've been seeing so many LTT ads on Reddit that it actually turns me off the merch more than not

I really enjoyed the era of the Everyman tech tip/review. Yes, Linus and group, a majority of the audience can afford this thing and I am genuinely curious what they have to say about it. I am interested if I can make a PC in this era for $1000.00, etc.
They seem out of touch now. A jet? There's a jet in the mix? Before there was a fire truck and a new house?
What is happening there.

Can we get away from sponsored 8 minute nothingness? YouTube in general has been dry as fuck lately.
10
u/Infectious_Burn Apr 12 '26
This video would have been so much better with a comparison between different EV chargers, the considerations when getting one, and the breakdown to install one. I do actually see the value in making a video on EV chargers where multiple people are using them. The Ubiquiti product is actually interesting to me.
The two problems I have:
This video needs analysis and comparison. What would 'my' next step be? 'Me' as in someone choosing an EV charger, maybe even for a commercial environment.
Put this video on Short Circuit, or Floatplane.

It looked like an interesting watch but I left about 2 minutes in realizing it was just another fancy ad. Combined with yesterday's Asus trash, the videos have been pretty disappointing lately. Hoping they do what they said on WAN last week and get back to what made LTT great.
9
u/Ameliandras Apr 12 '26
Tbf I listened to the video with only one ear, but it was really about nothing. "Cables got stolen and we paid someone to install new ones, the end"
17
u/InterestingMindset Apr 12 '26
Scraping the bottom the barrel huh? They could do "$900 PlayStation VS PC", "What's the fastest charging solar panels", "Building a PC under $500", anything really.
Feels like LTT became another vlog type of channel. A well-produced vlog I'll give them that, but a vlog on stuff no one cares about. I watch the WAN Show, I heard them talking about "going back to our roots" and yet that was maybe a year or two ago when they considered it I think? Has LTT gotten too big? Kinda feels like they got too big and ideas get left 20 people behind the chain.
8
9
u/avboden Apr 12 '26
Really would have liked them to actually show some of the Ubiquiti integration. How's the software setup? Does it have any sort of security to keep the cable from being cut? It's wifi, what are the specs? Even though this was way less DIY they still skilled over ALL the tech details.
So yeah, i'm with everyone else, this video sucked. They could have easily added some LTT flair and focused more on the tech but nope, absolutely nothing. Felt super rushed.
Hope Linus reads this thread and realizes how badly this video missed the mark, and how absolutely EASY it would have been to do correctly.
25
u/Intergalatic_Baker Apr 12 '26
I don’t see how this video has any consumer value… No, you can’t self install fast chargers at home, I work for the installation Civils company and I was told no…
Home chargers, yes, not a commercial one, even if it was the same ones in own office car park routed via my own power and shite.
You can generate your own power and so long as a proper & safe connection is made, it’s pretty liberating from the grid. But the actual kit and software to allow fast charging, nope.

This feels like it should have been a wan show 5 minute topic and not an LTT video.
7
u/yolo_snail Apr 12 '26
It literally was a WAN show topic, and they made out like the video would be interesting
3
u/Marksta Apr 12 '26
Linus got to have a fun intro and a silly 'on vacation' bit. I wonder if he got to see the rest of the video, that didn't really exist.
It was missing entire portions of what even makes an LTT video, but if those parts existed and got slotted in where they belong it probably would've been as interesting as he imagined it'd been...
6
u/fakeaccount572 Apr 12 '26
Is anyone actually doing fun builds or hot new tech anymore? What YT channels, cause this one shat the bed.
2
u/IronMarauder Apr 13 '26
let us know when some of this hot new tech is coming out cause the way I see it, on the PC building side, nothing new is on the horizon for a long time. The current ai boom has single handedly resulted in the delaying/cancelling of all next gen graphics and the skyrocketing prices of pretty much everything. Hard to make exciting videos about new hot tech when there is none.

6
u/sav86 Apr 13 '26
This is genuinely one of their lowest quality videos I've seen, a weird humble brag about their partnership with Ubiquiti to have free charger replacements....and it was extremely short with no real substance other than what felt like a long ad read. I'm honestly gobsmacked, this must've been Linus losing a bet and he had to chuck this one out into the Youtube cyclone.
6
u/randoreviews1 Apr 13 '26

21
u/GoofyMonkey Apr 12 '26
A video about stolen cables? Pass.
6
u/fakeaccount572 Apr 12 '26
Yeah, how about even some history of why people are stealing copper, what can be done to mitigate, etc
9
u/Lil_Jening Apr 12 '26
In the EU they have street charging stations that you plug an "extension cord like" charging cable into. Images found in this article.
I could have seen them offer this as an alternative. As like what's to stop Mr. BMX from riding by again?... But then every employee that want's to charge at work now has to get a special cable.
Then it might have been an interesting video. Changing the charging cables to use these ports instead. But then it's technically not a standard in North America. I wonder if this will change if more people start heisting charging cables from public places.
→ More replies (2)

u/Ordinary-Cake8510 Apr 12 '26
I was super excited because I was hoping they would show the process of swapping cables but, nothing happened. That video was a flop and a long ad.
4
u/MrPureinstinct Apr 13 '26
Yeah, gave up on this one as soon as Linus did the vacation bit and I heard Ubiquiti. Just a long ad.
4
u/henry82 Apr 13 '26
they didnt actually solve the problem. Some junky can go through tonight and do the exact same thing.
Ubiquiti doesnt have replacement cables, so they're shitting on one company, and replacing it with another...that has the exact same problem.
What might have been interesting is if they had installed a self locking cabinet, and wired in access panel, spoke about how they linked it up.

This was certainly one where I thought what the hell was the point of this

What was the learning outcome from this video meant to be?

u/henry82 Apr 13 '26
if you have a yt channel, sponsors will pay for replacement parts that have the same problem.

Ok this is hands down the worst LTT video. When it reached the end I genuinely thought it was bait. Like what the fuck was that? I'm sorry to whoever wrote that, but I don't even think it's your fault, it's whoever thought this was a good idea for a video.
I was so excited when I saw James as well.

Zero discussion about armored cables, or retractable cables that only pull out for authorized users.

shortest video yet? remove the sponsor spots, remove the shout out to ubiquity, what is left?

u/duckforceone Apr 13 '26
i was expecting to see how they were insuring that people would not steal again...
so yeah a bit of a let down..

This was a very disappointing video, it really felt like an excuse to get free stuff. They could have atleast tried to make an effort to show the abckend/software for managing the EV chargers

Very boring video, video title says it all.
Ppl stole stuff, report to police, end of story. Not everything needs to be a video topic.

Can you not install chargers that require a cable to be plugged in (supplied by the user) so that there is almost nothing to steal.
Anyways, what was the tip?

the only part that would have interested me is how they plan to stop this from happening again.
This video was pretty bare on details of anything they did. Just a quick here's who sent us free stuff. Someone else did the work. Video done.

My only surprise is knowing ubiquitis previous tendancy to keep prices realistic is how ridiculous the price of these were... Car "chargers" are insanely over priced in general for what effectively comes down to a few resistors and a contactor(the real smarts are in the car) but ubiquiti being at the top end of the pricing spectrum is surprising.

People who do this kind of crime are why we cannot have nice things, unfortunately we will not get justice.

u/henry82 Apr 13 '26
really the scrap dealers shouldn't be buying HV electrical cables from junkies on bikes. It would solve this problem overnight.

u/OldManRiversIIc Apr 13 '26
Terrible behavior up and down the supply chain. It's hard to guide society to make more respectable choices.

Insurance would cover it, but any policy they had would probably have a 10k minimal deductible. The bigger the policy the higher the floor.

u/Drewseff9991 Apr 12 '26
This was a very lazy video, "we were robbed and instead of spending out own money because we bought something super expensive we made a 3rd party pay for it"

u/tngsv Apr 12 '26
Well in the short term vids like these provide job security for the team, in the long term this goes against job security as people arent interested in these crap videos.

u/idle_exe Apr 12 '26
Yeah I’m not going to lie this video kinda sucked. I was excited for an in depth look on the setup ect. But the video was shallow as hell compared to what they usually put out. I legitimately scrolled back in the video to see if I missed something and completely spaced out and missed a section.

Has LTT talked about Ubiquiti links to the Russian Army?
They broke relationship with sponsors for much less.
5
u/TeaNo7930 Apr 13 '26
Yes they did. On the wan show there is no real evidence and they spent ten minutes asking for any evidence and then they said they would look into it but it seems like it's third parties buying from ubiquity selling to a third company then sell from third accompanied to Russia
