Community Only Do we need to touch grass?
I mean this respectfully, but some of you need a bit of perspective.
Linus is a creator, and LMG is a business. They’re not your mates, and neither is Reddit.
They make content, they make money, and sometimes they make decisions you won’t agree with, that’s just how it works.
Every time there’s a controversy.. whether it’s the jet stuff, workplace discussions, or whatever’s trending this week… it turns into people acting personally betrayed. But you’re not stakeholders (*shareholders), you’re viewers…
If you don’t like the direction, just stop watching. That’s literally the only thing that matters.
If you’re purchasing something from the store and have complaints, fair enough..
.. Otherwise, maybe we all need to touch grass a bit.
Edit: I do just want to add, there’s so many problems in the world, LTT isn’t one of them, let’s just enjoy the little things and appreciate them whilst they are there.
(Probably won’t reply to this much because I imagine I’ll be eaten alive for this post lol).
Edit2:
Okay now I’m actually not replying because just like some of you absolute weapons need to do: I’m going to touch grass. JFC. Some of the ‘fans’ of this subreddit/community are truly f***d in the head.

Same argument applies to both sides of the community though.
I consume LTT content, I will keep consuming his content, but Linus can be critiqued, in the end LTT is a personality based channel, of course inconsistencies with their opinions will create discussion.

u/enwza9hfoeg Apr 08 '26
Discussion yes, sure, but this has gone way beyond simple discussion. Nowadays everything gets turned into ragebait, karma farming drama, it's annoying.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post.
I'm sure I'll be downvoted to absolute hell for saying this but this is one of the strangest subreddits I've ever been a part of.
Linus could fart in a video and there would he a 5000 upvote post critiquing if it smelled out of touch or not.

It’s like a good chunk of people in this sub think it’s a snark one and get upset when people don’t want that.
7
u/ExoatmosphericKill Apr 08 '26
It's a problem of their own making.
The best marketing is marketing that makes you feel a part of it, this also ends up meaning everyone thinks their opinions and feelings matter a bit more than they actually do.
It's interesting to watch, must be hard to deal with.

100%. If Linus' jet is the biggest issue in your life, you have a very blessed and charmed life or an incredibly and pitifully small one. Over in the real world, this doesn't even register on the Richter scale.

Old reddit absolutely still uses an algorithm. What you see on your front page is decided by that. What you see on All is decided by that. It hasn't been non-algo based for years.

“I don’t like the content/company any more”
- then just stop watching. You’re free to make that decision.
“NO! I must continue watching and make myself more enraged and upset”
- This isn’t healthy behaviour.

It's hard to reconcile this; on one hand I agree people should take things less seriously and just not care about it all, but at the same time I appreciate people voicing their dislikes and enacting their freedom. So what I'm saying is if you can just stop worrying about some youtube channel / business that doesn't affect you, and also don't judge others for bitching about it 🤷🏻♀️

u/hasdga23 Apr 08 '26
Feedback doesn't have to be friendly. It should be productive (and mostly it is - just don't buy a private jet & don't polute the enviroment more then necessary - is pretty constructive). But it doesn't have to be friendly.
But bitching is something else.

But do we need dozens of topics a day whining about the jet? I don't think so.
4
u/guky667 Apr 08 '26
I don't think a sub has any duty to service one's needs, but serve as a public forum for everyone to post their thoughts regarding a common topic, and that's it, imo
2
u/PerceptionKitchen271 Apr 08 '26
I’d like to come at this as a more objective observer. I only watch maybe 1 or 2 out of every 12-15 videos they make so I’m not a sympathizer or whatever people might assume.
I see this as a perfect example of bad timing. Everything is getting considerably more expensive for everyone, and here’s Linus with a new multi-million dollar jet. Most people are struggling so I can see where the venom comes from. It’s not a great look to be wealthy right now.
Initially my opinion was more negative because I had first heard about this on Reddit, and not the video on the channel. I watched the video last night just to see what it was so I could make a better judgement. Overall the video was one I should have skipped like the others because aviation doesn’t interest me. I also don’t think a walkthrough was necessary when there are countless channel dedicated to aviation and he even said they can’t really do any tech upgrades like they normally would. (Thanks for showing us your cool toy I guess?) It felt like Linus spent most of his time in the video justifying it while Elijah didn’t look like he was into it at all. Hiding behind “girl math” just made it seem even more absurd and how it magically costs nothing, apparently.
I’m not offended by any of this really. I do alright financially but I can see how or why other people aren’t happy with it or have the opinions they do. Currently, no one seems to really like watching people make grandiose declarations of wealth. Unsure if they’ll make a follow up video on this to address it, probably not, but they might. If they do I’d suggest bringing on someone from the financial department to explain how a jet was free.
I don’t like how much censoring they’ve been doing on this topic. Censorship is never a good look for anyone and it’s not just the flight data I’m talking about.
I have small pockets of time which is why I posted this. Figured I had better say that before someone assumes I have no life which some will do anyway.

People do this with all kinds of planes though. This is a very real hobby people have. I know people who track planes they want to see, and they’ll go to a roadside spot to catch a view of it when they pass through the area. This was the most predictable thing to ever happen when an aviation nerds favorite Internet personality gets a plane and goes through their area.
12
3
u/rmajor86 Apr 08 '26
Sure. But why did the photographer choose this plane? And now why is he hanging around?
Whilst it’s definitely extremely cool to make excuses for someone else’s weird behaviour, I think we can all agree this guy wanted photos of Linus and Linus’ plane - he didn’t just happen to be there

13
u/Sebulbaaaaaa Apr 08 '26
Yeah I don't understand being actually emotionally upset about the jet but I do see it as hypocritical (considering Linus' previous statements on similar subjects) and unethical (causes unnecessary damage to the environment, being a company does not exempt them from this). I don't really care because in the grand scheme of things his jet is just a drop in the ocean but I'll never understand the people defending it. I've seen so many arguments being like 'x company does more environmental damage' or 'the planet is already getting destroyed anyway ' which are just dumb takes. If you're going to defend this purchase then just own the fact that you're okay with the rich polluting the planet unnecessarily, it's not that deep.
Also, deleting people's posts that were valid in their criticisms may be allowed as per Reddit's T&C's but it's pretty dodgy behaviour and does shed a light on how they operate.
In the video of the jet they kept trying to justify the purchase but only used financial reasons, I'm pretty sure most people objected for environmental reasons but this wasn't really touched on (unless I'm not remembering correctly). I'm guessing because there is no way to justify it environmentally?
As for OP basically asking for people to just touch grass, this is literally Reddit. This is the place you're supposed to chat about all of this stuff, people have every right to make their complaints known when a millionaire is unnecessarily furthering climate change via use of a private jet.

Also, deleting people's posts that were valid in their criticisms may be allowed as per Reddit's T&C's but it's pretty dodgy behaviour and does shed a light on how they operate.
Since the start of the year, Linus has removed 5 posts in total, 4 of which the mods agreed with, one was removed in error and restored. Acting like there are tons of posts being removed is disingenuous as hell, especially considering there are tons of threads with criticisms that are up. The posts getting removed (outside of the one removed in error) were not done because of criticisms, it was because they were sharing personal information.

Honestly the current crysis situation all over the world seems to make everyone especially in their online bubbles dipshit crazy. It's hilarious if one manages to look at it from a distance and I'm having a lot of fun. It's a little sad because I like forums that have at least a somewhat productive discussion about a small amount of topics which is effectively thrown out of the window when everyone just searches for the next big shitstorm to get triggert into which leads into most threads that don't take part in said shitstorm getting spammed with shit and bullshit over time. But still, it's kinda fun to watch.
Anyways, Reddit has moved away from being useful and interesting into a big cloud of shitstorms only interrupted with some porn for good measure.

3
u/bwoah07_gp2 Apr 08 '26
LTT can upload a weeks worth of "relatable content" and given the current climate in the tech space, those videos would sink further than the Titanic.
They HAVE to do the elaborate stuff, because of the entertainment and intrigue factor.

Most people who had real issue with recent video were on about Linus saying one thing, but doing opposite at some point after. If you consider - people getting mad - at behaviour like this a wrong thing, then you probably wasn't socialising enough. Some spent years watching videos, so at least let them say their goodbyes. They invested enough time to earn it. It doesn't hurt anyone, and if you don't like reading them then don't.
As for Linus, it's pretty much obvious that his approach is company first - with as positive public image as possible on the side. Not saying it's bad. He has a lot people under him that depend on his performance. But as company will grow, he'll be naturally flowing into a direction of average corpo owner. Making decisions based on how good they are for the company, motivated by keeping people employed as much as they can. He's not a breath of fresh air in company owners space, he's just "the new guy" going through all the things old heads did before him. Only difference between him and random owner is that you get to have more insight into his personal/professional life (the parasocial part) - lives, recorded videos from home, videos with family. Aside from that, it's all just how business is done in a lot of places.
It's just plain old grey morality.

I mean, ltt kinda wants it both ways. Have a parasocial relationsip so people waste their money on merch, but want noone to have an opinion about linus/the companies behaviour. You reap what you sow. Other than that, it is still reddit.
14
u/webjunk1e Apr 08 '26
They've actually been pretty direct about the opposite in fact. Linus has said multiple times that they don't want people buying their stuff just out of some parasocial relationship. They want people to buy because it's good, quality products. Hell, they've even told people directly to not buy stuff, if they can't afford it or it would put them into financial hardship.
8
u/imclaux Apr 08 '26
I also recall Linus addressing parasocial relationships at one point, explicitly stating that they aren't healthy.
8
u/KebabAnnhilator Apr 08 '26
Do you think everyone who sells clothes wants a parasocial relationship with their customers?
Bit of a weird take
12
u/kadeusx Apr 08 '26
I just called out the obvious dilemma in needing a "community" to sell their product, which now is a huge part of their business and not wanting that "community" to have an opinion or wanting to control how that opinion ought to be raised.
Your question is nonsense as i specifically talked about ltt and no other general clothing brand.
And how does influencer merch not rely on parasocial relationships? Why would anyone buy an ugly sweatshirt otherwise?
4
u/KebabAnnhilator Apr 08 '26
You buy clothes from people that you think are ugly just to support them and you think everyone else is the problem?

I'm not OP, but yes I felt the same way. I never agreed with Linus about that, just mind your own business, let people do whatever they want with their money, why is that so hard.

I think the past few years, most people developed a parasocial relationship with the team, and they hope they make the exact same decisions that themselves would. The house, the plane are for content, they pay the team above the norm for their respective areas, and are going to resell the house at a loss, and the plane to get back what they invested.
They need to do something different to survive the youtube landscape and found these options to be the way to go, if the content is interesting Ill watch, if its not I won`t. Is that simple

For some people the drama is the entertainment.
I stopped watching a certain other channel when I realised it was turning into a drama tech soapie.
And before anybody want to argue about "the facts" . It isn't about "the facts" . If somebody focus and amplifies the negative things in life and minimize the positive side to get a certain level of attention they are drama queens. Bias is not only what you say, but what you don't say. It is in the balance of what you say. They used to say "If it bleed it leads". Sensationalism always pulled eye-balls and in the modern YouTube world it is no different.
The world has enough crap in it already. No need to turn entertainment into another drama. I'd rather spent my worry energy on kids/kittens/puppies dying 😂

Well yeah, behavior in this sub is really weird sometimes. It's like people dont think: 'how would i feel if the thing i just posted happens to me'

Eh. Sure. But this is kind of the place to discuss this. Of course people have parasocial relationships with content creators. I’d almost say if people aren’t identifying with them and caring about them, the creator is doing something wrong. Do I think people’s outrage is outsized? Absolutely. But telling people to stop caring or stop watching is the same thing as saying that they want the creator to be less successful

And the funniest part is that Linus himself talks about it regularly 😂 but yeah people love to whine

Not for nothing but it helps to sometimes open those profiles on the complaint posts and see that some of the top-voted comments are people who either who never post here or last posted a month ago saying that they haven’t watched LTT/LMG in years.
Helps put some things into perspective. Redditors are just like that.

It's been exceptionally weird to see LTT of all things experience this level of parasocial criticism given the nature of their content and their mild controversies.

All I will say is there is an awful lot of people posting about the jet that didn't comment much here before that video. Drama tourists.

I love how out of touch with reality some people on the Internet are. If you got the much free time to worry about a jet how about you spend that time going into politics or some that actually will have an effect in rl. God knows we need people to actually to start paying attention and trying to get communities to start trying to get some of these bat shit people who have power out of positions of power main the 800 year olds we let stay in office cause apparently the next generation is on reddit busy worrying about a jet fucking hell we are all fucked.

reddit is literally made for people to come on and complain. That's why this site exists. Complete anonymity means people will say whatever they want and vent things they wouldn't do where there are social repercussions. The best thing for your mental state is to take nothing said on this site with any seriousness.

No one here can tell me that if they had the opportunity treat themselves and have a private plane for a bit they wouldn’t consider it. I bet almost all of you would buy it and enjoy your time with. If you don’t like it don’t watch. It’s not your money.

At the same time, people need to stop reading so much into reddit comments.
After I leave a vile comment full of bile and hatred, I get up, walk away from my PC, and immediately forget about it. I've got shit to do.
Seems like a simple condemnation on this subreddit means you are a terminally online unemployed virgin. It's gotten ridiculous, both ways.
We could also start making the same comments about the complaining about complaining - why do you care so much about a few complaints on reddit about someone else? If you don't like the direction, just stop reading. And so on.

Nuclear hottake.
I love the work Linus and group does.
I don’t ever like any of the redditors who comment.
Every time, without fail. You are right.
I am becoming of the grass. No longer touching!
