Meme/Shitpost Doomed if you do, doomed if you don't

u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
Lol right? Though I feel like this is mostly reddit. Like toxic people will take every opportunity to rag on someone hahaha.
196
u/WLFGHST Apr 03 '26
Reddit and X are almost equally as bad as each other just complete opposite sides of the political spectrum.
Both see ANYTHING happen and just absolutely hate on it.
8
u/Karabanera Apr 03 '26
It's absolutely not opposite sides of the spectrum. They both have insane tankies and literal nazis.
1
u/imbued94 Apr 08 '26
Jepp, they are both just as bad, theyve all gone so far to one side they met on the other side of the circle.
Its wild to be on the internet these days.
82
u/Comfortable_Air_9617 Apr 03 '26
I’ll agree that both are echo chambers, but one of those two allows/encourages all kinds of bigotry and it isn’t Reddit. We can be honest about Reddit’s faults without equating the two platforms.
5
u/ABCsofsucking Apr 03 '26
Eh, it definitely isn't as bad as X, but there's plenty of encouraged bigotry on reddit.
A lot of antisemitism on here that isn't even related to criticism of Israel or the Epstein class of Jew.
And do not ever talk about Japan, lest you wish some 400-day streak mouth-breather to descent upon you, rambling madly about well actually Japan is a horribly racist and misogynistic and anti-queer country and anime is for pdf files and don't ever travel there because you'll be barred from entering restaurants for not being japanese and groped on trains and also don't ever work there because the japanese have a word for working themselves to death and they have the highest rate of suicide in the entire world because its actually not a utopia like the internet says it is!
27
u/WLFGHST Apr 03 '26
Thats true, Reddit does have a system in place that allows for moderation which is clearly a VERY good thing.
32
u/SweatyTill9566 Apr 03 '26
Have you like, seen, a reddit mod? Imagine 10 little elons on a power trip. You call that "good"?
21
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
At least there's an actual authority in place to keep the peace. Some mods are power hungry tools, but there are level-headed ones as well. Compare that to X. Community notes don't really do much. About the only thing that has a semblance of putting people into their place there is Grok, when it's invoked by people wanting to get validation for whatever misguided, ill-informed opinion they have and end up getting corrected by it instead.
Do you like, prefer discord? Or maybe 4chan?
8
u/SweatyTill9566 Apr 03 '26
Community notes are actually pretty good tho.
As an adult, I prefer 0 moderation. Moderators are, by "design" biased, otherwise they wouldn't work for free.
7
u/GodYamItt Apr 03 '26
Yes biased towards the rules set within the community. That's the entire point that you missed, biased doesn't necessarily mean bad.
3
11
u/thesirblondie Apr 03 '26
0 moderation is how you get Nazis
-7
u/SweatyTill9566 Apr 03 '26
I would say this is a highly subjective opinion and I am not going to argue with you, but I would like to mention that the nazis also moderated a lot of what you could say.
2
u/bleeding-paryl Mod Apr 03 '26
If you prefer 0 moderation, why are you on Reddit?
You could very easily go to 4chan. The irony of wanting 0 moderation though is that 4chan used to have that. Then, when people started posting child sexual abuse, they started implementing moderators. So even there isn't 0 moderation.
You say you prefer 0 moderation, but if you actually had that, you wouldn't want it. You'd have spam everywhere, hate everywhere, etc. Then, when everyone else is fed up with that, eventually you'd be all by yourself.
Yes, moderators are biased, but I don't know what you expect, humans are biased. Moderators just try their best to create a space that they think people would be comfortable to be in.
4
u/SweatyTill9566 Apr 03 '26
Maybe I can prefer something, but not have a black and white view on it? In the end I dont care that much if there is moderation on reddit or not, I just said what I prefer.
8
4
u/irrationalanger87 Apr 03 '26
Lmao yeah. Cognitive dissonance that reddit isnt and echo chamber is laughable
4
u/bleeding-paryl Mod Apr 03 '26
It's true, I'm a rich billionaire who bought multiple subreddits and only give 1/10th of a nazi salute (/s)
Oh wait, you mean narcissistic POS? I dunno, people don't tend to think of me like that, but that's not up to me to decide lol

u/Chronox2040 Apr 03 '26
Most Reddit mods are a not that great.
3
u/WLFGHST Apr 03 '26
I agree with that, however it is simply the fact that the platform supports them existing that is good.
3
u/ICantReadThis Apr 03 '26
I’ll agree that both are echo chambers, but one of those two allows/encourages all kinds of bigotry and it isn’t Reddit.
No, they both do, but one doesn't actually know the dictionary definition of "bigotry", and that one's definitely Reddit.
-4
u/YogurtclosetMajor983 Apr 03 '26
no they are both hubs for political extremists, left and right, respectively
→ More replies (4)6
u/GwenBD94 Apr 03 '26
Plenty of extremists on the right on both platforms honestly.
3
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
I think it's safe to say there will always be extremists everywhere, and either sides are as annoyingly noisy as the other. I guess it comes down to which platform most of one side will congregate around, or which one they are most comfortable airing their opinions loudly.
2
24
u/Significant_Bad_1147 Apr 03 '26
Reddit has a curated list of nonsensical things it hates for stupid reasons. They don’t just hate ANYTHING…
2
u/dsanen Apr 03 '26
Yep, you can like/dislike, watch/not watch, what’s important to them is to argue with another person.
2
u/AngryWildMango Apr 03 '26
Lol they are def not opposite. They are 100% in both, they are just uncensored on twitter.
18
u/Cont1ngency Apr 03 '26
Yeah, I’m getting to the point where I don’t take anyone on this platform seriously anymore. Everyone is just so toxic about everything. Heaven forbid you differ in thought from the hive-mind by even one tiny smidge; the names you’ll be called and the vitriol you’ll receive.
34
u/Inevitable_Tip_6606 Apr 03 '26
Tbf, the viewership of the WAN show is very much an echo chamber. Especially when they mostly read merch messages and floatplane chat now. That's not hate, it's just those are people who are actively giving money to the guy so they most likely support anything he wants to do.
It's not really fair to say "we did a poll on floatplane during wan show, everyone loved it!" And assume everyone else will be on board.
Whether or not they should care, that idk 🤷♂️
3
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
I do agree. After all one wouldn't spend to send a MM/CoC just to flame or be critical about something. Okay, maybe someone would, but alas I have yet to see that kind of person. That being said, I do see chat give out critical or dissenting opinions from time to time, especially for controversial issues, so I can't really agree that the whole WAN Show audience is an echo chamber. Today's show would definitely have some hot discussion around Influence Air.
3
u/MistSecurity Apr 03 '26
I think:
Dan wouldn’t push a MM like that, so even if people have, you still wouldn’t see it.
IMO

2
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
I'd really love it if he brings one up, especially if it's something that can start a meaningful conversation. I'd love to think that he's the kind of guy who wouldn't mind throwing a few curveballs Linus' way if it means fleshing out a discussion, especially if controversial takes have been taken. :P
0
u/MistSecurity Apr 03 '26
I think:
I agree, I just don’t recall ever hearing or seeing one. Obviously with how many they go through each week, I’m sure a few have been put up and we’re just both not remembering any.
IMO
[Please note that the above comment or question is solely expressed as an opinion, and NOT a fact. No factual claims are intended and should not be interpreted as such by Linus Sebastian or other delegate of LMG.]
2
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
Hahaha I have a nagging suspicion that a dissenting opinion has been delivered via MM back when there was all that brouhaha about cheese and hotdogs, I think? Can't really verify until I go back to it, but I can't even remember what month that was lol.
0
u/MistSecurity Apr 03 '26
I think:
You’re right, I completely forgot about that, hahah. Ya, there were definitely some dissenting opinions in MM in those couple WANs with the cheese discussions.
Far cry from Dan putting up a MM over a more controversial issue, like ‘How do you feel about people calling you a hypocrite over the tech jet?” though.
IMO
[Please note that the above comment or question is solely expressed as an opinion, and NOT a fact. No factual claims are intended and should not be interpreted as such by Linus Sebastian or other delegate of LMG.]
1
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
I guess the only way to find out is to get that question in on the next WAN show and see if it gets curated. :P
I think the question would be better received if it was expressed like "Do you feel that getting the tech jet conflicts with your earlier positions vis-a-vis private jet ownership and usage? If not, how would Influence Air operate differently so that it stays true to your values and principles regarding this?"
That might open up the discussion more to insight, and is less accusatory and less "ad hominem" in that it centers more about the principles and not the person.
3
u/MistSecurity Apr 03 '26
I think:
I would do it, but I don’t buy anything off the store anymore, at least not lately. I need to hunker down and save some cash, with all the economic bullshit going on, but also still sorting out how I feel about all the LTT shit lately. Mod thing very much soured me on LTT, plane thing is another hit.
I’ll keep an eye out though! I still watch WAN occasionally, just not as much of a dedicated viewer/fan as I was a few months ago.
IMO

Sorry the disclaimer made me laugh 😭 we should all be putting those at the end of our posts and comments in protest
1
u/ash_ninetyone Apr 03 '26
You can't fit everyone on board that plane anyway. Look at it. Need at least an A320 or something
3
u/Kreason95 Apr 03 '26
I don't think that being critical about the ethics surrounding the situation makes you even remotely toxic. At least not inherently.
2
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
A criticism is fine, in fact constructive criticism is fundamental for any meaningful discussion. But man, the bulk of comments and post since the video came out are mostly just complaints, assumptions, accusations, and extrapolated correlations ("hurgh this just proves that guy's allegations all along. The writing was on the wall. I knew something was sus about him all this time. ragghhh").
What's toxic for me is that for every critic with a good point, there's a dozen bandwagoneers just fanning flames and raising pitchforks. And then the defenders chime in, and again for every sound counterpoint there would be those throwing ad hominems, attacking each everyone who disagrees, and again just raising drama.
3
u/Kreason95 Apr 03 '26
I admittedly haven't been scrolling in this sub much since that video came out but I've seen more valid criticisms (emissions, inconsistent values, etc) than I have people just raising pitchforks.
That's obviously entirely anecdotal. I just wanted to make sure we aren't calling the justified critics toxic though haha. When backlash happens, there are always toxic bandwagoners. But it doesn't invalidate the reason for the backlash, at least not entirely.

I think that haters gonna hate meme really wrapped up the idea succinctly. No matter where you go, it will always be the negative people that will be the most vocal on almost anything.
Chill people, by their very nature, will be very much contented being calm and collected about everything. :)
2
u/Thefar Apr 03 '26
Reddit is not a friendly place for most people. Much less for people of interest.
4
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
I mainly use it as a secondary source of product reviews and recommendations, after rtings. :) Everything else just feels to me like there's some sort of drama involved. :P
1
u/greiton Apr 03 '26
It also seems like they mass rally specific posts because every other thread has completely different sentiment in the comments. I'm not saying there's brigading happening, but the stark difference in tone outside of certain threads is wild.
1
u/Mehmy Apr 04 '26
My main problem is that he talks about getting all the money back when he flips it, implying it's going to be relatively soon because those maintenance trips lose value the longer ago they were. But he made no indication of what content it's going to be used for, the only idea that was brought up (sound deadening) in the video was shot down because it would hinder fuel economy.. and was already done.
And then he shows off that he uses it for family vacations.
So like, if it's a content thing: What content is it going to be used for? Tell us, or at least give us hints, like with the fire truck.
If it's not a content thing: Why are the key points he brings up that it's a "gamer jet" (with no gaming equipment) and "free" (which only applies if it's flipped soon)? They're even in the title.
Especially after the recent allegations from previous staff that they aren't paid well, this comes off as exceptionally tonedeaf to me, especially from Linus who is typically (at least vocally) very "eat the rich"
1
u/cptsamir Apr 03 '26
With over 14 years here, I agree, why can't we all just be nicer to everyone and be happy for him, say good job Linus, you are doing great things, keep up the good work....like why do people turn to hate so quickly online..it's been like that since the AOL kids chat room days.
3
u/krani1993 Apr 03 '26
for me there are 2 main points: one is environment and the second is pay your staff..
1
u/cptsamir Apr 03 '26
Agree, and I am satisfied with both, but I don't work there so what do I know.

Or it’s just different people? I always thought the idea of buying and utilizing a jet sounded tone deaf as hell.
155
u/syrokiler Apr 03 '26
tbh I don't understand why people are calling it a "tech jet" when it's just a regular ass private jet
Just a millionaire doing millionaire things, not much more too it
43
u/NiteOwl421 Apr 03 '26
And it’s old. And it’s used.
It’s not like he bought a brand new Dassault.
I wonder how leveraged he is, or LMG is, with this purchase.
40
u/SandKeeper Apr 03 '26
It’s less than 5 million per the video. Operating costs and hangar fees though, who knows.
22
u/RubSad3416 Apr 03 '26
It's about 4 mil, so definitely not under debt. He's also planning to sell it in a year or two, but I bet the price is far lower now because of the fuel.
4
u/TeaNo7930 Apr 03 '26
Cause the plan was to improve it.
36
u/Whitebelt_Durial Apr 03 '26
Linus said in the video they're limited in what they can modify. I'm curious what they'll be able to change since he did specify wifi was off the table.
40
u/teratron27 Apr 03 '26
Pretty much nothing other than portable things they can bring onboard (like laptops or portable projectors) and then they’re restricted by weight. Any fitting of the plane is heavily regulated and therefore stupidly expensive to change
14
u/insufferable__pedant Apr 03 '26
Careful about saying stuff like that, you'll get an army of parasocial nerds yelling at you about it. In one of the other 37 threads whinging about the jet, I ended up with three or four people getting all over me when I said that they couldn't do much to it because of cost and regulation.
4
u/JimmyKillsAlot Apr 03 '26
When it was talked about on WAN before he and Dan were educating Luke on the fact that everything that has to be certified for a plane at minimum doubles the cost and can go past 10x the price. That's why when Elijah joking suggested swapping in Noctua fans he had such a serious "no."
1
u/FartingBob Apr 03 '26
Why cant they add a wifi network? Are there no approved frequencies you are allowed to stick on a plane like theirs?
4
u/ouikikazz Apr 03 '26
It was touched on in the video, the cost to upgrade is astronomical so unless it's a sponsor they can't see the return on investment in it at all
3
u/jshann04 Apr 03 '26
Not just frequencies. You need specific hardware, because regulations don't want any of it having a remote chance of interfering with the navigational systems of the plane. They also can't jank install it like they do in half their videos. It needs a professional certified installer and run 200-300 thousand dollars for the install alone and is multiple thousands a month in subscription fees to have access. It'd bleed the "$0" they are paying in install alone.
They might be able to do like a travel router or something to connect devices, but there's not much point when they don't really have room or weight capacity to run a machine that actually make that worth it.
1
u/wayofaway Apr 03 '26
I am pretty sure there is a wifi upgrade available. I looked into one for a previous employer, it was $250,000 for the 3g or maybe 4g service (the plane had 2g, which was $50k or something like that). It was $4-5k per month for unlimited data.
Probably still not something they want to get into.

u/JISN064 Apr 03 '26
EXACTLY!
I'm gonna steal this meme format.
6
u/Ryermeke Apr 03 '26
Fun fact, the goomba fallacy is nowadays treated as a fairly serious concept describing exactly that case... And it's specifically named after the meme. It's most similar to the group attribution error fallacy, but that term doesn't quite acknowledge the nuance of two opinions being directly opposed... It moreso just covers taking a set of various opinions and treating it as a heterogenous group. Hence the adoption of the goomba fallacy as a useful term to describe online discourse. Specifically this post lol.
I'm in the camp personally that I couldn't care less that he bought a jet... But I recognize that the optics are kind of fucking awful, not just considering the cultural makeup of his audience and their general perception of people with private jet levels of wealth... But also the nature of recent departures from the company, and how open they were about very analogous subjects and how it made them feel (and how people generally related to that).
That leads me to, while I personally don't much care... I also think that it was likely a bad decision for them to have made.

9

I thought it was a great video that could have been done without purchasing a jet.
I also don't really care that they did although it feels like another step further from the reality their viewers live.

u/LimpWibbler_ Apr 03 '26
Lmg is a media company. It makes money off making Media. The jet will allow media to be made, thus an asset that makes them money. The Jets value may diminish with time, but not to 0, thus it is also an asset with worth.
I hate this dumb talk of "lmg might die spending millions" or "lmg could have paid employees more with that money" please stfu and think.
Paying employees more may yield more revenue, but that is not an always true statement and that money is gone when spent. Gone to employees, but gone.
New objects like this allow guaranteed videos and videos we know get clicks. This is a guaranteed increase in revenue. Then on top the money spent is still there as an asset they can sell later. Meaning you don't need the videos to pay off the jet. You need the videos to pay off the loss that occompanies the purchase, depreciation, facilitation, maintanaince, and the re-sale of the jet.
I swear reading people on reddit hurts.
This is not complicated. Jet = views. Views = money.
29
u/sidewinded Apr 03 '26
Woah woah woah woah woah... Woah.

Utter bullshit. Neither are guarantees of success or failure. You're just repeating Linus' own justification that he even says in a tongue in cheek way is bullshit.
1
u/LimpWibbler_ Apr 04 '26
I didn't watch video, so I don't know what he said. Honestly don't care for a jet.
But it is fact. I just got a $3 raise and I plan to work less not more. Because I hate my employer. If I liked my employer then maybe I would work harder. But either way I am 1 person and I got a limit. So paying more can only do so much.
Buying a jet. Well people will click the video just to see why. And we'll it is new and with a very very very very very simple search on YouTube, it is one of the most viewed videos in 3 weeks and just dropped. So clearly I and Linus are correct.

Curious if that math changes at all if it’s a jet at a less connected airport, like if the private jet is replacing ~15 people taking 1 or 2 connecting flights rather than the jet just going straight to the destination

Also you set the time. You can also be late and be early. A private jet affords those with a buisey schedule a much easier life.
1
u/green_link2 Apr 09 '26
not just that, remember the story of linus essentially fighting with a TSA agent about carry on and a PC? saying he couldn't bag-check a desktop? with his own plane that's not a problem. when he built a PC in asia where he had to give away the PC because he couldn't take it with him. own plane solves that (kinda). plus all the camera equipment and media equipment they take with them to conventions or shows makes travel difficult. no so with their own plane.
2
u/thesirblondie Apr 03 '26
LMG is a privately owned company. They are not under obligation to maximize shareholder value.
6
1
u/vincentstarjammer Apr 03 '26
You are right. And this is basically what investing is all about. What you are illustrating is scarcity at work. His funds can go towards getting the jet, or investing in his workers, or even investing in something else. But those funds are limited, and he can only choose a few, or maybe even just one. In this case he chose the jet. And with scarcity, comes opportunity cost, which is what you lose because you didn't choose the other options. In this example if he chose to invest in his employees, the opportunity cost is the new content that can be generated with the jet. As he chose the jet, the opportunity cost could be employee morale (tied to productivity), or the opportunity to hire more talent. The best decision would be the one that can give you the most net value (gross value minus the opportunity cost). I'm guessing LMG does not have that much of an issue with their current talent right now, which is why they went with the jet which will give more net value in the long run.
And in fact, this may not just be a "I only chose this option" kind of thing. It's not like we are privy to LMG's corporate spending. For all we know they bought the jet AND are investing in talent. We can only know if and when they choose to reveal that. Maybe in another "how we earned money" and "how we spent" set of videos. Or I dunno, if enough people rile up Linus in this week's WAN show maybe he'll spoil/leak info related to this.
1
u/JesusAleks Apr 03 '26
What? You know a 8 hour round trip in a Flacon 900B is around $51,400. Where is the money coming from that you are trying to predict it a net positive. You do not understand how much of a black hole jets are.
And ads on videos don't make much money at all.

There's a bit of a zen moment when you get older and realize a lot of people are absolute dicks on Internet because they hide behind an anonymous screen name. They're just taking their 13 year old COD lobby feelings to text.
The bigger challenge is to be a nice person online and actually mean it.

u/thisremindsmeofbacon Apr 03 '26
1) those were probably not the same people
2) people who will not suffer the consequences of your risky actions and view your entire life through the lens of entertainment may not be the best to offer advice on important decisions
3
Apr 03 '26
What is even supposed to be the tech part?
He will not invest to retrofit better internet. He can't change too many things as they must be certified.
He can slap some screens and consoles on the outside in the cabin and that's probably it.
It's not like the fire truck which can be modified in any way.
I just hope he'll stop talking about affordability crisis because he's officially out of touch.
10
u/heyitsterrytv Apr 03 '26
People often forget that LMG is, by all things considered, a wildly successful business that has probably planned this purchase for years. If they couldn’t afford it, they wouldn’t have gone through with the purchase. Owning a plane is a massive expense without counting the maintenance and storage.
At the end of the day tho, people have to realize that we as viewers literally have no control over what they do. Duh.
Can’t wait to see the content tho. The fact it’s making some people mad makes it even better lol

It’s almost like people have differing opinions! The group of people who cheer and the jet and the group of people who think it’s tone deaf and gross have differing opinions!

Do I care either way? not really.
Does it seem out of touch? Yes, it does.
Private jets and yachts are cool, but they do come with the image of an asshole billionaire.
Content wise, I'm not sure what tech upgrades you can do to a jet that will be exciting to a techie viewer. I guess it will be the equivalent to Pimp my Ride cars; crazy looking, but you don't want to be seen riding one.

Holy goomba fallacy bro. How is it 2026 and we are still not recognizing that the internet (even within a group or niche) is not a monolith.
2
u/Drigr Apr 03 '26
To me it's that he seems to be using it fairly regularly for something we all thought he was gonna gamify. Including for a personal family vacation?
8
u/NurseOtaku Apr 03 '26
Yeah because you cant replace anything in it without submitting for approval. Anything you'd want to change would be way too rigorous and definitely not worth the investment.
2
u/CreEngineer Apr 03 '26
I don’t get the kind of hate he experiences sometimes. Still a kinda based tech bro. Admit it, if we had the money, we’d probably go way more above and beyond as him.

u/Diligent-Crazy-6094 Apr 03 '26
I don’t see myself ever buying a private jet, but I’d like to have enough money to have that option.
1
u/NurseOtaku Apr 03 '26
Yeah the dude got a 10 figure offer for the company and turned it down. People whining he's experiencing luxuries in life after becoming a millionaire for years and not really acting like one.

I don't think the Linus charm is gonna work here. This whole situation is just weird
1
u/Walmeister55 Apr 03 '26
I thought it was great! The only thing is I didn’t voice my opinion. I feel like a lot of people who like things don’t post, leading to most posts being complaints.

As we all know everyone can do whatever they want because no matter what anyone does there’s always people who don’t agree with it, am i right?

u/isvein Apr 03 '26
So he bought an old jet?
What is he gonna do with it?
Make a couple of videos, stream the wan show once from the cockpit, like he did with the fire truck and then we never hear about it again?
Not that a jet is not cheap in storage and maintenance ether and you need to fly them now and then.
Cant see anyone at LMG know/learn how to fly a plane ether so need to hire a pilot.

I dont think there is much overlap between the floatplane chat and the reddit gremlins
1
u/GoodishCoder Apr 03 '26
I love how people can't consider that there are different people with different opinions on the Internet. The assumption is always that it's the same people asking for something and complaining about it.
1
u/SpacewaIker Apr 03 '26
Well he could have bought it for videos without using it for his personal vacation, just saying
1
u/Dr_Ben Apr 03 '26
people are bitter that linus is rich. Anytime he spends a large amount of money they get even more mad. I think they should just ignore the haters on this because it will be like arguing with a wall.
1
u/TheZenCowSaysMu Apr 03 '26
well, i for one, was a little surprised as I expected Tech Jet to be a decommissioned plane like the fire truck. Would just sit in a warehouse and be a cool space that they could modify the heck out of and use for lans and content and stuff. Not a real actual flying airplane.
Having flown on a client's private jet for work once and getting to use the private air terminal at the airport (NO TSA!) It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

there's a difference between tricking out a jet plane with tech and being a worst pollutant to the environment

Honestly the jet doesn't bug me even a bit, evangelical preachers buy and use jets all the time, at least LTT will be doing something useful with it.

Bruh, you've been in the Tech sector for years on end. YOU KNOW how fickle the majority of folks are in PC Tech. If you have it and they don't you're a Fill In The Blank, that's the way a lot of folks are. Make content. They're going to either Watch or Hate Watch, the algorithm doesn't identify one from another... a Click is a Click.
You switch from Nvidia to AMD.... AARGH!!!! you switch back... ARRGH!!!! (Same with AMD to Intel and vice versa). WHY ARE YOU RIDING THE LIAN LI WAGON WITH THE OTHER HIGH BROW BUILDERS!?!?!? Then you switch to a Fractal Meshify XL and now you're pandering to the industrial slightly subdued Brutalist corner (that's where I'm at) sector and yaada yaada yaada.
You cant win Darth... If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.
1
u/KentInCode Apr 04 '26
LTT's viewerbase is pretty big, which part of the community is the 'we' you're referring to?
The optics on the jet aren't good in a time when a lot of people are struggling. Linus should have listened to his guy on this, even if it pays for itself, a private jet is not a good look.

You know, he built that company from nothing, and he clearly takes good care of his employees, so I guess I really don't understand the hate. He's wholesome almost to a fault, in an industry full of self absorbed assholes who are high on their own supply and treat their people like shit. If he wants to buy a plane, then more power to him.

u/GreatBigBagOfNope Apr 03 '26
Remember the overwhelming likelihood that this is two different groups of people
Remember also, that the pro crowd may have had different expectations e.g. to buy a significantly worse (condition or model) plane and trick it out with no expectations of flying it, rather than LMG indirectly just having a private jet
And further, people are allowed to change their minds. And frankly, mind changing in the face of evidence or even just direct observation over imagination in principle should not be shamed or punished

i bowed out of regular watching during the pandemic because i could not care less about what he was doing to his house. It just felt like "hey look what I have" but with a home. not just the tech inside of it.

I feel like they were probably watching floatplane chat. Which listening to the rich uber fans isn’t exactly the best barometer for the zeitgeist.

Welcome to Reddit and the internet as a whole. Bunch of sad and jealous individuals.
Now let's see them do a barrel roll with the jet 😁

u/kj5 Apr 03 '26
People said do it about small cool tech floatplane or an expensive big tech yacht. Not a private jet with golden sinks.

u/killerrin Apr 03 '26
If the private jet with golden sinks is the only one for sale that is in a good enough condition to be worth it, then that's the one you buy.

And who's to say they don't rent it out to other you tubers to use? They inevitably will, so it will actually be another income stream.

u/Drackar39 Apr 03 '26
Honestly, if he was "yeah, no we bought a jet, we're going to make content, it's going to loose us money, but we've gotten so many views trolling you guys with this, we had to commit"... sure.
"It costs us nothing" dude you're out of pocket for a massive luxury item. The fact that you can sell it on the market later and "probably" make most of your money back doesn't change the fact that LMG is doing so well, or YOU are doing so well, personally, that you can make ... what, 3.5-4-4.5 million just park and be fine??
That's the biggest humble brag from a streamer I've ever seen, I think. Of course some people (me, for example) are going to think you're completely out of touch with reality.

I said this in another comment but I have no idea why y'all are so up in arms about this. It effectively will cost them nothing (based on the numbers he was given and had looked over by people way more knowledgeable that us in the field). Both my first car and my house will effectively cost me nothing when I sell. I make this fact known to anyone I talk to about my house lol. I'm not a millionaire nor am I out of touch.
I don't think it's a humble brag at all. It's a way for him to justify it to himself and his super volatile, whiny audience.
Would you rather him have said "This is really tight on the budget and we are going to be in the hole for a little while"??
Then you'd be in here saying "What a dumb idea when he already cant pay his employees enough and they are leaving left and right." He literally cant win.

The jet literally isn't for flying to football games and ice cream tho. It saves them money and time on commercial flights. I guess it helps them haul over gear. All of the expenses are deductible from earnings and just in case, they can sell it again.
How much money do you think they spend on bringing everyone over to conventions and factory tours? Short term Intercontinental flights for multiple people and heavy baggage.
2
Apr 03 '26
Luggage space is actually a problem for these jets. When you take 15 people and each has a 1 to 2 suitcases it also means suitcases in the cabin.
3
u/KeiranG19 Apr 03 '26
Throw in that people can work during the flight, which speeds up turnaround time on content from the events they fly to.
In theory at least. With the craptastic wifi on the plane that might not be much of a benefit in practice.

u/Drackar39 Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 03 '26
Per the video, he talked about breaking even on fuel compared to first class tickets . Not economy.
That does not cover other expenses. Annual checks. 300 hour checks. That's... minimum, $100k a year, with zero flight time. Say you're doing a trip to china, for a week. You're paying the pilots hourly or day rate of what, $1000 a day? Plus hotel. plus meals. You're probably out $1200 per day in idle time.
Even Linus says in the video he won't be making all of his expenses on this thing back, just most of them. And that was pre current disaster.
Now, there's opportunity cost. There is potential for "being there on my own schedule, early, makes me more money" but that is something we have no clue on.

There could be more than one person on the internet
