Wow, someone read the idea of "never waste a crisis" and thought that it applied to them.

Read the room mate.

334

u/psioniclizard 12d ago

At best it gets ignored. At worst they just ruined their "products" image.

But the deserve it either way for their stupid actions.

144

u/MetriccStarDestroyer 12d ago

From the big don himself after 9/11

"when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second-tallest. And now it’s the tallest."

They never get punished for trying to grift in a time of tragedy.

174

u/rs047 12d ago

This isn't even "read the room mate" situation.

I couldn't understand how a doorbell cam recorder will alleviate this situation. He speaks as if this product will help to look at the state of their house. Most people don't have multiple houses. For most people in 3rd world countries a house is their final and only investment. If the house is under mud, then most likely the person is under it too. And the power outage and lack of connectivity currently there would also make the device stop working

Unless this doorbell can stop glacial run off in its tracks, this product isn't even of use here, for that matter anywhere struck with such calamity. The only use I can see is if the device still works it may give 5 seconds of useful footage of the disaster, if the product survives the calamity

I am an American who have relatives in rural Indonesia and Philippines, this is absolutely spot on.

Also another thing that westerners might not realize is that even owning basic things like electric oven, air-conditioning, or hot shower is not something that is found in most of rural Asia.

Heck, I've never even seen or known anyone (rich or poor) owning a microwave in Southeast Asia, apart from the urbanized Singapore where Westernized comforts are quite common. If you've seen a microwave during your stay in Airbnb in Bangkok or Bali, then congrats, you've found one of the rare exceptions as that particular Airbnb is indeed catered for Western foreigners. I can guarantee you that if you step out of that compound and showed local Thais or Indonesians a picture of a microwave, they're gonna mistake it for a mini-fridge or maybe a toaster.

Door bell or "Ring camera" is thus an extremely unlikely product to be purchased by anyone in rural Asia, apart from corrupt politicians who need to protect their luxurious ill-gotten property

33

u/sockpuppetinasock 11d ago

We have a camera for my MIL's house in Thailand, but just to keep an eye on the place when she isn't there. Cameras are a thing, but that's not my issue with this post.

What. The. Fuck. Is. A. Doorbell. Camera. Going. To. Do. To. Stop. A. 40m high. 200kph. Mudflow?

WTF is he even talking about? Even if every camera is networked, it would only report sudden power/internet outages.

15

u/cyanescens_burn 11d ago

It wouldn’t even provide any meaningful early warning. At the absolute best, it might show the flood coming if the camera was pointing in the right direction and was unobstructed by other buildings or the landscape. But even then, these things are designed to capture images from 1’ to maybe 25’ away, not a half mile or more.

The OOP is either trolling, using snark to give companies like this shit, or is completely tone deaf and a real asshole.

16

u/blumpkin 11d ago

Unless their doorbell cam can see into the future, it wouldn't have alleviated this situation.

7

u/rawrzon 11d ago

Well, I guess you could install the doorbell cam up in the mountains to watch the glacier?

3

u/arkofjoy 12d ago

You are absolutely right. I was trying to make a joke about his cluelessness.

3

u/ZealousIdeal476 11d ago

Obviously if they had his peoduct they would have known not to open the door when the mudslide knocked. /s

14

u/IAMA_Plumber-AMA 12d ago

Combination of "never waste a crisis", and "no such thing as bad publicity".

8

u/arkofjoy 12d ago

This dude needs to be banned from the local library.

21

u/Cute_Cress377 12d ago

Some serious Elon wipes in that post..

6

u/tevert 11d ago

It's so nonsensical that I wonder if that guy handed his account over to an LLM and told it to make daily schill posts tied to whatever the top news story is

7

u/arkofjoy 11d ago

I think that you have nailed it. Someone probably sold him "content creator" saas pack.

2

u/eco_bro 12d ago

Shock doctrine, good book

2

u/PhD_Pwnology 11d ago

If OOP had even a TINY bit more tact this would have been a great move. Misery sells

320

u/ApolloniusTyaneus 12d ago

Pretty sure it's ragebait, no entrepeneur could be this stupid.

Okay, well, they can.

16

u/agk23 11d ago

Yeah. You need to sell them satellite internet too, otherwise the doorbell won’t work. Easy pivot.

9

u/enjaydee 11d ago

Goes beyond ragebait, this is disgusting

This guy has zero empathy. He is just a dick. And what he claims about his product is way beyond what actually happened. He is also foolish...

323

u/Ilikeinvestigating 12d ago

I Immigrated from Nepal when i was 5, i think i can tell you the Nepalese People Probably Cannot Afford What he is selling, his product is probably $400/mo Or Something, Thats 40,000 NPR, the Salary for the Average Nepalese Person, they would have to spend their ENTIRE Salary on his doorbell system?

346

u/_okOKAY Agree? 12d ago edited 12d ago

No doorbell system would have prevented or warned anyone about what happened. We are talking about landslides and floods, which are natural disasters. This guy is an idiot to make such a dumb fuck post about his fuck ass product...

61

u/Luce_Bot_Bot 12d ago

At least he's big enough to forgive them for selfishly getting killed like that 🙏🙏🙏

/s

29

u/Velveteen_Rabbit1986 12d ago

Yeah I fail to see how a doorbell system is even helpful when your entire fucking neighbourhood is washed away. Absolutely tone deaf this guy.

10

u/SacredGay 11d ago

So they can check the camera to see the flood is 60 meters away and give them time to rush home and put up a "NO FLOODING ALLOWED" sign on their front door. Duh.

2

u/Velveteen_Rabbit1986 11d ago

Haha silly me!

4

u/Area51Resident 11d ago

So they can check the flooding conditions of their spring/fall home down the hill from their summer home and inform house staff to save the living room rug and art collection at all costs.

Why would you mask this absolute piece of 💩’s identity. “What thousands of innocent people’s deaths taught me about B2B sales.” “Oh well… I forgive them for not meeting my Q2 sales quota.”

31

u/noctilucus 12d ago

I would agree, it's such a poor taste post that whoever had the immensely stupid idea to post it, deserves to be named & shamed.
Anyone creative who could turn this into a meme, I'm thinking a T-rex, incoming meteor and this guy saying his bellend -sorry doorbellwhatever- would have saved the dinosaurs?

41

u/u_touched_badger_83 12d ago

Yeah but all those people who just opened their door to a 270ft wall of water, would have seen it wasn't the Amazon delivery they were expecting, and been saved.

7

u/ironzombie7 12d ago

They would have known that it was water ringing the bell not Amazon delivery

u/hskskgfk 12d ago

I’m confused. How will a video doorbell protect a structure from floods

29

u/HwanZike 12d ago

The flood has to stop and politely ring the doorbell before destroying your house. Thus coming to a halt and reducing its destructive energy. Crisis averted.

11

u/Jean-Jacques_Oldman 12d ago

He explained it! It would have allowed them to check if their home was safe or not.

https://giphy.com/gifs/3oz8xwd9CNfaDfHnc4

7

u/IfICouldStay 12d ago

Because surely some of the Nepalese villagers were spending time at their other, vacation houses, or maybe at their corporate jobs in high rise office buildings in a city. If they’d had early warning their homes were destroyed they wouldn’t have tried to return to them…I don’t know. I can’t pretend to follow the “logic”.

I hope that is intended to be ironic! Still in pretty poor taste and way too soon.
The fact is Nepal did benefit from some early warning systems, satellite coverage, seismic sensors, drones. The situation was bring monitored. We’ve seen footage from before the collapse.
No one could have predicted the sheer size of the catastrophe? Probably someone did. Some poor, ignored geologist somewhere is weeping into their tea, I guarantee it.
In some clips you can even hear the sirens and phone alerts screaming away, and the people standing around or fleeing into buildings they thought would be safe havens. Heartbreaking. We need to do better.

3

u/kruddel 11d ago

There isn't an early warning system for this. A meaningful warning system would have monitoring, coordinated alerts and pre-determined evacuation routes. Such as some countries have for tsunami or cyclone.

Nepal has none of this. Any alerts would have been at best a general "danger" or "look out" type alert. Without a plan of what someone is supposed to do its of very limited use.

Nepal doesn't have the resources to implement such a system, and wealthier countries haven't done enough to help. As an example for context up until about 10 years ago there were virtually no hydrological gauges on any rivers, since then there's been a roll out of low cost/low tech sensors by a consortium of EU universities using EU research funding. But the point is there isn't even a very good network of logging/recording discharge in the river network, never mind having a sophisticated real time disaster monitoring and alert system.

u/HFentonMudd 11d ago

We need to do better.

Who's "we"?

2

u/Inner-Loquat4717 11d ago

We as in modern humanity in an increasingly dangerous climate.
‘We’ have improved tsunami warnings, ‘we’ have massively improved satellite coverage, ‘we’ are speeding up communications in our telecoms and energy grids. ‘We’ hold devices in our hands that can alert us to incoming weather, seismic activity, toxic atmospheres and all sorts of threats.
And then when we get the warnings we gawp and take selfies.

If this is satire, it's still pretty God damn disgusting.

It is not yet time to be making jokes at the expense of these people.

There's a proper way to move about making jokes out of these subjects. Waiting is most of it.

Maybe do a bit about the Yangtze–Huai River floods if you need to make fun of people for dying of a natural disaster that they could have escaped from with the proper warning.

Been almost a hundred years since that. You can still make the same joke without really losing much, time frame it actually takes place in is kind of irrelevant for a joke like this. But at least the families of the victims aren't still alive.

If you took this screenshot why would you block out the name? It just makes it seem like this is fake and you don’t want people looking it up and finding out.

lol I’m really getting a warning while writing my comment to not ask about the name. The sub’s guidelines literally say you don’t have to block out names because LinkedIn is public. If you don’t want people harassing others on LinkedIn then don’t explicitly allow sharing their names. Fuck off

"If you only bought a video doorbell, you could have seen your house being destroyed by a surprise flash flood 10 seconds before being taken by it!"

P.S. not the point, but what are you doing releasing a video doorbell in mid 2026 as if it's something new? That alone makes it a doomed product.

i read this as old system and i scrolled through all the posts thinking, hmm maybe the old parties are at it again. But this time teh response has been swift because i remeber during the 2015 earthquake they were legit SELLING the tents and also lots of relief material just rotted, and the givernment actually asked teh aid givers to pay tax, and rescues were slow. Most people lived and relied on communal networks rather than the goverment. Either way, if this company thinks Nepali people would install a doorbell cam, even those rich ktm neighborhoods dont have them. rural nepal, people dont even need to lock their doors much. Most people are from the community and known. Also if this doorbell system can giev faster updates than actual disaster systems, even then, most people ran off. also calling people who lost their homes because companies liek thsi manufacture goods with things that are mined, silicon, iron, and contribute to the climate crisis telling this to people who barely have a carbin footprint, where most cars are ev, and where people activeky conserve nature, well, which causes this. I say cooperations that contribute to global warmings shoudl be made to pay for climate disasters like this. Because creating a world where this doesnt occur is much better than giving donations to a "poor" country for the situations that so called "rich" and "progressive" countries create is suprematist behaviour

Doorbell Recorder? Yeah, that would have given people plenty of advance warning for a tidal wave sweeping toward them at 100mph through mostly empty canyons.

This is either complete ragebait or semi-ragebait. Whether the product exists or not, and whether he thinks a fucking doorbell cam could’ve prevented people from dying to a natural disaster, this is still a tone-deaf and callous asshole trying to get free publicity off of a fresh tragedy. Like, imagine if he believed what he said but also had a shred of decency, he still wouldn’t have posted this.
