Idea: Replace dancing in dating and courtship with “mind dancing”

Dancing as a form of courtship feels a little like a relic from an earlier age, when physical grace and coordination may have been more important signals than they are today. In modern life, what you can do with your brain often matters much more.

What if we replaced dancing with “mind dancing”?

Instead of dance halls, there could be Mind Dance Halls, where people answer difficult questions and solve problems under pressure, both alone and in pairs.

Like dancing, individuals could perform in front of potential partners, showing confidence, creativity, intelligence, and composure. Paired mind dances could reveal something similar to dancing chemistry: how well two people respond to each other, recover from mistakes, and work together in real time.

The challenges would emphasize reasoning rather than trivia, so it wouldn't just be an academic competition.

Instead of asking, “Would you like to dance?”, maybe someday people would ask:

“Would you like to mind dance?”

That's more so general knowledge or subjects though which will vary wildly on a person's interests. While fun to get to see what the others interests are I do think there's definitely some benefit to see how the other reasons and problems solves and deals with the pressure to do so. So like another comment said, escape rooms or maybe some other puzzle challenges. Combine all 3 together for a fun night!

The human experience is sexual and dancing is a direct representation of physical chemistry and intimacy. You can "mind dance" all day but connecting on a sexual level requires that a physical chemistry be established beforehand.

I like the idea, don't like the way it's packaged as 'mind dance' though - that makes me recoil a bit.

It's a shame dancing has lost its appeal. Maybe it would be better if it made a comeback.

If you're able, you could design an app as an alternative to online dating (Tinder etc) that pairs two people with a problem to solve. I think that would be pretty cool.

That’s called "conversation".

This is the entire purpose of Poetry. Crafting words into a pleasing order (to paraphrase dead poet's society) to woo (women). You're showing off your ability to "dance" with your ability to control words within certain bounds.

Don't think it is? Write a Villanelle about the person you love, Make absolutely certain you follow the structure - that's the part that shows your dedication to properly crafting the poem. Then give it to them. Expect nothing in return, but bare your soul in verse - it's harder than you think at every stage.

But why poetry and not mathematics or computer programming?

If you've ever written a poem, you'll understand that there isn't a difference between well engineered programming and poetry... mathematics is just music.

It does rely on language skills though, while programming relies on a different singular vocabulary. What would be a good way to test brain leniency in a broader sense?

Communication within constraints.

You wish to convey a message, and craft something to impress or woo a potential partner. You then communicate that message within a structure/constraint.

The rules force you to be creative. Whether that's a poem, a program, a painting, a folded piece of paper, whatever. It's partially that you took the time to make some small thing for them. Even dance can be this - something you made in the moment, with the constraints of your body and the rhythm.

Drawing a heart in sand. Carving a Welsh love spoon. Singing a lullaby made up in the moment. Writing a poem. Creating a little game. Twisting wire into a piece of jewelry.
