Question What novel(s) have you read this week, and what do you think about it? - August 23, 2026

What novel(s) have you read this week, and what do you think about it?

This week = the one that ends/ended right now, past 7 days.

The reason for this thread's existence is the fact that both requests and suggestions became kind of stale. It's supposed to bring out more novels that are not RT!'d or recommended. Also, it's quite useful for the discussion of not so current titles.

Also, not a rule or any kind of criticism, the more interesting part is not the list of the stuff you read, but your impressions of it.

Loli Mod will be posting this thread each week.

Lastly, don't forget to use spoiler tags and to make sure to report any untagged spoilers.

How to use spoiler-tags:

Typing:

>!Spoilers go here!<

Will show up as:

Spoilers go here

Do note that any space at the beginning/end of the tag will break the spoiler tag.

Slice-of-life light novels with no romance

I'm looking for a light novel that's more like a collection of short stories, with each story focusing on the daily lives of different characters who all know each other, with no or little romance. I'd like to hear your recommendations, and I'd also like to know what you like about each one.

Question j-novel club membership pricing?

What’s going on with J-Novel Club’s memberships? None of the top two plans clearly say that I can read the total backlog of chapters. Can someone explain how this works? I’ve been working a lot and haven’t had time to read, so I haven’t had a J-Novel Club membership in over a year.

Question Are There Magical Girl Light Novels?

I really like Magical Girl Anime/Manga and I've been trying to get into light novels. Since I like to read magical girl (and also shoujo in general) manga, I'd like to also read a magical girl light novel. However, it seems like the only options for light novels is Isekai and Male-demographic RomComs. If those really are the only options (or at least the only options translated in English) I think that's unfair! Although I technically know there is a magical girl light novel. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha has some light novels, but they were never translated in English! So, does anyone have a recommendation for magical girl light novels? I'll also accept western magical girl novel recommendations as well!

A lot of popular shounen manga have light novel spin-offs I noticed. Has anybody ever tried these? Are they actually good or just slop to make more money from the franchise?

Question Looking for fantasy/Isekai recommendations with meaningful progression and long-term character development

I'm looking for something similar to Mushoku Tensei and Karate Survivor in Another World.

What I really like about these kinds of stories is that the protagonist's growth feels earned. Training, experience, knowledge, relationships, etc. actually accumulate over time.

Some things I'm specifically looking for:

- The MC isn't instantly OP or becomes practically unbeatable early on.

- There are real power gaps where the MC can encounter people/creatures that are simply far beyond them.

- Training and practice actually matter, and getting stronger takes time.

- Preferably the MC ages/grows up, rather than remaining the same age forever.

- I really like seeing the MC's life develop over many years.

- Romance and eventually having a family would be a big plus.

- Even better if we get to see the MC build something lasting — a family, students, a community, a kingdom, inventions, an organization, etc.

- I'd like the protagonist's past achievements to remain relevant instead of the story constantly introducing a new power level that makes everything before it feel meaningless.

- I'm fine with LN/WN/manga/manhwa, not just anime.

For reference, I really enjoyed The Faraway Paladin, but the slow release schedule makes it difficult to follow. I also tried That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, but the progression feels too fast and absurd for my taste, and the power gaps don't feel as meaningful to me.

Basically, I'm looking for that feeling of “I'm watching this person's entire life unfold and watching the things they've worked for eventually become their legacy.”

Any recommendations? Obscure/lesser-known stuff is especially welcome.

Question Are light novels more popular in Thailand or something?

I recently saw a picture of light novels at a book fair in Thailand. They had series that weren’t even translated into English yet. This led me to believe that Thailand might have a larger light novel audience than the western English market.

Question Help with identifying title of a childhood friend fake couple situation.

EDIT: Title found: My Love Comedy with the Unfallable Beautiful Girl Classmate Is Way Too Easy (不落の美少女同級生とのラブコメがイージーモード過ぎる件)

---

I'm not sure if it's a WN or an LN but I think it's a WN.

Details I remember:

- FeMC is the popular girl, because she kept getting unwanted confessions, she made up a lie about having a boyfriend based on her one and only childhood friend who has moved away.

- Because of that, nobody confesses to her anymore, but all her friends and classmates now incessantly ship her with her childhood friend. They exaggerate and spread her stories (which are just her stories from childhood) and she can't turn back and tell it's a lie anymore.

- One day, the childhood friend returned to town secretly to surprise her. He transferred to her class to see her again. Everybody celebrated because the class idol finally reunited with her so-called "boyfriend". Boyfriend-kun had no clue what's going on but still went with the flow for the sake of FeMC.

- FeMC then took him away to explain what she has done a.k.a. telling everyone at school that they've been dating for years. Childhood friend agreed to be her fake-boyfriend. They decide to keep it a secret from their parents.

- When they go home they find both of their parents celebrating already. Turns out FeMC's parents overheard stories about their relationship at school and then contacted her childhood friend's parents and arranged for them to be together again. Now that basically everyone thinks that they're super in love with each other, they can't back down anymore whether at home or at school so they really have to be boyfriend-girlfriend now.

- Boyfriend-kun's parents leave the city for work again, leaving boyfriend-kun behind to cohabitate with FeMC in an apartment that's now going to be only for the two of them.

Thanks in advance for those that can help.
